Pr σ =6 dB: Problem 6

1) The interference margin is -10log10(1-0.6) = -4dB and the shadow fading margin is 9dB based on a standard deviation of 6dB and coverage probability of 93%. 2) Based on the link budget tool, the cell range for WCDMA speech service is 1.2344km in a large city. 3) The system is downlink limited. 4) With 20dB penetration loss, the inter-site distance for 384kbps data services using a 3 sector site would be 998m.

Problem 6.

Using provided WCDMA link-budget excel tool

(a) Compute interference and shadow fading margins for load factor 0.6/0.5 (DL/UL), SF standard
deviation 6 dB, and area coverage probability 93%?
Interference fading marigion
Interference margin = −10⋅log10 (1− Target load)
Shadow fading marigion
Pr cov=0.93
σ =6 dB
The shadow fading marigion is given by
SFM=σ .Q−1 (1−P cov )
=6db.Q−1 (1−0.93)
=6db.Q−1 (0.07)
=6dB*1.5, i.e. Q−1 (0.07)≈ 1.5 from the given curve, and
SFM =9dB
(b) Compute corresponding range for a large city based on the given excel sheet for link budget of
WCDMA speech service? (Note: change only parameters given in (a) and related parameters)
soln
Based on the given okumera-Hata model excel sheet
The range R=10α [km], where α = ( L pro-a)/b [dB]
α =(146.466−137.141)/35.7435 [dB] =0.260886594
R=100.26088694=1.2344km
 The cell range is 1.82344km
Where, L pro isthe allowed propagation loss
a=Path loss constant (large city)

b=Path loss exponent

It seems that WCDMA and GSM 1800 admit the same speech coverage (recall that GSM 1800
range were round 1.58 km). Actually if we would have used the same cable loss then cell range
would have been 1.58 km also for WCDMA. Yet, WCDMA link budget contains
much more parameters => more potential error sources in dimensioning.

(c) Is the system uplink or downlink limited?

 system is clearly downlink limited
(d) If we assume 20dB penetration loss, what will be the inter-site distance for 384kbps data
services assuming a 3 sector sites?
soln
In previous link budgets indoor penetration loss were 0dB. If we assume 20dB penetration loss
(usual value) then

12.2kbps speech Allowed propagation loss 126.466 129.021

Downlink range 0.502740 km

Uplink range 0.592688 km

Cell range 0.502740 km

384 kbps data Allowed propagation loss 123.595 120.051

Downlink range 0.417852 km

Uplink range 0.332561 km

Cell range 0.332561 km

Inter-site distance (3 sector cell) = 3 x range. Hence, inter-site distances are 1508m for speech
and 998m for 384kbps data (UL). In practice inter-site distances are even smaller in urban areas
due the more pessimistic (realistic) parameters.
