Model 110 Owner’s Manual
The Model 110 is manufactured in Right and Left Hand models. Three web width sizes, 4-1/2”, 6-1/2”
and 8-3/4”, are available. The 6-1/2” wide model is the prominent version. In this manual, most drawings
in the appendix will show the 6-1/2” model, which is referred to as the “Wide” version. The 4-1/2” model is
“Narrow and the 8-3/4” model is referred to as the “Extra-wide” version. An “Extended Body” version is
produced for handling larger diameter rolls of labels. This model has a longer body with a larger Feed
Wheel Assembly and Rewind Spool Assembly. In addition, the Extended Body version has a heavier
duty motor and driver board to move the larger roll of labels. A separate manual is provided for the
Extended Body model.
1. A product is detected and triggers the Product Switch or Product Sensor, which energizes the
Power Module Circuit Board located inside the front cover of the applicator.
2. The Power Module Board activates an electric clutch, which starts the rubber Drive Roller
turning, causing the label web to advance and dispense a label.
3. This sequence is stopped when the advancing label edge contacts the Star Wheel and
causes it to rotate or, activates the Photoelectric Label Sensor which de-energizes the clutch
and applies the electric brake. This stops the web advancement. This sequence is repeated
when the next product is detected.

1. Remove the outer feed wheel disc assembly and place a roll of labels on the axle tube.
2. Loosen the pair of socket head screws located in the hub of the inner feed wheel disc assembly.
Move the disc assembly in or out until the roll of labels is approximately centered over the label
guide plate. Tighten the socket head screws and replace the outer disc.
3. Pull the web over the guide tube assembly and down between the web guides, located on the
top of the label guide plate. Set the web guides so the web is held with minimum side play but
still moves freely.
4. Pull the web under the Star Wheel, down along the guide plate and under the upper idler roller.
Continue to pull the web forward under the spacer bar and over the Stripper Plate until the web
extends approximately 18" past the dispensing edge.
5. Bring the web back under the Stripper Plate, over the Drive Roller and around the back, pulling
the Drive Roller away and sliding the web between the Drive Roller and lower idler roller. Then
go around the front side and back under the lower idler roller.
6. Pull the web under the idler roller and up on to the front side of the rewind spool. Fasten the
web with the rewind spool clip and turn by hand until the web is held firmly.
7. Once this is done, the label tensioner assembly can be adjusted by turning the plastic
thumbscrew inward. Minimal tension should be applied to ensure the label web remains taut as it
passes through the machine.
12
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
NOTE: Both front panel switches must be activated for the applicator to work. A single label may be
dispensed when the machine is initially energized. This is normal. To avoid dispensing a label, turn the
main power switch on, trip the label sensor, and then turn on the motor switch.
13
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
the next label. Setting the Star Wheel adjusts the Star Wheel arm so that it properly activates the roller
switch as it rotates.
2. Loosen the thumb screws located on the side of the Switch Plate assembly and slide the
assembly up or down until the Star Wheel heel catches the leading edge of the label.
3. Slide the assembly up until the Star Wheel turns over and is resting on a flat side and then
tighten the thumbscrews.
4. Start the applicator and trigger the product-sensing device. This will cause a label to be
dispensed and should leave the next label's leading edge on the dispensing edge of the
Stripper Plate.
A small amount of "Label Flag" is often desirable and necessary for the proper dispensing and
positioning of the label. Label Flag is when the leading edge of the next label to be applied is
positioned so it slightly overhangs the dispensing edge of the Stripper Plate.
14
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
Once the Star Wheel has been set, the amount of Label Flag can be set. Moving the position of the Star
Wheel Label Sensor’s position relative to the dispensing edge of the Stripper Plate changes the flag. To
increase the amount of Label Flag, loosen the two thumb screws that lock the Label Sensor Assembly to
the slotted u-bracket and slide the assembly down. The distance the sensor is moved is directly
proportional to the change in flag. Re-tighten the thumb screws and test operate the applier to check the
results.
Turn the product conveyor system on. Observe how the label is dispensed onto the product. Adjust the
applicator speed to match the speed of the conveyance system. The applicator uses the Wipe-On
method of applying labels to a product. Therefore, it is important that the speed of the applicator and the
speed of the product, as the conveyor moves it, be very closely matched.
NOTE: The speed control can be increased until the labels begin to wrinkle indicating the label is being
dispensed faster then the product is moving. Then backed off until the wrinkle is gone. With heavier
label stock, the motor speed control may have to be reduced slightly. In some applications, due to the
weight of the label stock, the conveyor speed may have to be reduced for satisfactory results. Also note,
as the applicator speed is increased the Label Flag will also increase. Changing the applier speed may
necessitate re-adjusting the Label Flag.

