ANS 1 - Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineers apply their knowledge of various chemical properties to
develop new chemical substances (such as fuels, lubricants, or cleaning
solvents) or improve and existing ones. They may also serve as trouble-
shooters by helping to examine and improve industrial processes using the
application of better chemical systems.

Many chemical engineers work for industrial companies which develop

products directly related to chemical compounds. In this setting, they may
work in product development, involving research and experimenting on
chemical processes and formula weights to either develop or improve
products which contain them. Much of this work depends on the engineer's
own background in chemical processes to understand safe compounds, as
he/she may also be tasked with conducting extensive experimentation in a
variety of settings to determine the utility and optimal use of these
chemicals.

Chemical engineers also work to help reduce waste and inefficiency in

industrial settings. For example, they may help establish benchmarks for which
lubricants and fuels are used in machinery in an assembly plant, or proper
holding, shipping, and dispensing procedures and equipment to avoid
corrosion and wear-and-tear on existing equipment.

A college degree in chemical engineering or a related field may be

required for this position, and many engineers seeking this career path begin
with internships in school and then search for a junior-level position upon
graduation. Chemical engineers may work in offices, factory settings, or even in
the field, and some jobs are likely to require a combination of these.
Proficiency with computers and automated chemical equipment, such as
spectrometers, may also be required.

Pay range and average pay of Chemical Engineer

in different cities and the median.
Delhi

Ahmedabad
Mumbai
Does geographical location impact the pay
package? If, so how?

 The cost of

living vary
from city to
city, so it's no
surprise that a company may pay different amounts

for the same position depending on

where it's located. Survey says 38% weightage is
given to this factor.

 A higher salary
in one city may be expected to afford the
job-holder the same quality of life as she could expect in the
same position in a less expensive city. But it often doesn't due
to the effect of taxes and local inflation rates. Survey says 89%
of weightage is given to this factor

 Consumer price index is one of the major factors which

determines weighted average of prices of consumer’s goods
and services which changes according to the location. Survey
says 13% of weightage is given to this factor.

Q. 2 What factors may account for the wide differences among

salaries for different occupations?
Ans 2 (a) Factors that may account for the wide differences among
salaries for different occupation are:-

Difference in level of responsibility and job duties: - There is a difference

between the responsibility and job duties among different occupation.

1.The professor refer to the most senior academic position ,they often conduct
original research and commonly teach undergraduate ,professional or post
graduate courses in their fields of expertise so they get the most highest salary
among these occupation.

2. Manufacturing Engineer - Engineering activities involved in the creation and

operation of the technical and economic processes that convert raw materials
and other purchased items into components for sale to other manufactures.

3. Construction Manager - Construction Manager is a professional service that

uses specialized, project management techniques to oversee the planning,
design and construction of a project from beginning to its end.

4. Financial Analyst – Financial Analyst is responsible for making

recommendation about investments and money saving strategies.

Different in levels of educational requirements -

To become the professor we must have post graduate degree in their fields of
expertise.

To become the manufacturing engineer the qualification required is a

bachelor’s degree in engineering and knowledge of computer design.

To become the construction manager the qualification required is completion

of any relevant form of degree.

To become the financial analyst we should hold a degree in bachelor’s degree

in finance or related field, such as business as a minimum.

So their pay ranges differ according to their educational background.

Difference in levels of experiences and skills -We know that to become a
professor is not easy ,we must have a post graduate degree to become a
professor so they are paid high because they have high level of experiences in
their field .

So as well as manufacturing engineer, construction manager and financial

analyst also have different levels of experiences in their own fields so they are
paid according to work and experience the individual

IMBALANCE IN DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF LABOR

In this scenario, the occupations with high attrition rate (more demand) will
always have lesser pay scale range than the other case scenario.
Shortage of supply of personnel in different occupations can lead to higher pay
scale.

(b) What factors may account for the differences among the salaries
for the identical occupation in different organizations?

Ans (b) The factors that may account for differences among the
salaries for the identical occupation in different organizations :-

1. Credentials. Workers who have advanced education or hold

professional certification or licensure may earn more than other
workers in the same occupation in different organization.

2. BARGAINING STRENGTHS
Trade union is an association of workers forming a legal unit which
acts as a bargaining agent and legal representative for a unit of
employees in all matters of law or right.

Example of this scenario-

Hyatt Mumbai’s F&B Associate’s salary is different from the salary
of Hyatt Regency
Mumbai’s salary as they are supported by a trade union group of
Maharashtra.

3. AGE OF THE COMPANY

Company’s establishment in the market and its goodwill can be one of
the major factors of difference in pay scale of same position amongst
different organizations.
Thus, above mentioned factors can be considered for differences in
salaries for identical occupations in different organizations.

4. Geographic location - Some states or areas have higher wages

than others for jobs in an occupation. Local demand for the work and
cost of living are among the geographic factors affecting wages. So
the pay vary according to geographical location in different
organization although in identical occupation.

Q3. Define Job Evaluation and Compensation factor. Using the point
method of Job Evaluation
Prepare the Job Evaluation format for the Job Description that you
had submitted in CE1

Ans 3 – Job evaluation is the technique of analysis and assessment

of jobs to determine their relative value within the firm so that a fair
wage and salary structure can be established for various jobs. It is
the process of close scrutiny and assessment of the relative value of
jobs in an organization to ascertain their relative labour worth. Job
evaluation is the first step towards formulation of a proper wage
structure.

Objectives of Job Evaluation:

(i) It aims at developing a systematic and rational wage structure.

(ii) It aims at establishing consistency between the wage and salary

structure adopted within the firm and that of the other firms.
(iii) Proper job evaluation helps to settle disputes relating to
salaries between the employers and employees and thus helps prom

Methods for Job Evaluation are-

Ranking method

In this method, jobs are arranged from highest to lowest, in order of

their value or merit to the organization.

Job Classification

Here, the accurate defining and evaluation of duties and

responsibilities, tasks, authority of level of jobs is done and further
the pay scale is decided.

Point Method

It is a systematic and analytical method which determines a relative

score for a job. Jobs can then be banded into grades and the grades
can be used to determine the pay

Factor comparison

Here, instead of allocating ranks to a job as a whole, the factors are

allocated ranks in a specified series. The aim of this method is to
assign financial value to the relative parts of each job role.

Job evaluation is a systematic method by which compensation

professionals compare jobs to determine pay rates that are internally
equitable and externally competitive. The point method is a widely
used technique in which factors that are important to the job are
rated numerically.
Compensable Factors

The job evaluation analyst begins by identifying compensable factors

which are common across the jobs being evaluated. These are
grouped in categories such as skill, responsibilities, effort and
working conditions, each with several sub factors. For example, the
“skill” category might be divided into experience, education and
ability.

Assigning Points

The analyst divides each factor to be used into levels and defines and
assigns points to each.

Weighting

Once this is done for all the compensable factors to be used, the
analyst examines individual jobs to determine which factors are the
most important, assigning weights to the categories.

Categorizing the Job - In the final step, the job evaluation analyst
totals the points for the job and groups it with other jobs with similar
job totals. This group will eventually become the job pay grade,
ensuring that even dissimilar jobs can be compared equitably.
