1. Introduction

This report contains the activities which I was done during my internship at South Bangla
Agriculture and Commerce Bank Limited (SBAC) which is a mandatory course and
requirement for complete the BBA program from North South University. I include
organization information, my work tasks and responsibilities during internship period, my
lessons learning from internship, my working relationship, my experience in this report. This
internship work experience helps every BBA student to relate their theoretical knowledge
with the internship work task. And also helps to get the real life corporate experience.

1.1 Background of the Report

As a requirement for the completion of the BBA program of North South University,
internship report is prepared. The primary goal of internship is to provide an idea on the job
exposure to the students and an opportunity for translation of theoretical conceptions in real
life situation. Students are placed in enterprises, organizations, financial institutions, research
institutions as well as development projects. I was sent to SBAC to gather the experience
within 1st October to 15th December, 2019 from North South University. The program
covers a period of 12 weeks of organizational attachment.

1
1.2 Objectives of the Study

1. To know the general banking activities of SBAC Bank.

2. To recognize the various product and services of SBAC Bank.
3. To gather the practical experience base on the theoretical knowledge.
4. Too familiar with the corporate environment and culture.
5. To serve the function of overall banker-customer relationship
6. To evaluate the function of general banking system.
7. To observe the function of commercial banking operations.
8. To suggest recommendations on the basis of findings.

1.3 Methodology of the Report

The preparation of the report requires different sorts of data to present strategies, procedures
and techniques for General Banking Operation. Both primary and secondary data have been
utilized in preparing this report. For primary data, I have considered my own 90 days
experience in the branch. My practical banking work, conversation with clients and
discussion with my supervisor and officials have helped me to gather information about the
bank. For the secondary sources, I have considered internet, websites and annual reports of
South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank Limited.

2
1.4 Limitation of the Report

While completing this study, I have faced some constraints. The followings are some of the
shortcoming, I came across:

1. Although internship program has been made for 3 months, there is a very short span
of time to get in-depth knowledge about a massive organization like SBAC Bank ltd.
2. Officials of SBAC Bank maintain a very busy schedule. So they are not always able
to provide enough time to enlighten the internee students every time, even if they had
the intention to do so.
3. The area covered by the report "General Banking” of SBAC Bank concerns a huge
number of activities and it is very difficult to sketch a total picture of the banking
activities in a report of this scale.
4. It is not possible to get all sorts of information due to official confidentiality.
However I have tried my best to make the report most representative.
5. The report would have more better and practical, as I too have shortcoming with time,
knowledge and capability.

3. My Contribution to the Organization
3.1 My Assigned Department
I did my internship program at SBAC Bashundhora Branch for three month (12 week). From
my internship program I have learned and picked up lots of corporate experience. I was
assigned in general banking division; they have desks for their intern so I got a desk for my
work. At that time my supervisor was KanizFatima she is the senior marketing officer of
SBAC Bashundhora branch.

3.1.1 Customer Service desk

As an intern I was assigned for general banking and for customer service. My first work was
learned how to open a bank account, my supervisor firstly told me what are the main papers
we need for opening a bank account. And those are:

 Introduction of the applicant (introducer)

 Two copies of passport size recent photograph (lab printed) with attested signature
 Photocopy of NID/ passport/ driving license/ birth certificate and nominee
 Account holders signature
 1 copy photo of the nominee and signature.

We need 500 taka initially and it’s the minimum balance for opening an account. Under this
500taka we can get our account and also we will get a cheque book. If we need a visa or debit
card then they charge 180taka. And also we need to deposit 500taka must for run the visa
card. They maintain and put all the records in the computer. And serial wise we will get a
new account number. Then it issues cheque book requisition slip by the customer.

My Supervisor Kaniz Fatema gave me the entire brief before gave any task. I also learned
about Savings Account, Current account, FDR and other schemes. She also helped me how
will I deal with a customer if they have the quarries about opening an account. And the other
activities were done by me those are:

9
My main task was filled up account opening forms because most of the customer don’t do
that they write wrong information so my work was from their papers full filled the account
opening forms.

