Watch-ing
“I will influence your mind two times. The first time I will
influence your conscious mind, and the second time I will
influence your subconscious mind."

The mentalist removes a blank business card and a pen from

his pocket, and he writes something and folds it so the
writing cannot be seen. He places it onto the table in full
view. He now removes his wristwatch.

“I will place the hands of the clock exactly at 12:00 as a

reference point.

"I want you to spin the hands of the watch and stop when
you feel it is right. If my influence over your conscious mind
works, you will stop exactly at the hour and minute I have
written on that piece of paper.”

The mentalist hands the watch to the spectator and then

places his hand over his spectator's shoulder. They both can
look at the face of the watch.

“Look at the face of the watch and start moving the hands.
Stop when you feel it is right for you.”

The spectator does as instructed. He spins the hands for a

while, and suddenly he decides to stop.

“So you stopped at 3:15. Interesting...”

“Now I will try to influence your subconscious mind. This will

be a little bit harder for me...”
The mentalist removes another blank business card from his
pocket, and again he writes something and folds it so the
writing cannot be seen and places it onto the table close to
the other one. The mentalist takes the watch.

“Again, I will place the hands of the watch at exactly 12:00.

"This time, you will move the hands of the watch, but
without seeing them. The watch will be facedown. We will
work with your subconscious mind.”

The mentalist now hands the watch face down to his

spectator, and again he places a hand over his shoulder.

“Move the hands of the watch until you feel that it feels right
to stop...”

The spectator again stops.

“Let's see where you stopped... 6:50. Very good.

"These papers were in full view the whole time. Let's see...

"First, you consciously stopped at 3:15. That was exactly the

hour and minutes at which I wanted you to stop!”

The mentalist opens the paper, and there it says,

"Consciously 3:15."

“Then, you subconsciously stopped at 6:50. That's what I

wanted you to do!”

He opens the second paper, and it says, "Subconsciously

6:50."
Methodology:
The method is simply Bev Bergeron wonderful Force from his
book “Predicting Time” combined with the one-ahead
principle.

What makes this piece extremely deceptive is that

the force seems much fairer and more impossible than
the free selection! Also, the use of the one-ahead in this
case appears very clean, as you never ask for the unknown
piece of information.

1. Before the spectator makes the first selection (the

"conscious" selection), write down "Subconscious -
6:50" on a slip of paper and fold it up. Place it away from
you, but keep it in view. Tell the spectator that you have
made a prediction regarding their conscious decision.

2. Set the time to 12:00 as in the presentation. Hand the

watch to the spectator face up, pull out the stem and have
the spectator move the hands until they are satisfied with the
outcome. Once the spectator stops, make note of the time
(let's say 3:15), as this will be used for the second prediction
you are about to make. Once the spectator has set the time
and you note what it is, act as if you are pleased with the
result.

3. Write down your second prediction. It should

read "Conscious - 3:15." Place it with the first prediction—
away from you, but in full view. Note: Pay attention to the
position of each slip, as you will want to open them in order
during the ending revelation.

4. Moving on, you tell the spectator that she is now going to
make a "subconscious" decision. Take the watch from the
spectator and tell her you are setting it to 12:00. In reality,
you are setting it to the time you decided upon in step one:
the force time (i.e. 6:50 in our example). Turn the watch
over so that its face points downward and cannot be seen.
As you turn the watch over (or any time attention is away
from the watch), you want to push the stem back in. This will
effectively force the spectator to "stop" at 6:50, since they
will be unable to set the time!

5. Briefly recap what has just happened and create a bit of

time misdirection. Finally, open the "conscious" prediction
first and have the spectator read your prediction aloud. Then,
open the "subconscious" decision and have the spectator
confirm this prediction as well.
The mentalist has successfully influenced the spectator twice,
both consciously and subconsciously!

Additional thoughts:
Make sure that your spectator spins the stem forward and
backward. Try to extend the period of time he does it as
much as you can. This will make them completely lose track
of where the hands should be when they spin the watch face
down (force).

Don't use spectators own watch, usually they are familiar

with the workings of their own watch and we don't want that!
I personally just use mine or I ask a third person for his
watch.

Colin's Kolintrol has nothing to do with watchs, but the plot
