Eliminator™ Full-Flow/Centrifuge Bypass (Self-Cleaning) Filtration System

Cummins has offered the Eliminator™ oil filter as a factory supplied option since 1997. The Eliminator™ filter is
a combination of the Alfa Laval Moatti automatic, self-cleaning filter and disc stack centrifuge housed in a single
unit which is engine mounted.

Requirements:

• Service full flow filter at engine overhaul

• Do not use Fleetguard Cone Stack as a replacement element

Recommendations:

• Reference engine Operation and Maintenance Manual for Eliminator™ centrifuge service intervals. This
manual can be found at Cummins Quick Serve Online.

The unique features and advantages of the Eliminator™ filter include:

• The system bolts directly to the engine block (ie. same location as the standard lube filter head)
• Totally sealed full-flow system to reduce the possibility of contamination/dirt
• 300 psig Filter element burst pressure
• Continuous and automatic back-flushing system driven via filtered oil (no external power sources
required)
• Reduces filter service/maintenance cost and time, thus increasing productivity
• Reduces disposal costs
• Eliminates spin-on full-flow and by-pass flow disposable filters

Eliminator™ Specifications

Any of the recommended oils discussed in the Cummins Operation and Maintenance manual for all High Horse
Power Industrial engines can be used with the Eliminator™. The engine mounted Eliminator™ used on the
KV/QSKV products is capable of operating at 30 deg in all directions, while the QSK19 version is capable of
operating at 45 deg in all directions. The dry weights of the filtration system for the different engine families are
as follows:

Table 1: Eliminator™ Weight

Engine Family Eliminator™ Weight

QSK 19 28.5 kg (contains 10 elements)

K 38/50, QSK 38/50 110 kg (contains 24 elements)

QSK 45 115 kg (contains 24 elements)

QSK 60 118 kg (contains 30 elements)

QSK78 120 kg (contains 34 elements)

The QSK19 uses a Fleetguard disposable centrifuge, which is a one piece plastic unit. The QSK 78 uses a
slightly different centrifuge than the other KV/QSKV engine platforms, having larger nozzle diameters. All
KV/QSKV Eliminator™ filters operate with 18 to 20 liters of oil depending on the Eliminator™ size. The QSK19
Eliminator™ filter operates with 7.6 liters of oil. The centrifuge capacity on all platforms is 1.0 liter [0.26 gallons],
making the total capacity of the Eliminator™ during engine operation 19 to 21 liters and 8.7 liters of oil for the
KV/QSKV and QSK19 products respectively.

Eliminator™ Full-Flow Operating Principle

The principle operation of the Eliminator™ Filter System is: unfiltered oil enters the full-flow filter and passes
across the filter element. These elements consist of a series of stacked discs with triple wire mesh elements for
strength and durability. Solids are collected on the filter element surface and the filtered oil is passed on into the
engine. 95% of the total flow is directed into the engine. The remaining 5% backflushes the full-flow elements
then splits into two halves with one half passing through the centrifuge before returning to the sump and the
other half returning directly to the sump.

Figure 4: QSK 19 Eliminator™ Operation

The full-flow system is a continuous “self-cleaning” system where the stacked discs are back-flushed to remove
the solids collected on the wire mesh. Powered by a small flow of filtered oil, the hydraulic motor, which is
located within the filter housing, rotates a distributor which directs the backflushed oil flow to the filter sector
being backflushed. Each of the disc type filter elements has 12 sectors for the KV/QSKV platforms and 16
sectors for the QSK19 platform. The distributor rotates in a continuous step function, cleaning one sector at a
time, and performs one complete cleaning (rotation) of all sectors every 1 to 2 minutes for the KV/QSKV
products and every 2 to 3 minutes for the QSK19. Since the full-flow system is self-cleaning, it does not require
servicing until engine overhaul.

Eliminator™ Centrifuge Bypass Operating Principle

Back-flushed oil passing into the centrifuge is fed through the center of the centrifuge, passes into the centrifuge
bowl and is separated into its various phases by centrifugal force. Heavier solids are forced to the periphery of
the bowl, where they collect on a replaceable liner with clean oil draining into the engine sump. The speed and
efficiency with which the phases are separated is enhanced by the insertion of a closely spaced disc stack
within the bowl. Like the full-flow filter, the centrifuge bypass is powered by the flow of oil as is exits the
centrifuge. Therefore, no external power sources are required for the Eliminator™ filter.

At every service interval, or depending on the duty cycle of the application when the centrifuge bowl is full (1.0
liter [0.26 gallons]), the collected solids are removed by removing the centrifuge hood, lifting off the bowl and
removing the liner with the collected solids.
The KV/QSKV Eliminator™ must be drained during each oil change. Please see oil drain location in Figure 3
above. Note that the QSK19 does not have a drain plug. It is set up to drain back to the sump at engine shut
down. For additional reference, see the appropriate engine Service Manual on Quick Serve Online.

Option Compatibility
On the K38 products, in order to accommodate the Eliminator™ as an upfit kit, a single bank breather system on
the right bank is required. CENSE™ is available for use with Eliminator™. Eliminator™ also requires the dual
STC valve and plumbing to be relocated and rerouted, respectively.

An aftermarket Eliminator™ upfit kit is also available for the QST30.
