Applied Heat Transfer

Exam #3C NAME ___________________________________________

Please, submit your work as a scanned version, or doc file, or pdf file with your answers for the
questions. Just scanned versions will not be graded.

Please, include all your calculations, tables or graphs data indicating what exactly tables or graphs
were used.

The deadline is Wednesday, April 22 at 00:00 am.

You free to ask questions if you do not understand the question. You may use any sources you like
and you can work in groups.

1. (20 pts) Engine oil flows through a 35-mm-diameter tube at a rate of 1.05 kg/s. Length of the
pipe is 19 meters, relative roughness is e/D=0.0012. The oil enters the tube at a temperature of
32°C, while the tube surface temperature is maintained at 100°C along the whole length.

Determine:

(a) (5pts) The oil outlet temperature [C]

(b) (3pts) Heat transfer coefficient [W/m2K]

Applied Heat Transfer

(c) (3pts) Pressure drop [Pa]

(d) (3pts) What is the distance at which the fully developed flow starts xfd,h=?

(e) (3pts) What is mean stream velocity [m/s];

(f) (3pts) What is heat transfer [W]?

Applied Heat Transfer

2. (20 pts) A thin walled pipe with inner diameter of Di =28 mm is heated electrically to provide a
uniform heat generation rate of 600 W/m2. The outer surface of the pipe is insulated, so all
generated heat is running into water. Water flows through the pipe at a rate of 0.21 kg/s. If the
water inlet temperature is Tm,i = 34°C and the desired outlet temperature is Tm,o = 62°C,
answer to the following questions:
(a) (10 pts) What is the required pipe length?

(b) (10 pts) What is the surface temperature at the exit of the pipe?
Applied Heat Transfer

3. (30 pts) A counterflow, concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil for a
large industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube (Di =
31 mm) is 0.24 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil through the outer annulus (Do = 55 mm) is 0.125
kg/s. The oil and water enter at temperatures of 145 °C and 45°C, respectively. Oil exit
temperature is to be 79°C.

Determine:

(a) (5pts) Draw the graph Temperature-Length of the pipe showing inlet and outlet temperatures of
both fluids.

(b) (7 pts) How long must the tube be made if the outlet temperature if no fouling will take place?
Applied Heat Transfer

(c) (8 pts) Compute the pressure drop in the inner tubing [Pa]

(d) (10 pts) How long must the tube be made if the inner and outer tubing fouling are Rf”(inner) =
0.0029 [m2*K/W] and Rf”(outer) = 0.0011 [m2*K/W].
Applied Heat Transfer

4. (30 pts) A parallel flow, concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil for a
large industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube (Di =
30 mm) is 0.52 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil through the outer annulus (Do = 58 mm) is 0.11
kg/s. The oil and water enters at temperatures of 125°C and 35°C, respectively. Oil exit
temperature is to be 50°C.

(a) (5pts) Draw the graph Temperature-Length of the pipe showing inlet and outlet
temperatures of both fluids.

(b) (7 pts) How long must the tube be made if the outlet temperature if no fouling will take
place?
Applied Heat Transfer

(c) (8 pts) Compute the pressure drop in the outer annulus [Pa]. Use hydraulic diameter (Di-Do)
instead of D in the formula.

(d) (10 pts) How long must the tube be made if the inner and outer tubing fouling are Rf”(inner)
= 0.0029 [m2*K/W] and Rf”(outer) = 0.0031 [m2*K/W].
Applied Heat Transfer

5. (10pts) A counterflow, concentric tube heat exchanger is designed to heat water from 25 °C to
83°C using hot oil, which is supplied to the annulus at 155°C and discharged at 105°C. The thin-
walled inner tube has a diameter of Di = 28 mm, and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 520
W/m2 K. The length of the heat exchanger is 27.4 m.
Compute the total heat transfer rate? [W]