 Then my second work was gave information to the client about their documents what
they need to bring to the bank for opening an account.
 Attend the telephone calls to the customers who don’t have the all document and told
to bring to the copies with them.
 Check the registered book, registering cheque boos a debit cards.
 Sometime I wrote down the KYC forms and transaction profile (TP) forms because
sometime my supervisor was so busy that she couldn’t manage time for fill the part so
she told me to do that for her under her guidance.
 I distributing the cheque book to the customer by asking their account number and
name and when they confirmed it I took their signature in cheque book register.
 Sometimes I checked the previous month forms if there were missing parts I filled it.
 I rearranged the account forms. Attached the pictures and other the documents.
 Some days I need to do some signature verification.
 Checked the missing account opening forms.

10
3.2 Lesson Learnt from the Internship Experience

My internship program was a very good opportunity for me gain corporate knowledge. Learn
new skill and improve my existing skills.

 Technical Skill: From my internship I learned how to input data in banking sector. I
worked on MS Excel. I knew little bit how to use MS Excel but some new things I
learn to work. MS Excel is a must thing for banking work. When I faced some
problem technical problem than other officers of the bank helped me out.
 Analytical Skill: analytical skills are all about multi-tasking and problem solving part
I did my internship program. I did my multiple tasks efficiently, in my internship
program some days were so challenging for me. I did many things at a day. Did
fulfill the account opening form to customer service was very hard to concentrate
everything at a day since I was very new in this profession. But I took my time for
completing my task properly whatever I got. When customer wanted my help I tried
to help them at the same time I did my other task I got from my supervisor. Day by
day multi-tasking was become easier for me because I found more new ways to do it
properly with efficiency and effectiveness.
 People Skill: the main important thing I learned from my internship was how I
developing my communication skills. I had to handle many customers, solved their
problem and talked to them was one of my works. Every customers are different from
each other they had their different problem and different people understanding skills
is different from each other. So my lesson was how we handle them well and
convince them properly. I observed many people at that time and tried to understand
them as much I can.
 Personal Skill: If I am talking about my personal skills the first thing I must told
about the time management. As we all know time management is a very important
thing for an employee. All of the work had time limit so we must do work under the
time. Come to the office on time and do work on time is very important thing.
Internship program helped me to develop my time management skills.

11
 Professional E-Mail Writing: My supervisor Kaniz Fatema communicated with
clients and head office through Email. And she always taught me how to write and
use professional E-Mail.
 Working under Pressure: As I already told in my journals that from November to
December month I was the only intern I that branch so that the working pressure was
too much. Handling the customer to work with my supervisor was really tough for an
intern but I tried to game my best. And my supervisor was actually happy for my
work and that was a great achievement for me.
 Organizing Documents: As an intern my work was organizes the all documents
properly because we all know banking document are very much confidential. Any
time they need any document and if they organize or store it properly it will be easy to
find out. Now this day’s all documents are in computer so that’s also an easy process.

12
4. Interaction with supervisor and Co-workers
Now this days communication is very easy process for us a when we are in a corporate or in a
bank we must need to have connected to each other with good communication and relation
with the officers and colleagues. In our branch officers communicate with each other through
phones, Emails, IP messages. Those are more faster and quick communication channels. For
their internal branch notices and for information’s they use their own E mail portal.

Since I was worked in General Banking department my interaction with GB department are
moderated. I worked under different age group people and everyone was formal there. But at
the same time they are very friendly. Sometime the work pressure was too high that I don’t
get clear instruction from them. And day by day I tried to cooperate with them and they also
understood my problem as well.

Every department people were not same type. I worked for a few days in credit card
department at that time my supervisor Mithun sir was so much cooperative and positive. He
helped me as much he can. And that was a nice experience for me. My supervisor was also
very helpful with me. She gave me instruction in a proper way. She also motivated me at the
same time she told me her past work experience how she overcome that problem. That’s
actually helped me a lot and it gave me the motivation in my internship period.

If I talked about the co-workers of the bank everyone was very positive and helpful. Because
of the work pressure they were busy so they could not helped me in every situations.
Sometime I helped my own self for overcome the problem. But I must say from major to
minor problem everyone tried to help me as much they can. They also helped each other that
were a great work environment. And they enjoy their work, office culture and the
environment.

