Identification of ILI / SARI / ARI Cases As Per WHO Case Definition (Referred and Systematic Collected Samples)

The document defines three types of respiratory illnesses: severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), influenza-like illness (ILI), and acute respiratory illness (ARI). It provides guidance on sample collection for real-time RT-PCR testing, including using nasal swabs or throat swabs placed in viral transport medium on ice for transport to the lab. The document outlines testing for influenza viruses and other respiratory viruses using real-time RT-PCR and duplex RT-PCR. It describes subtyping positive influenza samples to identify influenza A lineages (H1N1 or H3N2) or influenza B lineage.

Identification of ILI / SARI / ARI cases As per WHO case definition (Referred and Systematic collected samples)

Severe acute respiratory infections (SARI): An acute repiratory infection with a history of fever or measured fever of ≥ 38° C and cough with onset within the last 7
days and requires overnight hospitalization.
Influenza like Illness (ILI): Acute onset within the last 10 days following respiratory symptoms, measured fever of ≥ 38° C and cough.
Acute respiratory illness (ARI): Sudden onset of respiratory infection symptoms ( cough, sore throat shortness of breath, coryza)

Sample Collection: Optimum viability of Influenza virus is at 2-8oC; NP swab / Throat swab / Nasal aspirate (place on ice / cold packs at 2-80C /
40C for transport to lab) in vial containing 1-3 ml VTM. Swab should be collected with Synthetic tip (Polyster / Plastic shift)
