Mamba Mentality

Kobe Bryant’s tragic death sent shockwaves throughout the world. Since news broke of

the former basketball player’s untimely death, people have been trying to process their feelings

and what Bryant meant to them. We ponder on what will he be remembered for. Bryant

cultivated his own philosophy known as the Mamba Mentality which will be his legacy in this

world. Mamba Mentality is a play on Bryant’s own nickname, “The Black Mamba,” or just

“Mamba.” Bryant gave himself this name after watching Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. In the

film, the mamba snake referred to deadly assassins.

Mamba Mentality is a mindset wherein an individual must be able to constantly try to be

the best version of himself. He described it as “a constant quest to try to better today than you

were yesterday”. Bryant’s imperturbable and invincible character exemplified what Mamba

Mentality is. He obsessed on becoming the best and he was willing to make the sacrifices

necessary to achieve greatness. One can argue that Kobe was rewarded with God-given talents

and natural abilities, but he exceeded all the expectations. He put an absurd amount of work and

dedication into perfecting his craft. Being the first one to show up at practice and fighting

through pain and injuries distinguishes the ordinary from extraordinary. We can say his mindset

worked as his basketball prowess earned him a plethora of basketball achievements that included

5 NBA championships and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award.

However, Mamba Mentality was about more than just basketball. The philosophy is not

mind-blowing as far as philosophy goes, but it is practical and actionable. You don’t have to be

an NBA superstar to actualize it in your own life. You must ponder on what areas in your life

could you apply it to. Are there certain things you’re good at that you could become a master of?

inhibit your pursuit of success? You must set your goals and learn to keep going, to keep

pushing, and to keep fighting when facing adversities in life. That’s the mindset that Kobe is

trying to impart to countless individuals.

The Mamba Movement has inspired more than just pro athletes. Fans everywhere are now

using it as motivation to be great. It’s the ultimate mantra for the competitive spirit. It started

just as a hashtag one day, and it’s grown into something athletes — and even non-athletes —

embrace as a mindset.

It’s tragic that Bryant was taken from this world so young. One of the best ways to honor

the dead, however, is to take the best aspects of their character and integrate them in your own

life, letting the light of them shine through you. That may be the proper way to view a person’s

legacy. It’s the impact on others that continues to exist, long after we leave this body. Though

Bryant is gone, his legacy lives through all those inspired by his dedication to excellence.