13
5. Dealing with difficulties
This internship program actually changed my thinking and it also helped me to understand
how the corporate life is. Now I can relate and get the differences about the student life and
the corporate life. There were so many difficulties I faced and I think those difficulties were
learning for me. No work is actually easy.

 No Clear Instruction: Sometimes my supervisor gave me work without giving any

instruction because there were in rush. When I was very new I faced many problems
because I did not understand. When I worked in general banking sectors I face those
type of problems mostly, general banking continuously deals many clients and at the
same time general banking sector was very small in our bank. So without having
instruction work was difficult, as a new intern in rush hour any officer might give me
any urgent work without minimum instruction.
 Work Place: my desk was far away from others so when I needed some papers or any
stationery I have to get up from the seat and bring those things again and again. That’s
a problem I faced in work place.
 New Routine: My work was not the a\same all time. Some days I faced too much
pressure at my work and sometime I sat long hours without any work. I worked under
Kaniz Fatema but some days more officers gave me different task. Additionally after
my days in General Banking, a few times I was called from that point. This made
clash with my work in my assigned office.
 Irrelevant Work: As I my major is in marketing and I joined a bank as an intern so
obviously my department and the work department were not relevant to each other. So
I know minimum things about banking sector. Marketing is all about creative things
but banking is all about the numbers so basically I could not use my creative work
here.
 Multitasking: Multitasking work was not easy in a bank. But it actually helped me in
my future.

14
6. Experience VS Expectation

Working as an intern in SBAC bank for three month was not only a internship
program it was actually my life time memories and experience. I think I am lucky to
work under this bank. As a marketing major student my expectation was not that
much for this bank but day by day I got interested when I learned about the general
banking and communicate with the clients. I must say that I was being successful too
able to understand the work I had. Before joining the bank I thought the work of the
bank is much easier but actually I was wrong, talking to the customer and convincing
them was not easy. But I already told my supervisor and other officer was so much
friendly and supportive that I really don’t felt that many difficulties like others.as I
was not familiar with the work and also the environment but my supervisor made me
comfortable in that case. But experience is every work is important in their own way
and you have to be patience about your work as well. Every office culture is different
from other. So we need to cooperate with each other and SBAC do it very well I must
say. My expectation and my experience were actually very good from SBAC and I am
very happy because I was a part of it.

7. Influence in career

As I am a business department student I always wanted to work and build my career

in a corporate organization. So I must say this internship program help me and
influenced me most to get the working experience. So it was a great opportunity for
any student to improve them and get some experience.
Something else which I love the most, that was the time management of the bank.
Everybody was very punctual enough. Officers couldn't be late however nearly they
had opportunity to leave the work place time. From my supervisor and other officers I
got motivated and encouraged. They appreciated me and that appreciation impact in
my life very positively that it will help me in my future. They always influence me

15
and told me their working experience what they faced in their work life what are
wrong things and what are right. So those things really helped me in my future. They
are very corporative and friendly.
I also learned about how to deal with your co-workers and colleagues. They helped
each other when they faced much pressure and that’s a big thing. If someone did
mistakes, seniors tried to help them out and that are a really impressive thing I saw.
All together every officer was influenced me in a different way and in my mind I took
very positive things from this bank.

8. Redoing Internship

Within three month (12 week) internship program was not enough for me to learn
everything about a company or their culture. As an intern of general banking sector
most of the time I worked with account opening forms. But if in future I will get
another chance to work with them I must learn about their systematic work. And some
of the mistake what I did in this program I try to overcome with it. But I must say I
love to do work with them in future because of their environment and office culture.
SBAC Bashundhora branch is basically a ladies branch as I am a girl I must prefer
this type of organization in future.

16
9. Concluding statement
Today the banking service is very competitive. So the real from the practical materialization,
I have reached a firm and concrete conclusion. I believe that my realization will be in
harmony with most of the bankers. It is quite evident that, to build up an effective and
efficient banking system to the highest desire level computerized transaction is must for a
modern banking. SBAC Bank is a new generation Bank. It is committed to provide high
quality financial services or products to contribute to the growth of GDP of the country
through stimulating trade and commerce, accelerating the pace of industrialization, boosting
up export, creating employment opportunity for the educated youth, poverty alleviation,
raising standard of living of limited income group and overall sustainable socio-economic
development of the country. The time is not so far when it will be in a position to overcome
the existing constraints and it may be expected that by establishing a network over the
country and by increasing resources this bank will be able to play a considerable role in the
portfolio of development of financing in Bangladesh. Success in the banking business largely
depends on effective management, excellent service, latest technology, goal setting and
overall plan. SBAC Bank has every quality to do the business successfully. I think, within
few years, SBAC will achieve top class banking business bank in our country.

17
9.1 Suggestions for Future Strategic Actions

1. Branch can arrange training program on different banking rules and regulation set by
Bangladesh Bank which will optimize the efficiency of employees.
2. Branch should enhance loan provision and reserves.
3. SBAC Bank should set up more ATM booths.
4. SBAC Bank should focus on their promotional and PR activities.
5. IT section must be improved more.
6. The Management should introduce Inter departmental transfer program at SBAC
Bank.
7. The Filing System of SBAC Bank is very poor, so the filing system should be improved.
8. The bank should spend more on renovation of the branches to improve environment and
atmosphere to attract the customers.
9. The bank should use different types of media for promotion of its products and services
and to further expand its area through more aggressive marketing. Customer services
must be better to improve the efficiency of branch, which results in quality work and
causes the customer attraction.
10. Selection procedure of SBAC, is very admirable, however sometimes employees are
hired based on reference, this should be stopped
11. The Internship program of SBAC Bank has no proper structure. There should maintain a
proper guideline of the internship program.
12. An improved facility should be provided by the bank to the customers so that they can
lodge complaints or submit any innovative ideas for improvement to the bank.

Journal 1 (01-10-2019 to 03-10-2019) :
I am doing internship at SBAC (South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank Ltd),
Bashundhora ladis branch.which is situated the oposit of Grammen phone head office.

The first day of my internship is basically the orientation day. The senior officer kaniz fatema
introduce me with the branch members of the bank. The bank environment is very nice and
the people are very nicer. Everyone is very friendly. There are 5 female employee works in
the bank and we are 2 female intern. This branch is very new so this is not so much popular
branch.

Then the second and the third day of the bank was easy and boring also. They handed me all
there leaf late to know about all the services they offer and also I had to read page after pages
of the tears and conditions of opening a account. When I was not understanding any terms
and conditions I asked them and they taught me those staffs very well. Every member was
very much well behaved with me. They told us they have not expected much from an intern
so be relaxed and whatever we do it properly.

I am learning the way of a formal job environment but most important of all , I am learning
have to act, talk, dress, work like a responsible grownup and being more conscious about my
identity and career plans.

Journal 2 (06-10-2019 to 10-10-2019) :

The real work started at day four after weekend when I was so tired of sitting around and
asked them to hand me some work. In last four days of the week I have completed 20 account
opening forms including mine and it is now my every day’s duty to receive, sort and register
the parcels from principal and different branches which are mainly credit cards, VISA cards,
check books. I also do some scanning, printing and copying from time to time.

In the second week on my internship the work purser is little bit but I felt at home there. This
week was very exciting with lot of work. I learned how to open CD account, FDR, DPS,
savings account, Non individual account, and business account. I also open a saving account
and FDR. My work was this week basically wright down the new account opening forms and

21
collect the paper of the forms. Every day I completed 5 forms. When the first day of the week
I wrote down the first account opening forms that was a mass I mistook some information
and gave some extra information which was not necessary. Then I was so afraid. But my
supervisor told me it’s okay it was your first so form the next one read it carefully and take
time, then she gave me a sample account opening form. For that sample form my work was
easier and I was so shocked that she could not even shout on me and that was very
suppressing for me. They are so much friendly and helpful. At the lunch time when we sit
with the officers they told us many stories of their life and told us how to maintain office
culture and work. Those stories are very inspiring for me.

Journal 3 (13-10-2019 to 17-10-2019) :

In the third week on my internship, my regular duty is to receive parcels every day and record
them in the inward book and individually recording the check books and debit and credit
cards and hand them over to the officers of those fields, help the customer service officers in
various ways and help the customers to fill up account opening forms, fixed deposit forms,
DPS forms, Term deposit forms and account service forms.

