Watching the Watchmen

Here's o sampling of what other creators say about Watchmen 10 years later:
Neil Gaiman: "I was astonished by its sheer technical bravura as well as Alan Moore and Dave
Gibbons' willingness not to make a big deal out of how impressive it was. If Watchmen has a problem, it's
that they didn't realize how big it was going to be. Their rigid and brilliant structure didn't give them
enough room to change, and the story outgrew its structure. They started off telling the ultimate superhero
story, hut it got bigger than that. As a result, it's ultimately less satisfying than it could have been."
Alex Ross: 'It showed that something
really epic and pure could be created in a multi¬
character, multi-part storyline. But its
importance is not so much in its scale but in its
execution and the intelligence with how it was
created. It inspired a lot of my thinking today
on superheroes, in fact, I went to some
Halloween parties dressed as Rorschach."
Mark Waid: "Watchmen was a
masterpiece of plot structure. Everything meant
something, and everything advanced the story.
It's lean and cuts right to the bane, which should
be the ultimate goal of any story."
Kurt Busiek: "It raised the level of
discourse because it was so well-made. It was
thought through on a level that comics hadn't
reached before. And we can't hold Alan and
Dave responsible for their cheesy imitators.
They did something new, interesting and clever,
and writers who were inspired by that should
have done something else that was new,
interesting and clever."
Ron Marz: "Combined with Pack Knight, it reignited my interest in comics, because it showed
the possibilities inherent in the medium. There are a lot of children of Watchmen out there."
Chuck Dixon: "It was part of an era in which comics were raised to a new level of
maturity, and I don't mean just nudity and graphic violence. There was a lot of subtext and deft
characterization. We need another Watchmen, something to cut through the clutter." ■ CS

^ove Sim and I have covered a lot of ground in Cerebus; from coves to courtyards, battlefields to bonks, cathedrals to slu .

f D! I * Jupiter and beyond. All of these are fun to draw. And while I can show you how I handle the monthly backgrounds for Cerebus, everyone's
style is a bit different. Hopefully I can steer you in the right direction and give you a good storting ground. But you should definitely take
advantage of your local library. Whenever I'm stuck for a period or style, whether it's castles, English taverns or whatever, I just look up what I
need and fomiliorire myself with the different architectural whatnots. The emphosis in Cerebus, however, is on the characters' interactions, and
people tend to stoy put while interacting. Lately, in the story arc "Guys,” the action takes place in o bar, for the most part. A bor where the alcohol
is free and there's no “lost call." Cerebus isn't going anywhere for a while.

Planning Ahead
For me, the keys to drawing one
location for an extended period ore
floor plans and keeping the layout
foirly simple. In "Joka's Story"
(Cerebus #114-#136), I had oil

! manners of plans for Joka's

apartment, Pud's tavern and Oscar's
house. I always draw floor plans for
places that we're going to be hanging
around for o while. For some rooms I
even draw up more detailed sketches
to add some texture and see how the

I rooms would look with real furniture in

it. Just remember: The important thing
is not to clutter things up.

IrTGTC #62
Establishing the Story
Now, the way Dove and I work on the book is by no means standard in comics. When I get a poge,
Dave has already laid it out, and has penciled and inked all the characters, word balloons and sound
effects. My job then is to put these characters in context. Lighting plays a huge part in this. What
| direction has Dave used for a light source? How intense is that source? How will the light affect the
mood and intention of the panel? And haw long until lunchtime?
In every other issue or so, there is usually something of an establishing shot. Ibis gives a context
for the smaller panels and the therefore necessarily smaller amount of visual information expressed
in that panel. This establishing shot sets up the feel of when and where we are. The backgrounds in
the subsequent panels need only retain that feel, suggesting the same level of lighting and texture.

I Making a Point
This is a panel as Dave has left it. The jug of soda, rice cakes and edge
of the bar are in pencil. For me, the first thing is to determine where
the characters are and where the viewer is. So you need to find the van¬
ishing point—the point of convergence way dawn the line. (It helps to
think of it like looking down a set of railroad tracks. Where it looks like
they converge all the way off in the distance is the vanishing point.) To
position it, I need to know where "eye level," or the horizon line, is. In
this case, it's established by the edge of the bar and the relative sizes
of the characters. Since Cerebus is roughly three feet tall, his eye level
is usually pretty low. (Yeah, he tends to see under a lot of tables.) I fig¬
ure Martin, the hunchbacked fellow, is about the same height, sitting
there, as Cerebus is. I draw a line with a non-reproducible blue pencil
from the top of the hunchback extending past Cerebus' head, and
another along the existing edge of the bar. I find the lines converge near
enough to Cerebus' eye level. This places the vanishing point just above
his pitcher of soda (which appears in later versions of the panel). Now
I can figure out just where I am in relation to the characters.

I Say Cheese
On a floor plan, I've indicated that Cerebus is on the second-te-last
bor stool, facing the bor, and Martin is two stools over, sitting paral¬
lel to it. The panel borders can help determine how wide the view is,
and by using the vanishing point, you can figure out exactly where the
"camera" (or more specifically, you) is positioned and the field of
view plotted. You now know just where you're sitting in the room and
can determine what you'll see behind our two friends.

