3. Do you agree with following statement? Justify your answer.

“As ATP is our energy currency, we should store lots of ATP to ensure a constant energy
supply”. (7 marks)
 ATP is a high energy molecule with very unstable/weak phosphate bonds
 Not a preferred storage form of energy
 For immediate needs, our body stores energy in the form of phosphocreatine
 The coupling between the ATP-ADP cycle and the creatine-phosphocreatine (Cr-PCr)
system maintain a constant supply of energy in the cell
 Phosphocreatine + ADP <-> creatine + ATP
 Enzyme: creatine kinase
 Our body ultimately stores energy in the form of glycogen and fats/adipose tissue.

4. Janet has been putting on weight the past few weeks and she blames it on her slow
metabolism. She was told that coconut oil, ginger and coffee speeds up metabolism and
wonders if adding these to her diet will help her lose weight.....
Help explain to Janet, separating the myths from the facts! (8 marks)

 Metabolism = all the chemical processes to keep one alive and body system functioning.
These processes require energy.
 The minimum amount of energy one requires for these processes is called basal
metabolism. Basal metabolism rate (BMR) accounts for 40-70% of one’s energy needs,
depending on age and lifestyle.
 One way to determine one’s daily energy needs is using the harris-benedict equation.
Body size, age and gender determine metabolism rate
 Younger people, men and those with more muscle mass have higher metabolic
rates.
 Some medical conditions slow down one’s metabolism – hypothyroidism, cushing’s
syndrome
 More often than not, people gain weight because of overconsumption of calories.
 The evidence behind the claims (coconut oil, ginger, coffee) are not strong. In fact,
adding calorie-dense coconut oil to her diet will lead to further weight gain
 Quick fix diets can cause one to lose muscles – this will slow down metabolism
 Being physically active burns away calories; especially strength training that builds up
muscle mass.