Last 3 days of this week I work on the pending opening form. I am correcting almost 45
account opening form. Most of the forms had missing papers, pictures, phone numbers, and
many things than I called the owners of the accounts and told them to bring those missing
forms to the bank. At that time it was little bit tough for me because most of the customer told
they gave all the documents and information so they will not able to came this week. Some of
the customer were not pick up the phone calls and some account have not any contact number
so it was little bit tough to convincing the customers and talk to them properly. But I took
patient when I talked to a customer and it was a nice experience.

Journal 4 (20-10-2019 to 24-10-2019) :
This is the fourth week of my internship with SBAC bank. This week spend quite busier with
lots of works. The whole week we went to Royal School for opening the savings account of
every student. That’s a huge work, every day we took signatures and collected the personal
information of each student. Than after finishing the work we went to the bank and did our
regular work.

In this week I learnt so many things such as how to write down the checks, withdrawals and
deposit slip, and what type of interest you get from the bank when you deposit the money.

My observation was how you will convince the client for opening a bank account. Because
it’s a huge number of accounts we get from Royal school. Our senior officer and our General
Manager were talk with the principal of the school and he was convinced for opening every
student’s savings account. So I think it’s a very essential quality if you are a marketing
student.

And the notable incident was that every student was so curious for their first account and the
first debit card. I was excited too for this great experience. I have done it for the first time in
my life. Working with the school and the student was actually great and fun. Though the
work pressure was so much but it will be a memorable week for me.

Journal 5 (27-10-2019 to 31-10-2019) :

Most of this week I was busy with the account opening forms from the Royal school. We
have collected hundreds of partially finished forms of the students and this week it is all
about finishing the paper works and prepares the forms to open the accounts properly. Our
senior officer Kaniz apu is in charge of the project and she has been helping me in this matter
from the beginning.

There was nothing new to be done in our branch this week. Most of the days passed by filling
up the forms and managing and preparing the papers with them. Between these works I

23
helped my senior colleges in their little works and organizing important papers. Other then
this as usual I always try to observe them and try to learn what they are doing and how they
are doing the particular tasks and try to understand the policies behind every task.

Journal 6 (03-11-2019 to 07-11-2019) :

In the sixth week of my intern, all the duties are more or less the same as the previous weeks.
I started working with the credit card department where there was nothing more to do other
than filling up the application forms. The requirements for credit cards are, minimum salary
or income of 25 thousand BDT and in some cases reliable permanent house too. We also look
for other sources of income, assets and deposits, number of dependent people and spouse
income. Usually we set the limit equivalent to 3 months income. We have three types of
credit card based on the limits and we offer various offers at a number of shops, hotel and
restaurants. I learnt something new in this week.

Bank environment is too friendly and our senior manager, senior officer mam give us some
little advice every day and those advices inspire us. And this week spent very well.

Journal 7 (10-11-2019 to 14-11-2019) :

This is seventh week of my internship program, all my duties are same and still more and
more activities and responsibilities are being added to my daily activities. As mentioned
earlier, receiving and registering the incoming mails in the morning and managing the
outward mails in the evening, helping customers and customer service officers to fill up
account opening, credit card, term deposit and DPS forms. I run around in the branch with
register books to take signature of the customers and help the officers deliver security items
from the locked steel boxes like cheque books, ATM card, credit card, FDR advice and DPS
slip.

This week the manager sir of SBAC bank came and visited our branch. They talk to me and
ask me am I facing any problem or not. Our internship in this bank is a non-paid internship,

24
so the manager Md. Nabi sir said that interns do very well though this is a non-paid
internship. Their dedication is appreciating. So it is a very big compliment for me.

In this week my observation was if you will be a good officer than you must be polite and
helpful with your employee.

Journal 8 (17-11-2019 to 21-11-2019) :

The eight week of my internship program with SBAC bank was quite good but with a lot of
work. In this week I was the only one intern worked in this branch so my work pressure was
quite high. I covered the entire account opening from alone in this week. Not only me but
also every employee worked heard in this week because it is the second last month in this
year. Other officer also worked on Saturday but they told me I don’t need to come on
Saturday. So the week start from writing the account opening form the individual account and
the non-individual account and I am facing a lot of problem because most of the account did
not have all the proper documents so it was a big hassle call them and asking for come up
with the proper documents.