1996
Pack to Pfack
At this stage I determine where to spot the blacks. Large areas ol
solid black play an important role in drawing Cerebus. They add
weight and emphasis to the page, as well as contrast. And contrast is
key. The idea is to accentuate the characters and word balloons,
while trying to add a richness of mood and setting. Cerebus will have
a 30-percent gray tone applied to him, so he needs either solid black
or solid white around him to contrast effectively. The hunchbacked
fellow is wearing black, so he needs something behind him to avoid
disappearing. I've placed the room divider screen in the
background—as indicated on the floor plan—so os to span the
width of Martin, allowing me to black in the back part of the room
behind Cerebus, with just the back of a chair visible to bring out his
black vest. I rough all of this in with a non-reproducible blue pencil. I
usually complete these steps for all of the panels on the page and
the facing page before proceeding with lunch.

Cleaning Op
I can now move on to tightening up the rough "blue squiggly line'
stage. I do the tighter rendering with a 3H graphite pencil, a metal
ruler (with a cork back for inking), sometimes an assortment of
circle and ellipse templates, sometimes (yeah, right) an eraser, and
always with previous issues at hand for reference. At this point, I
figure out incidental shadows and try to put in a few details without
cluttering things up. If it detracts from the main images, ditch it.
Occasionally I run into sound effects and have to decide (or consult
Dave on) whether to fade the backgrounds oround them, outline the
sound effects or have them reversed to white by the printer so that
they're not lost in a black background.

I Jam to Piack
I like to have the blacks filled in next. It gives substance to the
backgrounds, giving me a better feel for the compositions (which I
can still fix at this point if I'm unhappy with them), and helping me
determine how much or little cross-hatching or tone I'll need to
achieve the various shades I have in mind. This is usually the only
lime I use a technical pen, to outline the black areas. I then fill them
in with brushes, going for a good even coating of jet black ink. The
darker and more even the black, the less the person shooting the
negatives has to guess at an exposure.

PRICE GUIDE
Mint. And many things can factor into grading a comic's
value: its age, the supply and demand for the various
grades, retailer location, local availability of a title, its
current popularity, and most importantly, what specific
condition the comic is in. "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a
comic grader!" Hey, relax. We'll not only show you how to
use this price guide, but how to grade your comics too. Just
read along and before you know it, you'll be able to
dazzle your dates with all sorts of hip comic lingo.
It might help if you grade comics on a 10-point scale,
with 10 being perfect and 1 being lousy.
_ jlmost perfect 9.8 to 10 on a 10-
point scale! jUn libro muyguopo! To be Mint, a comic must
appear absolutely like the day it was printed, with no
nicks, dings or creases. It's gotta be clean as a whistle.
Comers are perfectly sharp without a tear or shred, the
colors are crystal clear, the cover gloss is still there and
even the friggin' staples are perfect. Many comics
produced today fall short of Mint standards. Remember, no
imperfections may be allowed in a Mint comic. Mint comics
usually sell for 125 to 150 percent of price guide listings.
Comics published after 1970 in Mint condition are closer to
the Near Mint price, since many exist in Mint condition.
NEAR MINT (NM): A 9 on a 10-point
scale. Just a notch or two below perfect. It might appear to
be Mint, but upon close inspection, tiny flaws can be
detected (see next page for a look at some flows). The
gloss and color are outstanding. Comics in this condition
should do any collection proud, unless you're some weird,
anal comic perfectionist. All prices in this guide are for
Near Mint copies, and are 100 percent of price guide

. i a scale of 10.
This is dean and sharp in every way and at first glance
may appear Near Mint. At closer range, however, you'll
notice minor signs of use (see next page). VF comics are
70 percent of guide listings.
FINE-VERY FINE (FVF): A 6 outta
10. Fine-Very Rne books are above-average, dean, bright
copies lacking the crispness associated with VF. Pages may
be slightly yellow, but not brown or brittle. Several tiny
stress lines along the spine or covers may be expected, and
several tiny color flakes are permitted. No subscription
creases or spine rolls are allowed in this grade. Corners
may be slightly rounded, but exceptional cover gloss
remains. Fine-Very Fine books go for 50 percent of price

FINE (FN): This rates a 5 out of 10. Rne books

are slightly better than average with obvious signs of wear
(check out the next page), but are still clean and bright
without major creasing. Fine books go for 40 percent of
price guide listings.
VERY GOOD (VGy. A whopping 3 out of
10. Average, at best. Very Good comics appear used, but
not abused. They have creases and minor tears. Very Good
books go for 15-25 percent of guide listings.
GOOD (G), FAIR (FR) and
POOR (P* All ore 1 or less out of 10. These
books...suck. They are considered below overage and
heavily worn. These are the comics that have been read
and re-read without regard to preservation. Good books
go for 10 percent of price guide listings. Fair books can
have loose pages or pieces missing from the aw and1 sell
for 3 percent of price guide listings. Poor books c
missing covers, pages, etc. These books are really sorry,
and they go for 1 percent of price guide listings.