16
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
The purpose of the Product Sensor is to initiate the labeling process by detecting the presence of the
product as it is moved down the conveyor line. A typical sensor is a photo eye directly connected to a
jack on the rear panel of the applier. It is always positioned somewhere prior to the label application
point. When the Product Sensor detects the product, it signals the applier to dispense a label. Because
the product is in motion, the position of the sensor with respect to the application point (Stripper Plate)
affects the final location of the label on the product. If the sensor detects the product too early, the label
may be applied to early on the product and vice versa. The following illustration helps explain.
NOTE: Before positioning the sensor, set the Delay potentiometer to 50% of full value. The product
sensor may be wired for leading or trailing edge sensing. Depending on the application, the product
sensor may signal the applicator to dispense a label when the sensor first detects the leading edge of the
product or may signal the applicator as the trailing, or back edge of the product passes the sensor.
1. If the label is dispensed too soon onto the product, move the Product Sensor’s position toward
the discharge end off the conveyor. The distance the sensor is moved is directly related to the
distance the label will move on the product as it is labeled. (See section 3.1 for product sensing
devices).
2. If the label is dispensed too late onto the product, move the Product Sensor’s position toward the
entrance end of conveyor.
(In conjunction with adjusting the Product Sensor position see section 2.8 Label Delay)
17
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
18
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
As discussed before, the amount of delay is controlled not only by the Delay potentiometer but also by the
Delay jumpers on the Power Module circuit board located behind the applier’s front panel. The following
illustration shows the different combinations available to set the amount of Label Delay.
The normal factory default configuration for the Delay Jumpers on the Power Module Board is to have S1
and S2 jumped. If more delay is desirable, sequentially add jumpers S3, S4 and S5.
NOTE: When performing the initial Product Sensor positioning, it is best to have the Delay
potentiometer set at 5 on the dial (Stand-alone model) and 500 (Conveyor System model) so
maximum plus and minus delay adjustment is available when fine tuning the label position on the
product.
19
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
The Rewind Slip Clutch is preset at the factory and normally does not require adjustment.
The Rewind Spool uses a Slip Clutch (shown above) on the rewind shaft to control web tension. The
clutch is adjusted clockwise to increase tension, reducing slip or counterclockwise to decrease tension,
increasing slip.
The Rewind Spool is coupled to the drive at a slightly higher speed than the drive shaft. When the drive
moves, the rewind shaft moves with it at a higher rotation speed and must slip slightly. If the Rewind
Spools’ web tension is insufficient, slack will occur when each label is applied. This can result in the
waste web being pulled into the drive and idler rollers causing a web jam. The machine stops due to
binding. If the tension is excessive, the web can tear or break. Small labels require less tension on the
rewind spool. Large labels with heavy rolls require greater tension on the Spool.
20
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
3. RETROREFLECTIVE SENSOR
The retroreflective product sensor uses a reflector to create a constant beam that the product
breaks and outputs the signal to dispense a label.
NOTE: In most cases, the Model 110 Applicator is shipped with the machine set up to activate and
dispense a label when the Product Sensor detects the Trailing Edge of the product. Some
applications work better when the label is dispensed immediately or on Leading Edge product
detection. This setting can be changed. Contact your Distributor or Auto Labe directly for
information on how to make this change.

1. Mode Setting - On the back of the sensor housing are two setting adjustments.
As shown in the illustration above, the top adjustment selects the operating
mode. The two operating modes selectable are “Dark On”, selected by aligning
the adjustment with the “D”, and “Light On”, selected by rotating the adjustment
to align with the “L”. Dark On Mode makes the sensor output a signal when no
reflected light is detected from the product. In Light On Mode the sensor
provides an output when it detects reflected light from the product.
22
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
Calibration of the sensor is done using its “Autoset” feature described below.
Calibration:
1. Align the sensor over the gap between labels on the web. You can also remove one label
and position the blank web within the sensor.
2. Push the button marked “NORMAL” to auto calibrate (Autoset) the sensor.
Once calibrated, the green Autoset light should be lit continuously while the red Output light should be lit
when the sensor is over the gap between labels. If the sensor is located several labels from the Stripper
Plate, removing a label to calibrate the sensor may cause more than one label to be dispensed during the
calibration process.
Calibration using the “Translucent” auto calibration button is the same as for normal labels. This sensor
cannot detect transparent labels on a transparent background.
On rare occasions, when the light is unable to penetrate the web backing materials, both the red and
green indicator will blink four times indicating that the sensor is unable to detect the label.
The status of the red led and output transistors can be inverted by pressing both buttons simultaneously.
When the output status has been inverted, the red led and the output transistors will turn off when the
label comes into view.
Whenever a different label is used, the Label Sensor should be recalibrated. If the sensor cannot be
calibrated, check the Sensor to determine if a piece of label material is stuck in the sensors slot.
23
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
Setting the Label Flag with the photoelectric label sensor is identical to the Star Wheel. Simply loosen the
thumbscrews holding the sensor’s mounting bar in place on the slotted bracket and move the sensor up
or down until the desired Label Flag is achieved. (See Section 2.5)

Model 110 Owner’s Manual
5.1 Lubrication
All shafts turn in bearings, which require no lubrication. Unnecessary lubrication will attract dust, dirt and
other debris that can degrade machine performance.
5.2 Cleaning
CAUTION: De-energize the equipment prior to performing maintenance. Do not attempt to
remove stray labels from moving components. Do not use sharp objects (tools) that can damage
roller surfaces when removing stray labels.
Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain peak applicator performance. Label adhesive residue can
buildup on rollers and other surfaces. Over time, this will reduce label registration accuracy. The Drive
Roller becomes hard, glazed and slippery reducing the roller’s grip on the web. In addition, product spills
contaminate critical contact surfaces resulting in similar performance degradation.
The recommended cleaning product is mineral spirits. A shop rag or paper towel dampened in mineral
spirits is very effective in removing label adhesive and other contaminates without affecting roller integrity.
A suitable, less effective substitute is isopropyl alcohol. A regimen that includes cleaning the applier daily
or after each shift will aid in maintaining equipment performance. Clean up product spills immediately.
Less frequently, removing the applier’s top cover and vacuuming out the unit is recommended. This can
be done on a monthly to quarterly basis depending on usage. Over time the belts wear resulting in small
particles of rubber accumulating inside the unit. The clutch and brake may leak small amounts of oil.
After vacuuming, wipe out the unit with a shop towel dampened with mineral spirits. Inspect the drive
belts for integrity and wear and replace when necessary. The Feed Wheel should be inspected. Remove
all stray labels immediately, and remove any adhesive with mineral spirits. The O-Ring on the Feed
Wheel Axle Tube Assembly acts as a brake and should be replaced if it becomes cracked or dry-rotted.
NOTE: The clutch/brake armatures inside the applier must be kept clean and dry, and especially
free of oil.

Model 110 Owner’s Manual
The dispensing edge of the Stripper Plate is covered in a 2-inch wide strip of UHMW tape. The purpose
of this tape is to reduce friction as the web travels across the edge of the Stripper Plate. The sharp u-turn
the web makes as it moves past this point is what peels the label from the web liner. The UHMW tape or
Lubricating Strip helps prevent the web from tearing by smoothing the sharp edge and significantly
eliminating the amount of friction.
Over time the strip will wear reducing its effectiveness. Gouges and other surface defects in the strip can
cause problems. Replace this strip (Part # 408015) when it is in poor condition and when web tearing
becomes a problem.
28
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
Upon installing a new roll of labels, follow the webbing diagram on the side of the applicator and web in
such a manner that the labels are in a straight line from the roll of labels all the way back to the rewind
spool. At this point, you should adjust the spring collars on the feed wheel guide tube to help hold the
labels in line. DO NOT adjust the web guides on the label sensor assembly until you have achieved
correct alignment.
29
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
Once the roll of labels is installed, advance several labels to see if the label web starts to travel in either
direction (side to side) on the Stripper Plate.
If the web maintains its position, and remains in a straight line on the Stripper Plate, you have correct
label tracking. At this point, you may adjust the web guides on the label sensor assembly. (Note: The web
guides should only be moved if changing to a different label width).
If the label web travels in either direction on the Stripper Plate, the waste web will begin to appear from
underneath the labels on one side or the other. When this occurs, turn the applicator off and adjust by
loosening the two screws that attach the Stripper Plate on the same side that the waste web is visible on.
Pull the Stripper Plate forward, very slightly, and retighten screws. Carefully realign the position on the
Stripper Plate to see how the web travels. Continue to make this adjustment until the web maintains its
position on the Stripper Plate and remains in a straight line. Once you have correct label tracking, you
may adjust the web guides on the label sensor assembly.
2. Dispensing edge of applicator Stripper Plate too far from product: Adjust Stripper Plate via Stripper
Plate height adjuster or hand crank on the applicator stand.
3. Leading edge of label not close enough to dispensing edge of Stripper Plate: See step 2.5 in setting
up the applicator to adjust.
4. Label web binding: Check web guides and label tension drag. Check for adhesive build up on label
web contact surfaces.
8. Drive Roller not parallel with upper idler roller: place a narrow strip of waste web at both ends of Drive
Roller, between the Drive Roller and upper idler roller. The two strips, now trapped between the
rollers, should have the same "drag" when pulled. If not, adjustment is made by loosening the two
screws located on the opposite end of the drive shaft, on the other side of machine. Slide the drive
shaft either toward the front or rear of the applicator until proper "drag" is achieved. Tighten screws.
Definition of "drag" - Tension used to pull waste web strips between Drive Roller and idler roller.
30
Model 110 Owner’s Manual
Adjust the Star Wheel height by removing the cover over the switch assembly and loosen the two screws.
Pivot the Switch Plate assembly down moving the Star Wheel toward the labels and tighten the cap
screws. To verify that the Star Wheel is now at the right height manually pull the web forward until the
leading edge of the next label catches on the Star Wheel point and begins lifting the Star Wheel Arm. As
the arm lifts it should actuate the switch causing an audible "click". As the label continues to advance the
Star Wheel point will pass its center, causing the arm to start lowering. As the arm lowers the switch
should de-actuate with an audible "click".
