Oil before shipment, which is suitable for operation in temperatures of +309 to 150°F (-2 to +65°C). The packing housings, washpipe assembly, and mud shield are shipped as loose parts. The lower sleeve coupling is installed, but has not been tightened. The following procedures are necessary to put a new swivel into operation. 1, With swivel in up-right position, loosen oil drain plug at bottom of swivel body, and drain out a small oil sample. If water or other contaminates are detected in the sample, the entire oil reservoir should be drained and flushed. If it has been six months or more since swivel was shipped from factory, oil should be drained and flushed regardless of condition. Refill reservoir to proper level with and approved gear oil (capacities are shown in the Specification Chart.) Grease bail pins and upper oil seal. Refer to Lubrication Bulletin for cil and grease specificaiton. 2. Remove lower sleeve coupling, clear and lubricate threads with drill collar compound. Make sure coupling seal is in place; install sleeve coupling and tighten with pipe tongs. 3. Install md shield by forcing it down over the threaded section of the upper sleeve into the groove just below the threads. The outer edge should lie smoothly on the upper bearing retainer. 4, Install washpipe and packing according to packing installation instructions. 2. FS-401 ROUTINE LUBRICATION AND INSPECTION All routine maintenance and inspections of the swivel should be made in accordance with the API recommendation shown in Section 2 and 3 RP8B covering Hoisting Tool inspection and maintenance procedures. QNCE EVERY 8 HOURS ~- Remove filler plug and check oil level as shown on oil level plate. - Stop pump and grease packing with 12 shots of grease. Grease upper oil seals with 4 shots. - Release tension on swivel bail and grease bail pins with 6 shots of grease. ONCE EVERY WEEK - Retighten upper and lower packing gland nuts. - Check condition of mud shield. ONCE EVERY 90 DAYS (More frequently under severe operating conditions or if oi1 becomes contaminated.) ~ Drain and flush oil reservoir. Refill with and approved oil from the list in the Lubrication Bulletin. ~ Visual check for leaks, wear and cracks which might render swivel unsafe. CRITICAL LOAD INSPECTION (When critical loads are anticipated or immed- Gately, upon experiencing a critical load or at least once a year.) - Disassembly swivel, sandblast, and Magnaflux all tension members. for cracks or other defects that would render the swivel unsafe. WHEN REPACKING SWIVEL - Inspect washpipe. Replace when worn through hard surfacing. - Inspect inside of lower packing housing. Replace when grooved or washed. - Inspect upper end of sleeve and lower side of gooseneck for washouts at O-rings (12 and 13) Fig. 2. Repair as necessary. ~ Check spacer rings for worn or washed areas. - Check mud shield. Replace if in bad condition. FS-401 3 LB-SWIVEL PACKING INSTRUCTIONS Fig. 2 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS When installing new washpipe and packing in the LB-Series swivels, follow the instructions and precautions listed below: ~ Disassemble; remove all old packing. FS-401 Thoroughly clean stuffing boxes, washpipe, metal spacers, stem and bonnet mounting surfaces. Remove all burrs and nicks with file and emery cloth. Inspect all parts and replace as required. PACKING INSTRUCTIONS (Refer to Fig. 2) ‘THOROUGHLY CLEAN BORES before installing new packing assemblies. DO NOT APPLY GREASE TO GLAND NUT BORES or to outside sur- faces of the packing spacers when installing spacer-packing ring assemblies. Insert packing rings into metal spacers. DO NOT grease the packing rings or spacer rings. Apply a light coat of light oil to the metal parts as a rust preventative. The packing should fit snugly but can be pressed in by hand. Do not drive the packing into place. Stack the packing and spacer rings up on the work bench in the same order as they fit in the lower stuffing box. A minimum of 1/32" (.8mm) gap should be present between each of the metal spacer rings to assure proper compression of the packing rings. If gap is not present, replace the spacer rings. Select the spacer (1) which is drilled and tapped for the 1/8" (3.175mm) grease fitting and insert it into the lower pack- ing gland housing (2). Align the tapped hole with in side of housing and screw the grease fitting (3) into the spacer ring. Insert each of other spacer rings (4) into the lower packing gland housing. The last ring (5) should have a groove in the side for the locking setscrew (6) and an O-ring groove on the face. FS-401 Check to be sure the groove in side of spacer ring (5) is aligned with the tapped hole inside of packing gland housing (2). Screw hex socket setscrew (6) into housing until it contacts the spacer ring, then back off 1/4 turn. This screw is to hold the packing in place for assembly, and over tightening will cause excessive