Transfers and Promotions

 Dr Susnata Dey, Dr. Soumen Das, and Dr. Partha Sarathi Ghosh, Assistant Professors and Dr. Asif
Ayaz, Dr. Koustav Mandal, Dr. Bappaditya Sarkar AND Dr. Somnath Biswas, R.M.O. cum Clinical Tutors,
have been transferred to different other institutions on promotions to their next higher posts.
 Dr. Saibal Chakroborty, R.M.O. cum Clinical Tutors, has resigned from the service this year.
 Dr. Soumen Sanfui and Dr. Sarvesh Gupta have resigned from the posts of Senior Residents after
completion of their one-year terms.
 Dr. Rinki Das, Associate Professor, has re-joined the Department after completion of her training and
passing the MCh (Surgical Gastroenterology) from PGI, Chandigarh.

REGULAR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Regular departmental academic schedule includes case discussions, clinical meetings, journal club
meetings, topic seminars, periodic faculty and guest lectures, held 6 days a week. Department conducts
regular Audit meetings on monthly basis. Teachers and students discuss and interact on several topics.
Monthly examinations on theory papers on different topics are held on the last week day of every month.
The average of these examinations is counted towards evaluation in the Annual Examination leading to
awarding of the Medal to the postgraduates of the final year.

Several faculty members were invited to participate in Thyroid Society of India Annual Conference at
Kolkata , November, 2015 where Prof. B. K. Chattopadhyay, Prof. M. L. Saha, Prof. D. K. Sarkar, Dr.
Soumen Das either presented papers or conducted interdisciplinary panel discussions.

Department successfully carried out its responsibilities of executing the 8th Modular course for the
postgraduates of the Association of Surgeons of India by organizing one-day programme on hands on
demonstrations on 11th. December, 2015 focusing on the Oral and Practical part of the Postgraduate
University Examination.

A single day Live operative workshop and CME with the international guest faculty Dr Debashis Ghosh
was arranged. Dr Ghosh performed live oncoplastic surgery followed by lectures.

Several of the faculty members attended the ASICON 2015, the annual conference of the Association of
Surgeons of India held at Gurgaon, Haryana in December, 2015 and Prof. P. K. Bhattacharya presented a
paper on “Approach to a patient with post lap chole biliary fistula”. Prof. D K. Sarkar presented papers on
“Mastectomy steps” and “Breast Conservation/ SLNB” and took PG Master Class on Breast.

Department organized the Surgery Oral and Practical part of the M.B.B.S. Examination successfully in
January, 2015 of the regular batch and the subsequently the Supplementary in May, 2015 under the
chairmanship of Prof. D. K. Sarkar.

Several faculty members along with number of postgraduate students participated in SASICON 2016, the
annual conference of the State Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India held at Jalpaiguri in February,
2016. Prof. B. K. Chattopadhyay presented the prestigious Dr. P. C. Sanyal Memorial oration (“colorectal
anastomotic leaks”) and Prof. M. L. Saha participated as a guest faculty in the live operative workshop
(performed open Lateral Pancreatojejunostomy operation).

Department again successfully carried out its responsibilities of executing the next Modular course for the
postgraduates of the Association of Surgeons of India in July, 2016.

A CME and live workshop was held in August, 2016 in the Departmental Seminar Room in collaboration
with the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, SDLD where Prof. Sailesh Srikhande of Tata Memorial
Hospital, Mumbai performed D2 Gastrectomy at SDLD OT and a continuous interactive session went on
while the operations were being performed. A CME on recent advances on carcinoma stomach were also
discussed by Prof. Srikhande and Dr. Ashwin D‟Souza, also from TMH, Mumbai.

Department organized the annual IPGMER Surgical Oncology meet ONCOSURGE 2016 with live workshop
of laparoscopic oncological operations carried out by several eminent national faculties followed by CME
lectures, panel discussions and post-graduate master classes by the eminent national and local faculties,
held in the month of July, 2016. It was attended by more than 150 delegates. The highlights of the
program were the participation by the national faculty like Dr Puntambeker, Dr Rajkumar and Dr
Chintamani.

Department organized the Skill Course programme of the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India
(AMASI) from 4th to 6th August, 2016 under the able leadership of Prof. M. L. Saha and several faculty
members including Prof. Chattopadhyay, Prof. Saha, Prof. Bhattacharya and Dr. Soumen Das participated
as faculty and delivered course lectures and hands-on training.

Round table discussion on early diagnosis strategy: A joint effort with Bangladesh was another
international event in the department attended by 10 Bangladeshi and 20 West Bengal faculty and saw
an in depth discussion on strategies for early diagnosis of Breast cancer.

Cancer awareness program: Jointly with Disha and members of Bangladesh Breast Association an
evening of awareness was organized with the theme of promoting survivorship campaign in breast
cancer.

Department also organized very successfully the live workshop of the 11th. International Congress of
Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASICON 2016) from 18th. to 20th. November, 2016
again under the able leadership of Prof. M. L. Saha and assisted by other faculty members, where from
the very basic to very high-end laparoscopic surgeries were performed by several national faculty
including the living legend Prof. C. Palanivelu from Coimbatore.

