Differentiability

The document discusses differentiability and provides information about lecture 2 on the topic. It includes the schedule for 12th and 11th grade classes, with topics on sequences and series being covered on specified dates. Examples of reasons for non-differentiability are given, such as a corner where one-sided derivatives differ or a cusp where the slope approaches positive/negative infinity. The relation between continuity and differentiability is explained. Theorems of differentiability are stated, such as differentiable functions remaining differentiable when combined using operations. Examples of differentiable and non-differentiable functions are provided.

JEELIVE
What happens if LHD=RHD=finite ?
If LHD = RHD = k (finite)
Example

2015 Main

A. B. 4 C. 2 D.
Reasons of Non Differentiability
Reason of non Differentiability
Case - I

A corner, where the one-sided derivatives differ

Reason of non Differentiability
Case - 2

A cusp, where the slope of PQ approaches ∞ from one side

and - ∞ from the other.
Reason of non Differentiability
Case - 3

A vertical tangent, where the slope of PQ approaches ∞ from

both sides or approaches -∞ from both sides
Reason of non Differentiability
Case - 4

Discontinuity
Relation between Continuity and
Differentiability
Relation between Derivability
& Continuity:
If f(x) is a function such that R.H.D = f(a+) = l and L.H.D. = f(a-) = m

Case - I
If l = m = some finite value, then the function f(x) is
differentiable as well as continuous
Relation between Derivability
& Continuity:
If f(x) is a function such that R.H.D = f(a+) = l and L.H.D. = f(a-) = m

Case - II
If l ≠ m but both are some finite values, then the function f(x) is
not differentiable but continuous
Relation between Derivability
& Continuity:
If f(x) is a function such that R.H.D = f(a+) = l and L.H.D. = f(a-) = m

Case - III
If at least one of the l or m is infinite, then the function is non
differentiable but we can not say about continuity of f(x).
Example

2003

A. discontinuous everywhere B. continuous as well as differentiable for all x

C. continuous for all x but not D. neither differentiable nor continuous at x = 0
differentiable at x = 0
Theorems of Differentiability
Theorems of Differentiability
1
If f(x) & g(x) are differentiable at x = a then
f(x) + g(x),
f(x). g(x)
will also be differentiable at x = a &

if g(a) ≠ 0 then the function

f(x)/g(x)
will also be differentiable at x = a.
Theorems of Differentiability
2

If f(x) is non differentiable at x = a

& g(x) is differentiable at x = a,
then
f(x) + g(x) is always non differentiable

But

f(x).g(x) can still be differentiable at x = a

e.g. f(x) = |x| and g(x) = x2

Theorems of Differentiability
3

If f(x) & g(x) both are not differentiable at x = a

then
f(x).g(x) can still be differentiable at x = a

e.g. f(x) = |x| & g(x) = |x|

and
f(x) + g(x) can still be differentiable at x = a
e.g. f(x) = |x|& g(x) = -|x|
Example Which of the following functions is differentiable at x = 0?
A. cos(|x|) + |x| B. cos(|x|) - |x| 2001
C. sin(|x|) + |x| D. sin(|x|) - |x|
Example Let a, b ∊ R and f: R ➝ R be defined by
f(x) = a cos (|x3 –x|) + b|x| sin (|x3 +x|). Then f is 2016
A. differentiable at x = 0 if a = 0 and b = 1

B. differentiable at x = 1 if a = 1 and b = 0
C. NOT differentiable at x = 0 if a = 1 b = 0

D. NOT differentiable at x = 1 if a = 1 and b = 1