In this week my learning and observation was, no matter what the working day is you must
come if your organizations need you in off days. So you must grownup with this mindset if
you wanted to working under a company or a bank. So it is sometimes bit difficult for some
employees. Because our senior officer of the branch Mrs Kaniz Fatema mams son was little
bit sick so she told she might not come in Saturday but her request was not accepted by GM
mam.

In this week the notable incident was a women came with his brother and she was disturbed
because she does not understand about the interest rate of her deposited money so our
customer service officer tried to understanding her but she was not ready to understand the
problem. After a long time when her brother was trying to understanding her then she
convinced. So it was little bit difficult job to convincing this type of customers.

Journal 9 (23-11-2019 to 28-11-2019) :
The ninth week of my work was basically the regular day work. Filling up CD accounts and
individual accounts, calling the client who does not give all documents and told them to bring
us those documents is my regular work. From the last week I was the only intern working in
this bank. So work pressure was very high. So everyone was so busy in this week. I was
written some pending forms of February to April with the regular forms and checking out all
the completed forms of these months. So it took a long time so most of the time in this week I
went to my home around 6pm. I must say it was a very long week for me.

In this week I observed and learned something, our second manager Farzana mam. She is
almost seventh month pregnant. Most of the time her health is not that good but she is doing
her work properly. But sometimes she reacted with her colleagues, she look disturbed. But it
is very surprising for me and I was very impressed that is no one took it seriously or felt
annoyed with her. Everyone support her and listen to her though he reacted some times.
Because everyone knows she is pregnant and her mood swing is a very natural thing. So the
other colleagues support her so well. It is a very big thing for an organization to supporting
each other. And it is a very important thing.

Journal 10 (01-12-2019 to 05-12-2019) :

This is the 10th week of my internship. The time is almost over. I will miss this bank. In my
life this is the first experience to working in a bank. This is actually a really great experience
for me. I hope it wills me in future.

This week the works was as usual. All my duties are same and still more and more activities
and responsibilities are being added to my daily activities. Receiving and registering the
incoming mails in the morning and managing the outward mails in the evening, helping
customers and customer service officers to fill up account opening, credit card, term deposit
and DPS forms.

In this week I learning and observation was how to handle a customer. How to talk with
them, how to give them a good advice for their future investment. So it is very important thing

26
for a bank to handle a customer very politely. Because when a customer go to a bank for
investing their money those money what are very precious for them because they earn it with
lots of trouble. So it is very natural they want to deposit their money in a good bank. That
why our job is to build their trust. And I think SBAC bank doing it very well so this is our
achievement.

Journal 11 (08-12-2019 to 12-12-2019) :

It was the 11th week of my internship program. Probably this was the last week of my
internship. I am very glad to work in this bank. The week started with the same work I have
done early. This week went very well. I always said that the people of the bank are very
friendly and nice persons and yes I mean it because in my last time when I am done with my
internship they treat me very politely. This week the work load was little bit less than other
week. My work was general banking; full fill the account opening from and customer service.

This week my learning and observation was while I was leaving them, they gave me very
good advice. How do I achieve success in life, how can I get a job and what are the things I
must improve myself. So my learning was how to treat an employee so nicely, how we will
be an understanding colleague. They gave my internship papers with a smiley face.

Before leaving the bank I talked with them very a long time and they shared their life
experience. One by one I talked to them and every one gave me some advice. Actually these
are my achievement and I am glad because I was a part of this bank. They told me to visit the
bank sometime. Yes, I'll go visit them soon. Since I have an account in this bank so I must
deposit my money and I will meet them.

Journal 12 (15-12-2019) :
It was the 12th week of my internship program. This week my internship program was done
officially. In this week I need to go this bank for one day. I went to the bank for collecting
some paper. They evaluated my employee satisfaction form and they told me they are very
much satisfied with NSU student, their previous internship students are also good. And in
future they wanted to hire more NSU intern. So yes this is one of a great complement for me
and for my university. Definitely I would never forget this bank and the each and every
member of the bank.

Since I went to the bank for collecting my internship papers they did not give me any work.
The senior officer Kaniz Fatema apu singed my paper and gave me her best wish. They are
such a great influencer. I am blessed to have them. I learnt from them not only how to be a
good banker but also learn how to be a good human.
