INTRODUCTION

AutoCAD is a 3D computer-assisted design software by Autodesk that’s created for

manufacturing planning, product designing, building designing, construction, and
civil engineering. More than making 3D models, AutoCAD is also used for drafts,
documents, and 2D drawings. The 2D drawing, annotation features, and drafting
allow users to customize texts, add dimension styles, tie in data from Microsoft
Excel tables and spreadsheets to the drawings, and use dynamic blocks. On the side
of 3D modeling and drawing, users can apply lighting and add materials to the
models to produce real-life renditions and appearances. Edges, shading, and lighting
can also be controlled for the models in AutoCAD. The app also allows users to look
into the interior of their 3D creations. AutoCAD allows them to take data from PDF
files to work with teammates as drawings and models are reviewed. Lastly, interface
customization is also possible to make model editing faster and to organize the
AutoCAD tools for easier access.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTOCAD
In the Above Section, we have learned about Introduction to AutoCAD, there are
some main characteristics that one need:
• AutoCAD is a global application. It is being used globally by product
development teams, manufacturing facilities, medical professionals, in
educational institutions, by professionals and engineers.
• 3D modeling and visualization are two main important features of the
program. AutoCAD allows the modelers to create powerful 3d models,
wireframes, meshes & surfaces by using various 3D tools & commands.
• AutoCAD is a professional application that has flexibility in design changes
and has an auto-specification check feature. The mistakes in the designs or the
production can be avoided and can be re-edit as and when required.
• AutoCAD has the capability to create section planes. These section planes
help in achieving cross-sectional views of 3D objects. The users can change,
select, or move the section planes to inspect the inner details of 3D objects.
• AutoCAD helps the user to develop, modify and design better infrastructure,
deliver scalable and feasible building assignments, supervise production
finances and foresee project results.
• Recreating and editing 2D images with their text properties can also be
achieved with AutoCAD.
• AutoCAD drawings can also be linked directly to Microsoft Excel
Spreadsheets. With this technique, formulas and data from Excel can be
imported directly to AutoCAD. This feature is an Auto-Update command.
• AutoCAD also comes with an SHF text recognition tool that helps the users
to convert text with SHF fonts into a text object.
• With AutoCAD, the students can even import PDF files for any project
reference.
• 3D models from other CAD applications can also be imported to AutoCAD.
The designers can also work on imported online maps or locations.

FEATURES OF AUTOCAD

1. Ribbon: With the ribbon interface, overall drafting productivity is increased

as the number of steps to reach a command is decreased. The ribbon interface
presents command options in a concise visual format, allowing you to quickly
select commands based on the work you're doing.Moving between
applications is now quick and intuitive. The ribbon is both customizable and
expandable so that it can be optimized for each user and meet each company's
standards.
2. ViewCube and SteeringWheels: The ViewCube is an interactive tool used
to rotate and orient any solid or surface model in AutoCAD. Selecting a face,
edge, or corner of the cube brings the model quickly to that predefined
orientation.Clicking and holding the ViewCube allows the model to be freely
roated in any direction. Since the cube is in a fixed location on the screen, it
provides at-a-glance orientation. The ViewCube will be introduced in all
Autodesk products as a common tool for working with 3D models. In addition
to allowing quick access to the orbit command, the new SteeringWheels tool
allows quick access to the pan, center, and zoom commands. The
SteeringWheels is highly customizable so you can add walk through
commands to help create and record a walk-through of your model.

3. Menu Browser: Reviewing and working with several files is no longer a

tedious and time-consuming process. The new menu browser interface allows
you to browse files and examine thumbnail images and provides detailed
information about file size and file creator. Plus, you can organize recently
used files by name, date, or title.

4. Action Recorder: The new action recorder saves time and increases
productivity by automating repetitive tasks without requiring the skill or
assistance of a professional CAD manager. Users can quickly record a task,
add text messages and requests for input, then quickly select and play back
recorded files.

5. Layer Dialog: The new layer dialog makes creating and editing layer
properties faster and less prone to error. Changes are instantly reflected in the
drawing as they are made in the dialog. The manipulation of the dialog box
has been simplified, and columns in the dialog can be individually resized so
the contents of that column or its title are not truncated. Individual columns
can be fixed in place so that the rest of the columns can be scrolled through
and referenced to a fixed column such as the layer name.

6. Quick Properties: The easily customizable quick properties menu increases

productivity by reducing the steps to access properties information, ensuring
that information presented is optimized for that particular user and project.

7. Quick View: The quick view feature uses thumbnails instead of file names,
making opening the correct drawing file and layout faster and decreasing the
time spent opening incorrect drawing files. In the end, just as a note, as DXF
is the interchange file format of DWG, it has become de facto standard for
CAD data interoperability, so if you have any need, you can use PDF to DXF
Converter, the software which allows you to convert PDF files to editable
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) as well as SVG, CGM, HPGL files in
batch. AutoCAD is not required, also convert PDF to DWG!

8. Storage and availability: the files you have made in the AutoCAD training
can be saved on the local computer. The softcopy utilized in the training takes
very less time for storage as compared to manually drafted paper drawings.
These AutoCAD files can be stored in any cloud storage so that they can be
accessible at any time from anywhere.

9. Creating 3D Drawings: Even though manually, you can draw 3D sketch

drawings, they are not as effective as well as realistic as computer-aided
drawings (CAD). This AutoCAD software generates 3D objects along with
colors, materials and also textures, which can be applied to different surfaces
and making them bright and easier for the user.

APPLICATIONS OF AUTOCAD

After learning the Introduction to AutoCAD, it’s components and Characteristics of

AutoCAD now we are going to learn the application of AutoCAD. Digital literacy
is not just a boon to students but a skill essential for career growth. AutoCAD is a
gigantic program that delivers desired outputs and is used in many ways. The
students can use AutoCAD for:
• AutoCAD is compatible with other applications like 3D Max. The designers
can even import or export DWG & DXG Files to the application. Also, these
files can even be exported from AutoCAD to other applications for creating
more improved projects & presentations.
• 3D printers use various file formats that are not supported by all the CAD
software. AutoCAD, on the other hand, supports these file formats that are
preferred by most of the 3D printers.
• AutoCAD is adaptive of the CAD interface and with its usage. AutoCAD
allows the professionals to check the workings of the framework within the
stage of designing itself. This framework can be used by designers for projects
& presentations.
• AutoCAD comprises of integrated design layouts of various templates
specially designed for architectural planning and infrastructure constructions,
the users can work on plans that include creating of architectural arrangements
for construction purposes without having to master the software.
