Quaken & Shaken

The first tremor hit exactly at 11:56 am and lasted for approx one minute.
The 7.9 shock wave is believed to have claimed hundreds of lives across
Nepal already and the death toll has been increasing rapidly……..”
Friends I was always curious and often used to ask my father about the
feeling of earthquake(as he had already experienced in 1988). But this
thirst of curiosity doesn’t last long and eventually it ended on 25th
April,2015. I along with my two friends was preparing for our upcoming
board exams in our room. Suddenly it seemed as if the floor had dropped
away from where it had been a second ago and everything around us
started shaking and trembling. It was very difficult to stand still because
one second you would be standing there and after next the floor beneath
the feet was no longer. We were on the 3rd floor and understood what
the fear was. We completely lost our hope to survive. But by
the GRACE of almighty god, we survived and rushed fastly towards the
open field. We were full of fears. The 7.9 shaking stops for a fraction of
second, but before I can even take a step, the tremor returns with the
new strength, and I must grab my friends arm for support. Within a
second, the 3-storeyed building collapsed near our eyes and all started
crying. We finally emerge in the open road and have been informed that
nine storied iconic tower “Dharahara” had collapsed and it is believed
that at least 150 people were inside and beside there. “We were living
under a bomb” I remember a geologist saying on a talk show once, “It
is only a matter of time before it explodes, destroying  all that comes in
its way, like it has done so many times in the past.” Loss and damages
have been reported across Nepal. Hundreds of temples and monuments
have been converted into dust and stone. ‘THE LOSS- Wait, was that a
SHOCK?” Another big aftershock jolts the land beneath us. I focus on
the radio announcer,’‘95% of villages in Sindhupalchowk district have
been flattened and it is estimated that thousands have died.
AVALANCHES have been reported on several mountains, including
Everest and have blocked access to most villages. Various national
heritages sites have been damaged.” His Voice seems to grow merrier as
he speaks, almost as though he’s been waiting for a moment like this but
I continue listening. I am very thankful to almighty who helped us. We
had no courage to spend night in the 6-storeyed building where we had
been living(as aftershocks had not stopped yet).So We finally decided to
spend our night in the road. Our good luck was that road has been
stopped for the repair. So it was the first time I have ever slept on the
road. Dozens of aftershocks were felt at night. We were completely new
to this situation “Our Best neighbour INDIA openheartedly helped and
provided support in relief works. International Support and Aid was
arriving from around the world, and the Public themselves were expected
to Participate.” It was the first time I had ever experienced this crucial
situation. From my childhood I was a big fan of Bear Grylls of MAN VS
WILD and was also inspired by him. So I felt like Bear Grylls in that
Situation finding the way to survive. After a month the bigger aftershocks
stopped and we again tried our best to rejuvenate our daily routine.
Friends, “WE WERE QUAKEN & SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED!”.

(P.S. I want to extend my thanks to my brother Ujjwal Khanal for his

support and proof reading)
