PRINT] Printer migration by PrintBRM and configuration file between Windows

2003 SP2 and Windows 2008 R2

Recommended printer migration from Windows 2003 SP2 32-bit on Windows 2008
R2 Print Server

The idea behind this recommendation is from a Windows 2003 SP2 print server only the
printer queues to migrate without even the old drivers, print processors and monitors to
migrate. The printer queues will, take the new printer driver when importing on Windows
2008 R2, based on the configuration file.

1. first, you must create a list of printer drivers.

Then check which printer driver with current/compatible versions are exchanged.

Here an example:
# Windows 2003 SP2 print server:
# Driver:
x 86:

Generic / text only

HP Color LaserJet 8500 PCL

HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL

HP LaserJet 5000 Series PCL

x 86 and x 64:

HP business inkjet 2200/2250 (HPA)

# Printers:

x 86 and x 64:

HP business inkjet 2200/2250 (HPA)

x 86:

Generic01 - generic / text only

HP01 - HP business inkjet 2200/2250 (HPA)

HP02 - HP Color LaserJet 8500 PCL

HP03 - HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL

HP04 - HP LaserJet 5000 Series PCL

2. the configuration on Windows 2008 R2 is after the printer migration, look like this:
# Windows 2008 R2 Print Server:
# Driver:
x 86 + x 64:

Generic / text only

HP01 - HP business inkjet 2200/2250 (HPA)

HP Universal printing PCL 6 (v5. 5.0)

# Printers:
Generic01 - generic / text only

HP01 - HP business inkjet 2200/2250 (HPA)

HP02 - universal printing PCL 6 (v5. 5.0)

HP03 - universal printing PCL 6 (v5. 5.0)

HP04 - universal printing PCL 6 (v5. 5.0)

Generic01 and HP01 will retain the same driver, generic / text only , and HP Business Inkjet
2200/2250 (HPA)
HP02, HP03 and HP04 should the new universal printing PCL 6 (v5. 5.0) get.
3. the necessary driver must be installed first on the Windows 2008 R2 .
The x 86 versions the same driver must remote Print Management from a x 86 Windows client
be transferred.
Since it is here to a Windows 2008 R2, 32-bit Windows 7 client required.
On the Windows 7 client are the necessary x 86 versions of the driver installed first.
Then added to by Print Management of Windows 2008 R2 Print Server :
4. now the box is clicked under Windows 2008 R2 drivers to check whether the driver on the
server are played back.
On the Windows 2008 R2 Print Server is as example x 64 HP Universal printing PCL 6
already installed and the x 86 version is required.
The necessary x 86 version can be installed as follows by the client on the server: [print
management > print servers > print servers > drivers > context menu > add driver]
> Here is only x 86 selected:
> Opens the DriverStore of Windows 7 and the necessary x 86 must be selected:

> x 86 driver files are copied by client on the print server:

5. after the installation of the necessary 86 and x is x 64 drivers on the Windows 2008 R2 Print
Server checks whether all are available:

6. from Windows 7 client or Windows 2008 R2 server a -NOBIN is by PrintBRM backup file
the printer queues by Windows 2003 SP2 print server created.
It is all migrated out of the drivers.

> printbrm-B - S servername-F file location - nobin

Example: > printbrm-B - S 04win2k3 f C:\Prbackup\04win2k3 - nobin

> Any error messages to appear.

7. as described in the following blog a is DRVMAPPING.XML file:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2009/02/20/two-minute-drill-printbrm-and-the-config
uration-file.aspx
These can be easily created using Notepad .
The following parameters must be created with the old and new drivers:
< DriverMap >

< DRV old "old driver name" = new = "New Driver Name" / >

< / DriverMap >

Such a parameter will be needed for each printer driver which you replace with another on
Windows 2008 R2.
If the driver is not replaced, as in the generic / text only , and HP Business Inkjet 2200/2250
(HPA), then no parameter must be entered here my example, only the drivers need to be installed
already on the Windows 2008 R2 Print Server.
In the following example to see is how, I want that the printer queues the following 3 drivers use,
Windows 2008 R2 after the migration the HP Universal printing PCL 6 (v. 5.5.0) use:
HP Color LaserJet 8500 PCL
HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL
HP LaserJet 5000 Series PCL

8 file as DRVMAPPING.XML store.

9. now, the necessary files are created: backup file of the printer queues (04win2k3) and the
configuration file (DRVMAPPING.XML).

10. migration of printer queues perform file and PrintBRM configuration file with the backup:
> printbrm-R - S servername-F file location - C config file location
Example: > printbrm-R - S 05win2k8r2 F c:\prbackup\04win2k3 C
c:\prbackup\drvmapping.xml
! Error messages appear there for the drivers which are no longer used:
11 post-migration R2 Print Server is checked for the Windows 2008 if all printer queues are
imported and that the correct printer driver is assigned to.
Then the printer queues are checked for their functionality: settings, test pressure, etc.
Printer queues on Windows 2008 R2:

Drivers on Windows 2008 R2 - no driver from the Windows 2003 SP2 were imported to the
new print server:

Printer queues using the print processor allocated printer driver:
