MODERN
ARCHITECTS

4
WILLIAM MORRIS, UNITED
KINGDOM, 1834-1896
He was a very influential English architect within the artistic world, in addition to
being the founder of the Arts and Crafts movement that totally rejected industrial
production in the decorative arts and architecture.
I bet on the return to craftsmanship as in the Middle Ages, where the designer
had the status of an artist. Although he was a multidisciplinary artist, and for a
long time in his life he designed furniture, he was a printer, poet, writer, political
activist, painter, and is known by the name of Red House, United Kingdom,
1859.

ANTONI GAUDÍ, SPAIN, 1852-1926.

He is undoubtedly one of the most famous architects of the twentieth century,
this prolific architect is the greatest exponent of modernism, a movement
characterized by its color, sinuous curves and motifs inspired by the organic.
They say that his culminating work is the church of the Sagrada Familia,
although all his work is equally spectacular. Always full of color, textures,
shapes, I assure you that you will not find straight lines in your works. I leave
you with two of his most representative works, the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona,
Spain, 1882-Inacabada and Casa Batlló, Barcelona, Spain, 1877.

5
FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, EE.UU.,
1867-1959
Frank Lloyd Wright is a Wisconsin native who has become one of the most
celebrated architects in the world. He was interested in the low-lying style houses
that dominated the part of the world where he grew up, and Wright created the
Prairie House style as a reaction to the prevailing Victorian aesthetic. His most
famous building, Falling Water (a residence in Bear Run, PA) has been hailed as
one of the coolest houses and best pieces of architecture in the world. The property
features stacked rectangular balconies that appear to float over the natural waterfall
which has been incorporated into the house itself.

WALTER GROPIUS, GERMANY, 1883-1969

I do not know if he is better known for his work as founder and director of the
famous Bauhaus or as an architect or urban planner. One of his contributions to
the world of architecture is to build high in large cities, create large blocks of
housing to solve social and urban problems.
He was an advocate of rationalization in the construction industry and design
production, here you have two magnificent and well-known examples of his

6
work, the Panam Tower (MetLife today), New York, United States, 1958-63 and
Los Archives of the Bauhaus, Berlin, Germany, 1976-1979.

LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE, GERMANY, 1886- 1969

We return to Barcelona but this time to clash with pure rationalism, marble,
glass and iron were the preferred materials of Ludwig. His architectural style
used advanced structural techniques, and applied Prussian classicism, the
German Pavilion is a great example of his work and philosophy.
He is one of the famous architects of the Bauhaus, of which he was also
director, he was dean of the Chicago school of architecture, during his exile in
the United States. One of its iconic works is the Seagram building in New York,
considered the ultimate expression of international style. However the
Farnsworth House in Illinois, United States, 1951 and The German Pavilion for
the

International Exhibition of Barcelona, Spain, 1929, are his two best known
works.

7
LE CORBUSIER, SWITZERLAND,
1887-1965
Le Corbusier is one of the most famous architects in the world and was a pioneer of
modern architecture as we see it today. He was born in Switzerland and became a
French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades and he was instrumental
in creating some of the world's best buildings. Le Corbusier designed buildings in
Europe, Japan, India, and North and South America.

PHILIP JOHNSON,
EE. UU, 1906- 2005
Perhaps from the list he is
the least known by name,
but not by his work, he
collaborated with Mies in
the design and
construction of the famous
Seagram building in New
York. Johnson's most
famous work is probably
the Glass House, in
Connecticut. It is a ground floor building, with a slender metal structure, without
dividing walls and with a facade entirely of glass, a clear legacy of his colleague
Mies.

FRANK OWEN GEHRY, CANADA,

1929

8
Frank Gehry has grown from his West Coast of America origins and has become
the most famous architects in the world right now. He is considered one of the
world's best architects and is most known for his epic design that became a tourist
hotspot - the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Gehry is also extremely well
known in America for his work on Los Angeles' Walt Disney Hall and is renowned
for his work with metal - something which was applied to both of these buildings.
Gehry is also the man behind the Dancing House in Prague and Le Fondation
Louis Vuitton in Paris, both of which have become iconic buildings in their
respective cities.

RICHARD MEIER, EE. UU., 1934

Meier stands out for granting the same importance to the clarity of lines, to
harmony, to spaces and the light. For the most part, Meier's buildings are white,
the color that he considers the purest and that gathers all the others and
changes its tone during the day.
According to Meier, Le Corbusier has exerted a great influence on him, as has
Frank Lloyd Wright. However, he believes that architecture is a discipline that is
in a continuous flow, which will change over the years and architects mark
styles that influence others. I emphasize the church Jubilee Church in
Cleveland, United States, 2003 and the Macba in Barcelona, Spain, 1995.

9
NORMAN
FOSTER, UNITED KINGDOM, 1935
Sir Norman Foster is one of the best architects to come out of Britain and has
gained more than 470 awards for his work. Foster is a graduate of the Manchester
University School of Architecture, as well as Yale University’s Masters in
Architecture program. In 1967, he established Foster + Partners, which is the firm
he has worked with ever since. Some of Foster’s most well-known works include
the Beijing Airport, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, along with the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington.

ZAHA HADID, IRAK, 1950-2017

10
Nicknamed 'Queen of the Curve', Zaha Hadid (1950-2017) is undoubtedly one of
the most famous female architects the world has known. She is thanked for her
pioneering vision which helped to transform architecture in the 21st Century. She
received the highest honours from civic, academic and professional institutions
across the globe.Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Hadid studied mathematics at the
American University of Beirut before moving to London to attend the Architectural
Association. Since she has been heralded by the Guggenheim Museum and the
London Design Museum, as well as being named as one of the most powerful
women in the world by Forbes. The Queen made her a Dame Commander of the
Order of the British Empire, and she was named as one of the world's 100 most
influential people in 2010.

TOM WRIGHT, UNITED KINGDOM, 1957

Tom Wright is a British architect. Its best known design is the Burj Al Arab in
Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Born in Croydon, a city in London, United
Kingdom on September 18, 1957, Wright studied at the Russell Royal School
and subsequently at the School of Architecture at Kingston University. Qualified
in 1983, Wright went on to become a director of the architectural practice Lister
Drew Haines Barrow, which was taken in 1991 by Atkins, for whom he has
worked since then.

CONCLUSION:
Above we have listed the best and most famous architects up to
today, from the likes of Antoni Gaudi to Fran Gehry. These are
the people who had the biggest influence on the way to the
buildings we see everyday are constructed, whether it is the
skyscrapers in cities like London and New York, or simply the 11
way residential buildings now look.