As a path breaking initiative, the Department organized a competitive programme on poster presentation
regarding awareness amongst our womenfolk regarding early detection of breast carcinoma amongst the
undergraduates and pupil nurses of the institution on the very auspicious occasion of cancer awareness
program which was presided over by the honorable minister-in-charge. Winners and runners up were
handsomely awarded.

The department collaborates with the Endocrinology Department to run a „Diabetic Foot‟ clinic and runs a
dedicated Endocrine and Metabolic Clinic (at our OPD on Saturdays) and Breast Clinic (at Shambhunath
Pandit Hospital on Saturdays). Department plans to start a dedicated Oncosurgery Unit for the cancer
victims very soon.

Prof. B. K. Chattopadhyay
• Nominated as the Secretary of the Board of Studies in Surgery of the West Bengal University of
Health Sciences, and is responsible for the formulation of policies regarding syllabus, dissertation,
examination, and evaluation in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the University.
• Supervisor and adjudicator of different Ph. D Thesis work of the students of Calcutta University.
• Was invited to participate in Thyroid Society of India Annual Conference at Kolkata, 2015 where the
lecture on “History of Thyroid Surgery” was delivered and was much acclaimed by the faculties and
the postgraduate students alike.
• Attended the SASICON 2016, the annual conference of the West Bengal Chapter of the Association of
surgeons of India held at Jalpaiguri in February 2016 and delivered the prestigious Dr. P. C. Sanyal
Memorial Oration on “Colorectal anastomotic leaks.”
Participated as a Faculty in FIAGES, Kolkata (Fellowship of Indian Association of Gastro Intestinal
Endosurgeons) held in June, 2016 at Medical College, Kolkata and participated as a faculty in a panel
discussion on “ Post Lap Cholecystectomy Bile Duct Injury” along with other national faculties.
• Participated in the 44th. Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India Skill Course programme
held at I.P.G.M.E.&R., Kolkata in August, 2016 along with other faculty members of the Dept. of
Surgery and delivered Faculty lecture on “Techniques and complications of access”.
• Attended the annual state CME of the Association of Surgeons of India – SASICME, 2016 organized by
College of Medicine and Sagar Dutta Hospital in the month of September and participated as a faculty
for Undergraduate clinical surgery class with a video presentation of “Examination of a thyroid
swelling” and chaired several sessions. Conducted the master class teaching programme for the
postgraduates along with other faculty members.
• Was associated with the organization of the Live Workshop held at I.P.G.M.E. &.R and S.S.K.M.
Hospital from 18.11.2016 to 20.11.2016.on the occasion of the 11th. International Congress of the
Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASICON2016) as Head of the Department and
participated in the conference as a faculty member and acted as a panelist in a special session of
“case capsules” along with several other national faculties.
• Guided thesis work for postgraduate students, acted as chairman for the Oral-Practical part of M.S.
Examination 2016 at the IPGMER Center, acted as adjudicator for large number of articles for the
Indian Journal of Surgery, JIMA and several other journals.

Prof. Makhan Lal Saha


• Elected uncontested as Governing council member of The Association of Surgeons of India for the
period from 2016-18.
• Working as principal investigator of multicentre trauma study project TRITCO.
• Attended SCOPE course as a faculty in the month of February 2016 organized by Delhi chapter of
ASI.
• Attended annual conference of Association of surgeons of India( WB chapter) held at Jalpaiguri in
February 2016.Performed a Pancreatico jejunostomy operation in live operative workshop held during
SASICON2016.
• Attended AMASI skill course held at Dhaka as a faculty from 27.3.2016 to 30.3.2016
• Participated at world health day programme organized by Liver foundation on 7th. April 2016 held at
CMOH office Berhampur and delivered a lecture on “ Primary management of trauma victim”.
• Attended as a faculty in 43rd AMASI skill course held at Agra in the month of July.
• Attended as a faculty in SCOPE organized by ASI Delhi chapter in the month of August 2016.
• Organized 44th. AMASI skill course along with other faculty members of Dept. of Surgery
I.P.G.M.E.&R., Kolkata. 200 surgeons and gynecologist participated in the skill course and 160 took
FMAS examination held at the end of the course.
• Attended SASICME organized by College of Medicine and Sagar Dutta Hospital in the month of
September. Participated as a faculty for Undergraduate clinical surgery class. Delivered “Dr.Subodh
Chandra Dutta Memorial Oration” on Evolution of thyroid surgery with emphasis on lateral horizontal
thyroidectomy.
• Attended Eastern Zonal Critical Care Conference (EZCCCON 2016) held at Siliguri in October 2016 as
a faculty and delivered a lecture on” Abdominal compartment syndrome”
• Worked as Chairman of the workshop committee in the annual conference of Association of Minimal
Access Surgeons of India (AMASICON2016). The live workshop was held at
I.P.G.M.E.&.R/S.S.K.M.Hospital from 18.11.2016 to 20.11.2016.

Other patient interface related information

Follow up clinics are also run for each unit on different days. The department collaborates with the
Endocrinology Department to run a „Diabetic Foot‟ clinic and runs a dedicated Endocrine and Metabolic (at
our OPD on Saturdays) and Breast Clinic (at Shambhu Nath Pandit Hospital on Saturdays). Department
plans to start a dedicated Oncosurgery Unit for cancer patients very soon.
