Shreeraj Industries: Painting

The document provides painting procedures for Shreeraj Industries. It outlines requirements for paint selection, application, surface preparation, and inspection. Key points include using paints that are resistant to weathering and ultraviolet rays, applying primer and two coats of aliphatic polyurethane paint, allowing adequate drying time between coats, and ensuring the total dry film thickness is between 125-300 microns. Painting should only be done under suitable environmental conditions and the work is to be inspected for uniformity, thickness, and defects.

Painting Procedure MKT/EXP/AAQ/80

1. Scope:
This procedure covers the minimum requirements for selection of Top coating system and materials,
their application applied to coating surface.

2. Products:

2.1 Paint
)> All paint materials shall be stored in conditions and at temperature recommended by the
manufacturer.
)> No paint shall be used beyond its shelf life. (Recommended by the manufacturer).
)> Any paint, which has gelled or settled during storage, shall not be used.
)> All paint materials shall be supplied to the work site in their original unopened and clearly
identifiable containers.
)> All paint materials should have resistance against chlorine and weathering, ultraviolet rays.
>- Type: 2 Compound Aliphatic Polyurethane (Resin and Cure)
Standard colours:

)> PO Red - for Valves

)> In addition, any Standard Colours specified by the customer requirements

2.2 Equipment
The equipment will includes,

)> Spray equipment shall be of a type approved by the paint manufacturer for each type of paint used.
)> Paint brushes of good quality, wire brushes, chipping hammer, scrapper, and abrasive cleaning
equipment.
)> Personal safety equipment including goggles, masks, screen, and other protective equipment used
in association with paint spraying.
)> Test equipment including temperature, viscosity-measuring devices, film thickness gauges shall be
_ used in painting booth.

2.3 Painting Booth:

::i> Components hung on conveyor are brought inside booth area manually and painting is done.
)> While painting, the paint laden air drawn by the blower from the booth front travels through the
primary metallic filters and most of the over sprayed paint is collected in this filter by virtue of its
zigzag design and balanced paint particles down to 1 O microns by the Non-Woven fabric provided
after the primary filter and clean air is let into the atmosphere.
)> During the painting, the air inside the booth is continuously exhausted.

2.4 BoothCleaning:
Primary metallic filter is to be cleaned once in every two months and grease to be applied before re•
fixing them. Non-Woven fabric filter cannot be cleaned and if found clogged to be replaced as per the
maintenance schedule recommendations.

3. Surface Preparation and Cleaning

>- All rough edge cuts and welds, weld spatters, indentations, all surfaces and protrusions must be
grounded to smooth out the contour before the surface is prepared for painting.
>- Dirt, rust, mill scale are removed and the metal surface prepared by hand chipping, scrapping or wire
brushing, or preferably where possible power hand tools such as power and grinders to achieve
the standard cleaned surface.
>- Mechanism of parts, which are exposed, e.g. threaded rods, or shafts used for adjustment or settings,
and mechanical linkages, shall be suitably masked or protected from top coating insofar as
the topcoat would interfere or restrict their operation or function.
>- On completion of the surface preparation, all dust and other foreign materials shall be removed and
Primer paint coat applied before contamination of flash rusting occur.
>- Surfaces shall be prepared by grit blasting.

4. Application of Paint

4.1 Mixing:
>- Paints (usually compound A- Resin) shall be mixed with respective Hardeners (compound B - Cure)
until the solids are distributed equally throughout the container. Mixing shall be done as per
recommendations by the manufacturer.
>- After thoroughly mixing, the correct viscosity of the paint shall be measuring with an approved flow
cup.
>- The mixed paint shall not be used on expiry of its "pot life".
>- The mixed paint shall colour match with other in the prepared paints of same coat. Paints visually
,. showing deterioration such as setting, separations, gelling, etc. shall be discarded.
>- Paint shall not be mixed or held in solution with air bubbles.
>- If a skin has formed in the container, it shall be cut and removed. If the skin is thicker than 1 mm,
the paint shall not be used.
>- Product with unlimited pot life or which do not alter on standing may be mixed at any time; however,
if they have set, they must be mixed immediately before use. Paint shall not be kept in the
spray equipment pots overnight, but shall be put back into a container and re-mixed before
re-use. Containers must be marked with the involved paint's pot-life.

4.2 Thinning:
)::- No thinners are to be added unless necessary for proper applications.
> Thinning must never exceed pain manufacturer recommendations.
> Thinners used must be those suggested by the manufacturer.
> Thinners shall be used only if the viscosity of paint mixer is low.
> Thinner must be added under the guidance of a specialist who if thoroughly familiar with the quantity
and type of the added thinner.

4.3 Paint Applications:

4.3.1 Painting shall not be applied to surfaces;
> During rain, snow, fog or when dust is in suspension is in the air, when wind velocity exceeds 7
m/s.
> When surface temperature is less than 3°C above the surrounding airs dew point.
> When relative humidity is greater than 85%.
4.3.2 Skilled craftsman fully experienced in the application of sophisticated industrial paints shall
carry out painting.
4.3.3 Apply paint with pneumatic spray gun, which shall be capable of spraying the paint properly. It
shall be fitted with pressure indicators and regulators adapted to service.
Pressure on the product in the spray pot and air in the gun shall be adjusted to obtain optimum
atomisation. Pressure on the product in the pot shall be set, if necessary, to accommodate gun
height with respective to the can height. Air pressure in the gun (Keep an air inlet pressure of 3 to
5 bars at the spray gun (Trigger On)) shall be high enough to atomise paint without forming
excessive mist or causing excessive evaporation of solvent

• All colours used shall comply with these standards. Manufacturer colour names or reference
numbers not be used as reference

~
5. Drying Times:
> Each coat of paint shall be allowed to dry thoroughly in accordance with the Paint manufacturer
instructions before the next coat is applied.
> Drying times are highly depends on local conditions.
> No drier shall be added to paint.
> Minimum dry (Touch dry) time for standard pains 2 to 3 hours, but it depends on paint I Paint
manufacturer recommendations.

6. Inspection:

6.1 Thickness Check

)> Wet and Dry paint thickness shall be measured employing appropriate instruments.
)> The dry film thickness given in this specification shall be strictly adhere to and shall be measured.
)> The maximum tolerance on dry film thickness for each coat shall be in accordance with
recommendations of the paint manufacturer, which once established shall not be exceeded.

6.2 Visual Inspection:

)> Each coat shall be visually inspected. The dry film shall be uniform on appearance over the entire
surface and shall not contain, sags, drips, inclusions excessive peel orange effect.
)> Any defect or damage that may occur shall be repaired before the application of further coat.

7. Acceptance:
)> Coat of epoxy Prime shall be maintained as 85-125 microns dry film thickness.
)> Total Dry film thickness after final paint coating shall be maintained between 125 -200 microns
for painting system-1 and 200 - 300 for Painting System -II
)> Significant surface shall show no evidence of excessive particles or hydrocarbon films when visually
or by wipe test. An excessive amount is that quantity which would,
o Migrate to other points in the system.
o Interface with operation of moving parts.
o Damage critical surface.

8. Paint Specifications:
