SECTION 2900 : MISCELLANEOUS

2901 ANTI-TERMITE TREATMENT

2901.1 GENERAL

Ant-termite treatment shall be done at the earliest relevant time of

construction.

Prevention of termite from reaching super-structure of a building

shall be achieved by treating soil beneath the building and around
the foundation with a suitable insecticide and creating a chemical
barrier between the ground the other components of the building.

2901.2 MATERIALS

2901.2.1 Chemicals

Any one of the following chemicals, use of which is permitted under

rules in water emulsion to achieve the percentage concentration
specified against each chemical shall be used for anti-termite
treatment.

TABLE 2900.1

CHEMICALS AND THEIR CONCENTRATION FOR

ANTI-TERMITE TREATMENT

S.No. Chemical Relevant Indian Concentration

1. Aldrin emulsifiable IS:1307 0.5%
concentration

2. Heptachlor emulsifiable IS:6439 0.5%

concentration

3. Chlordane emulsifiable IS:2682 1.0%

To achieve the specified percentage of concentration, the

respective chemical should be diluted with water in required
quantity using graduated containers.

________________________________________________________________________________________________
Part B - .Buildings – Miscellaneous Page 1 of 10
Specifications RVNL
The chemical to be used shall be procured in sealed original
containers directly from reputed and approved manufacturer.
Empty containers, after washing at the end of the day’s work shall
be destroyed as per procedure specified by manufacturer or as
directed by engineer.

2901.3 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The containers having emulsi-fiable chemical concentrates shall be

clearly labelled and kept securely closed in stores so that children
or pets cannot get access to them. Storage and mixing of
concentrates shall not be done near any fire source of flame.
Persons using these chemicals shall be warned that absorption
through skin is the most likely source of accidental poisoning.
Particular care shall be taken to prevent skin contact with
concentrates and prolong exposure to dilute emulsion shall also be
avoided. After handling the concentrates or diluted emulsion,
workers shall wash themselves with soap and water and wear
clean clothing especially before eating and smoking.

Care should be taken in the application of chemicals to see that

they are not allowed to contaminate source of drinking water.

2901.4 APPLICATION

2901.4.1 Anti-termite treatment of soils shall be done as per IS:6313 (Part 2).
Treatment shall be got done only from approved specialised
agencies in this field. Concentrated chemicals in sealed containers
shall be measured in litres. Chemicals of different types after their
concentration shall be measured separately. Spraying of the
chemical shall be done using pressure pumps to facilitate proper
penetration of chemical into the ground. Proper check should be
exercised to ensure that the specified quantity of chemicals is used
for the required area during the operation.

2904.4.2 Time of Application

Soil treatment should be done before laying the concrete / levelling

course in foundations, trenches of pits. Laying of bed concrete /
levelling course should start when the chemical emulsion has been
absorbed in the soil and the surface is quite dry. Treatment should
not be carried out when it is raining or when soil is wet. Treatment
to the surface of earth fill within the plinth shall also be done in the
same manner before laying sub-grade for flooring.
2901.4.3 Disturbance

________________________________________________________________________________________________
Part B - .Buildings – Miscellaneous Page 2 of 10
Specifications RVNL
Treated soil barrier shall not be disturbed. If, due to some reasons,
the treated soil barriers are disturbed, immediate steps shall be
taken to ensure continuity completeness of the barrier system.

2901.4.4 Treatment for Masonry Foundations and Basements

a) The bottom surface and the sides (upto a height of 300 mm)
of excavations made for masonry foundations and
basements shall be treated with the chemical at the rate of 5
litres per square meter of surface area.

b) The backfill in immediate contact with foundation structure

shall be treated at the rate of 7.5 litres per sqm of vertical
surface of the sub structure for each side. If water is used
for ramming the earth fill, chemical treatment shall be carried
out after the ramming operation is done by rodding the earth
at 150 mm centres close to the wall surface and treating with
chemical to the above dosage. The earth is usually returned
in layers and the treatment shall be carried out in similar
stages. The chemical emulsion shall be directed towards
the concrete or masonry surfaces of the columns and walls
to that earth in contact with these surfaces is well treated
with the chemical.

2901.4.5 Treatment for Reinforced Cement Concrete Foundations and

Basements

In the case of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) foundations,

treatment shall start at a depth of 500 mm below the existing or
new ground level created by cutting or filling after the foundation
has been cast. The soil in immediate contact with vertical surfaces
of RCC foundations shall be treated at the rate of 7.5 litres per
square metre. Other details of treatment shall be as stated above.

2901.4.6 Treatment of Top Surface of Plinth Filling

The top surface of filled earth within the plinth walls shall be treated
with chemical emulsion at the rate of 5 litres per sqm of surface
before sand / sub grade is laid. Holes upto 50 to 75 mm deep at
150 mm centres both ways shall be made with crow bars on the
surface to facilitate saturation of soil with chemical emulsion.

2901.4.7 Treatment at Junction of Walls and Floors

To achieve continuity of the vertical chemical barrier on inner wall

surfaces from the ground level a small channel 30 x 30 mm shall be

made at all the junctions of walls and columns with the floor (before
laying the sub-grade) and rod holes made in the channel upto
ground level 150 mm apart and the chemical emulsion poured
along the channel @ 7.5 litres per sqm of the vertical wall or
column surface so as to soak soil right upto bottom. The soil shall
be tamped back into place after this operation.

2901.4.8 Treatment of Soil along External Perimeter of Building

After the building is complete, 300 mm deep holes shall be

provided in the soil with iron rods along the external perimeter of
the building at intervals of about 150 mm and these holes shall be
filled with chemical emulsion at the rate of 7.5 litres per sqm of
vertical surfaces. If the depth of filling is more than 300 mm,
external perimeter treatment shall extend to the full depth of filling
upto the ground level so as to ensure continuity of the chemical
barrier. In case earth outside the building is graded on completion
of building, this treatment shall be carried out on completion of such
grading.

2901.4.9 Treatment of soil under Apron (Plinth Protection) along

External Perimeter of Building

Top surface of the consolidated earth over which the apron is to be

laid shall be treated with chemical emulsion at the rate of 5 litres
per square meter and surface before the apron is laid. If
consolidated earth does not allow emulsion to seep through, holes
upto 50 to 75 mm deep at 150 mm centres, both ways, can be
made with 12 mm diameter mild steel rod on the surface to
facilitate saturation of soil with the chemical emulsion.

2901.4.10 Treatment for Expansion Joints

Anti-termite treatment shall be supplemented and treating with

chemical emulsion through e expansion joint after the sub-grade
has been laid @ 2 litres per linear metre of expansion joint.

2901.4.11 Treatment of Walls Retaining Soil above Floor Level

Soil retained by retaining walls, like basement wall or outer walls

above floor level, shall be treated at the rate of 7.5 litres per square
metre of vertical surface so as to effect a continuous outer chemical
barrier, in continuation of the one formed under Sub Clause
2901.4.4.
