OUTLINE

• Back-to-Basics Presentation
• Review of the Tensile Properties of the Reinforcement (discussion of MARV)
• General comments and recommendations involving their use in design

Defining Long-Term Design Strength (LTDS)

TULT
LTDS or Tal =
RFCR ´ RFID ´ RFD

Defining Long-Term Design Strength

TULT
LTDS or Tal =
RFCR ´ RFID ´ RFD

TULT = tensile strength of the geosynthetic based on MARV

RFCR = reduction factor for creep
RFID = reduction factor for installation damage
RFD = reduction factor for durability (aging )

Define Tult
LOT
• Definable quantity/size/area of
manufactured product
• 20,000 sq yd
• Raw goods
• 12-month rolling calculation

SAMPLE
• Representative samples are
taken from product rolls at
regular frequency

SPECIMEN
• Specimens are cut from the roll
sample and prepared for testing.

6 | Las Vegas 2014

Define Tult

SPECIMEN
• Specimens are subjected to wide
width (or single rib) tensile testing
according to ASTM D6637
• The average roll value is determined

Define Tult

For every roll tested, there is an average roll value

Tave 1

Tave 2
MARV (Minimum Average Roll Value)
Tave
. 3
• Literal definition: the minimum value of Tave for a given lot
. • Statistical definition: the mean of Tave – 2 x standard deviation
.
Tave n
MARV = Tmean - 2 ´ std dev
Tmean Note: For an infinite population, the literal MARV and the statistical MARV converge

12 | Las Vegas 2014

Define Tult

• MARV is intended to reflect 95% confidence in the measured values.

• Since we are not concerned with the upper values, we are confident to
97.5% that we deliver material to your site that will meet MARV
• In other words, we are allowed to get it wrong 2.5 out of 100

Define Tult

MARV (Minimum Average Roll Value)

• Getting it wrong 2.5 out of 100 times is unacceptable from a Designer’s point of view
• Manufacturer’s talk in terms of absolute minimum values

Summary

ACTUAL MARV (Minimum Average Roll Value)

• Defined statistically, based on a large population of data
• True reflection on the capabilities of the manufacturer

PUBLISHED MARV (Minimum Average Roll Value)

• Published MARV values are different
• Reflect the manufacturer’s confidence in their product
• Consistency
• Quality

PROJECT MARV (Minimum Average Roll Value)

• Allows for slight modifications to published MARV (for specific projects)
• Backed up with testing