wear on packing and washpipe. HAND PACK ALL CAVITIES WITH GREASE after packing and spacer ring assemblies have been installed in the gland nuts and BEFORE in- stallation of washpipe. Coat washpipe (7) with grease and push down through packing in lower packing gland housing. Place upper nut (9) over washpipe. Slide upper spacer ring (10) and packing down over washpipe carefully to avoid damage to packing ring, engaging the four locking pins in grooves in washpipe. Install smap ring (11) in groove of washpipe. Besure O-ring grooves are clean and install O-rings (12 § 13). Install assembly in swivel, being very careful that the O-rings remain in position. Tighten gland nuts as tightly as possible by hammering on the lugs with a 8 Ib. (3.6 kg) hammer. Grease at fitting (3) with about 20 shots of grease. Retighten packing after one hours operation. 6 FS-401 MAINTENANCE Should it become necessary to disassemble the swivel for inspection or repairs, the following precedures and precautions should be observed: - The lower sleeve coupling should be loosened before the swivel is renoved fron the rig. - It is recommended that the bail be removed at this time and sandblased and magnaflux inspected. Also, the bail pins and pin bores should be checked for wear. If the pin bores in the bail are worn excessively, they may be repaired by boring out the holes, not to exceed 1/2" (15 mm) oversize. A bushing .002" to .003" (0.051 to 0.076 mm) tight should be man- ufactured and pressed into the bore. Inside diameter for the sleeve is shown on the Specification Chart on pages iv and v. WELDING SHOULD NOT BE PERFORMED ON THE BAIL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - Place body in an adequate stand to support it in a vertical position. Disassemble and inspect as shown below. Bearing races can be removed by heating with a large heating torch. - Inspect swivel sleeve and body thoroughly with magnaflux or sonic inspection equipment. Replace if cracks are detected. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR BY WELDING. - Check seal area in threaded box at lower end of sleeve. If it is washed out, remachine the entire box back far enough to clean up. ~ Check body to bonnet studs; replace if damaged. These studs have a special tapered thread and require the following make- up torque: LB-140, LB-200, LB-300 105 ft. Ibs. 14.52 mkg LB-400, LB-500, LB-650 235 ft. Ibs. 32.50 mkg TON Bearings should always be heated in an oil bath, the temperature of which should not exceed 300°F (149°C). Be certain that both the oil and the container are very clean. If the oil container is in direct contact with the fire, place a rack into the container so that the bearings will not rest on the bottom. Do not heat the bearings with a torch unless it is the only possible means available. When it is necessary to use a torch, it should be used only by an experienced welder or mechanic. Hold the torch at least 6" (150 mm) away from the bearing and keep the torch moving at FS-401 7 all times, Heat the bearing only until it is hot to the touch. Use a Timpil-Stick. DO NOT OVERHEAT THE BEARING. Overheating draws the temper of the metal and makes the bearing soft and fail in service. Once the heated bearing is installed, hold it in place until it cools. NEVER USE WATER OF ANY OTHER LIQUID TO COOL A HOT BEARING. Rapid cooling will cause the surfaces of the races and rollers to "check" or crack and the bearing will fail immediately. Never strike a roller bearing with a steel hammer. If the bearing must be driven into position, use wood or a soft hammer and strike lightly. Always lubricate the housing before installing the bearing. Clean anti-seize compound, is the best lubricant for this purpose. Do not remove a new bearing from the box or wrapping until it is to be installed. Protect it from dirt and other foreign matter at all times. If a bearing must be cleaned, use a clean kerosene or other solvent. TO_REASSEMBLE LB-SWIVELS The chart in Figure 3 shows the fits, tolerances, etc., on the various parts of the swivels, and should be referred to when reas- sembling the swivel to assure proper installation is obtained. = Place the lower race of the main bearing in body bore. The outer diameter of the main bearing lower race fits the bore of the body loose to allow the race to properly align itself with the main bearing rollers after sleeve has been installed. It is essential, however, for the lower race to seat flat on the deck of the swivel bore at Point W. and have a minimum of 75% surface contact. This can be checked by the use of Prussian blue between bottom of race and top of deck, or by attempting to insert a .001" (.025mm) feeler gauge between bottom of bearing race and deck of swivel at Point Q. If race does not seat flat or have a minimum of 75% contact, rework deck as required. - Drive outer race of lower bearing into bore of swivel body with brass rod and hammer.
