The Hunting ExCro Wire Tester serves two very important functions.
The first is to ‘set’ braided line rope sockets quickly and safely, without
having to do so by pulling on the cable from the winch, through the rig
up, reducing the risk of exposing personnel to cables under high tension.
The second is to give slicklines a straight pull test which is important for
gauging the true strength of any slickline. The traditional torsion tester can
give an excellent indication of the wire condition whether carbon, alloy or
stainless steel, but not an actual value.

The Hunting ExCro tester is a very safe and convenient tool. Whether testing
the integrity of a rope socket, or pull testing a slickline the principle is the same.
The wire is made up to a rope socket and loaded into the tester. The wire is then
clamped in place, using the appropriate clamp jaws (jaws for .108, .125, .160.
3/16, 7/32 and 5/16 are supplied).

Once set up, testing is a very straightforward procedure: The piston is activated
using a hydraulic hand pump to apply the appropriate load to the wire and the
load is monitored through the pressure gauge on the pump. One PSI of hydraulic
pressure applied to the piston equals one pound of linear tension on the wire.

The Hunting ExCro tester is a very safe and convenient


tool. Whether testing the integrity of a rope socket, or pull
testing a slickline the principle is the same.

While the test is under way, the short section of wire which is under tension is
held within the body of the tool, making it completely safe. The base unit weighs
only 25Kg so it is fully portable and ready to use anywhere. It does not require
any special tools. Virtually any rope socket can be used, straight out of
the toolbox.

The ExCro can be supplied a simple unit, or as a complete ExCro Testing


Package, mounted on a frame and complete with a hand pump and chart
recorder, so that pull tests can be recorded for inspection.
