CREATING A PROFILE FROM POINTS WITHOUT A SURFACE

This help sheet covers two methods of creating a profile from survey points WITHOUT creating a surface.
For instructions on starting a new drawing, refer to Wisconsin NRCS Help Sheet “Starting a new Drawing.”

The following steps will need to be performed after you have created points in your drawing. For instructions on creating
survey points in Civil 3D, refer to Wisconsin Help Sheet “Creating Points”

OPTION 1: Creating the Profile Without NRCS Tools


Step 1: Add the Transparent Commands toolbar to your workspace. To do this:

• Type –TOOLBAR at the command line


• Type TRANSPARENT_COMMANDS at the command line
• Tap Enter
• Tap Enter to <Show> the Transparent Commands toolbar
The Transparent Commands toolbar pops into your workspace. You can either dock it or simply drag it out of the way.

Step 2: Create a Quick Profile from your survey data. To do this:

• Type 3DPOLY at the command line to start the 3D polyline command


• Tap Enter

• On the Transparent Commands Toolbar click the Point Object icon


• Click on the point that you wish to start the 3D polyline
• Continue clicking on points until you reach the end of the desired profile
• When you have selected the last point tap Enter (or Esc)  Tap Enter (or Esc) again to end the command
• The 3D polyline will pop in

• Click on the 3D polyline


• Right Click
• Select Quick Profile

• The Create Quick Profile dialog box pops in


• Select a Profile View Style
• Make sure the Draw 3D Entity Profile box is checked
• Select a 3D entity profile style
• Click OK

• Select a profile view origin by clicking in Model Space


• The Quick Profile is created
*Note: If you were to save and close the drawing at this point the Quick Profile would disappear. Quick Profiles are not
able to be saved with the drawing file.

• Click the Output Tab on the ribbon


• Click Export to LandXML

• The Export to LandXML dialog box pops in


• Click the Pick from drawing button

• Draw a selection window around the Quick Profile you created


• Tap Enter
• Click OK
• The Export LandXML Save option pops in  Browse to a location to save the Quick Profile  Name
the Quick Profile  Click Save
• Click the Insert Tab on the ribbon
• On the Import Panel click LandXML

• The Import LandXML dialog pops up


• Map to the location of the exported LandXML file from the previous steps
• Select the file
• Click Open

• Click OK in the box that pops up

The 3D polyline is now an alignment with station marks. You can now create a surface profile from the
alignment.
Step 3: Create a surface profile from the alignment. To do this:

• From the Home Tab  The Create Design Panel  Click Profile

• Click Create Surface Profile

• The create Profile from Surface dialog box pops up


• Select the alignment you just created
• Click the Draw in profile view button

• The create Profile View – General box pops up


• Double check the alignment selection
• The profile will be named after the alignment you choose or <[Parent Alignment]>
• Select a Profile View Style
*Note: At this point, if you do not need to change anything else in the profile display you can click Create Profile
View. If you wish to change some settings in the profile, click Next. We will click Create Profile View.

• Click a location in model space for the Profile View Origin


• The surface profile is created

The profile and alignment will not have the “dynamic” feature they do when we create a profile from an actual
surface. Meaning, if you change the alignment, the profile will not automatically update. The relationship
between the alignment and the profile is lost in the exporting and importing process.

Option 2: Creating the Profile With NRCS Tools

*Note: The NRCS custom User Interface (CUI) must be installed and loaded on the user’s computer prior to
attempting the following steps. The NRCS CUI file is included with NRCS installations on NRCS computers.
Non-NRCS users should utilize Option 1 for creating a profile without a surface.
To Create the Profile Using NRCS Tools:
• From the NRCS Tab  NRCS C3D panel  Click Points to Profile

• The Points to Profile box pops up


• Click the button in front of Select Multiple Points (Alternatively you can select a point group, or select
points one at a time)
• Name the alignment in the Alignment Name field in the upper right corner of the points to Profile Box
• Make sure the Create Profile box is checked
• Click Pick
• Select the points to define the alignment  Tap Enter after selecting your points  Click Create

• The NRCS Civil 3D Add In box pops up saying an alignment has been created  Click OK

• Click on the alignment you just created


• On the Ribbon  Launch Pad Panel  Click Profile View

• The Create Profile View – General dialog box pops up


• Select the alignment you just created
• The profile will be named after the alignment you choose or <[Parent Alignment]>
• Choose a Profile View Style
*Note: At this point, if you do not need to change anything else in the profile display you can click Create Profile
View. If you wish to change some settings in the profile, click Next. We will click Create Profile View.

• Click a location in model space for the Profile View Origin


• The surface profile is created
*Note: Profiles created from points with the NRCS Points to Profile tool CAN be saved to your drawing
without performing the additional export/import steps of a Quick Profile detailed in Option 1 of this help

*Note: The profile you've created is NOT dynamically updated. If you make changes to the alignment or to the
survey points you will need to use the Points to Profile tool again to create the new profile.
• At this point you can save your drawing and continue with your project.
