This firmware update improves the Morphagene by: 1. Adding new options to customize the Morph Chord Ratios between genes. 2. Replacing the auto-level procedure with a 4-step gain selection accessed by holding Record and pressing Shift. 3. Reverting the playback gain to its previous level to improve tape-like artifacts and the ability to record into new splices. 4. If your Morphagene has a serial number #6519 or higher, you

do NOT need this update.


Check the Reel and Splice Activity Windows for correct colors on
power up. These colors indicate correct firmware version: mg203
Reel = Light Pink/White, Splice = Green

This firmware can be loaded onto your Morphagene using the


attached mg203.wav file. Here is the procedure:

1. On a computer or smartphone, open the audio file.

2. Make sure that other sounds (email/IM alerts, notifications,


music, video, etc.) are turned OFF and silenced during playback of
the audio file. Turn off your wifi and bluetooth on a
computer and on a phone just use “airplane mode.”

3. Remove the SD Card from the Morphagene.

4. Patch the output of the playback device to the Left Signal IN on


the Morphagene. Turn the volume to 70% on the playback device.
Monitor the L OUT of the Morphagene if possible. 

5. Power on the system while holding down the REC Button on the
Morphagene.

6. After power up the SPLICE Activity Window will be Green while


all others will be OFF. You must now let go of the REC Button. 

7. Initiate playback of the audio file.

8. The Morphagene Activity Windows will flash in a pattern to


indicate it is successfully receiving the data. If you are monitoring
it, the L output will play a steadily rising tone. 

9. Once the process is finished, the Morphagene will flash all


lights and the steadily rising tone will stop.

10. Turn system off. Now turn on the system while holding the
Morphagene SPLICE button. It will boot up with only the SPLICE
Window lit Green. Let go of the SPLICE Button.

11. Turn the Vari-Speed control through its full range, making
sure you hit full Counter-clockwise and full Clockwise. The order
does not matter. Once you have done this, press SPLICE again
and then turn the system off and then on one last time.

12. Check the Reel and Splice Activity Windows for correct colors
on power up. These colors indicate correct firmware version:
mg203 Reel = Light Pink, Splice = Green

The Morphagene is now ready for use. You may return the SD
Card to your Morphagene.

If you have any trouble with this process, turn the volume on your
playback device up to 100% and try it again. If you still have
trouble, please contact technical@makenoisemusic.com

Change Log

1. New options added. They are on the “options.txt” file which is


found on the root directory of any microSD card that has been
mounted in a Morphagene. See the MG155 changelog on page 34
of the manual for more information on this file.

The new options mcr1, mcr2, and mcr3 allow user-definable


Morph Chord Ratios (detuning of 2nd through 4th Genes with
Morph at its highest settings). Historical settings have been
2.00000 (+1 octave), 3.00000 (+1 octave & 5th), and 4.0000 (+2
octaves). Now you can set any ratio from 0.06250 (-4 octaves) to
16.00000 (+4 octaves). Ratios are accurate to five decimals. You
can also make one or more individual Genes play in reverse with
this setting by using negative numbers. A value of 1.00000 results
in unison (no detuning). A list of 12-TET ratios is provided as
comments in the text file for easy copy/paste.

2. The Auto-level procedure has been replaced with an improved


input gain staging, accessed with a 4-step gain selection (blue-
green-orange- purple). To use, Hold Record, and Press Shift to
step through the gain settings: Blue: low -3db, Green: modular
level, Orange: medium +6db, Purple: high +12db.

3. Playback gain is reverted to pre-mg157 level to improve TLA


and Record-Into-New-Splice functions.

4. Internal processing improved to work with (2) and (3) to


significantly improve signal-to-noise ratio on input and playback.

5. Minor bug fixes.
