The document discusses using a newspaper advertisement image as a prompt for classroom discussion on topics like corruption, the power of advertisements, and the role of newspapers in exposing politicians. It suggests having students describe what they see in the image, which could lead to discussions where different political views are expressed. The teacher would need to guide the discussion and set ground rules to prevent any students from hijacking the conversation. Using this prompt could help improve students' speaking skills through an engaging debate on a subject most find interesting. Some vocabulary from the ad would need explaining to fully understand its message.

PICTURE COMPOSITION

I am not really sure how I came across this picture that displays a hoarding from a leading
newspaper in India – ‘The Hindu’. But I found the power of advertisements really playing on
everyone’s mind – given the state of corruption in the Indian bureaucracy. It was a message of
Whatsapp, as far as I remember, and it really brought a smile on my face. I immediately
forwarded this to my friends and colleagues who I think really liked it. I believe this could be a
great prompt to let students speak about the influence of newspapers and/or about the power of
advertisements.

•       Aims or objectives

With the use of this picture, teachers can take up various issues in the classroom – corruption,
power of advertisements, more specifically newspapers that help expose elite politicians who
mar the political scenario by being dishonest, letting students bring their own impressions about
their local politicians maybe. In my case, as I described earlier, was viral message or viral
Whatsapp forwards. Through this students can be made to react or speak up and describe what
they see in the picture using their own words.

•       Interaction
This discussion can become really touchy as a lot of students might be inclined to support one
political party or the other. So the teacher has to play his/her role in not letting any rogue element
take the discussion away from the main topic. At the same time, teacher can let the students
form some ground rules before even bringing up the topic in the classroom. The teacher may
also like to guide students who are slow in catching the ‘punch’ intended in the powerful
advertisement.

•       Skills or language focus

Through this primarily the speaking – fluency and content development – can be enhanced as a
lot of students might be interested in discussing politics. Politics is a subject that almost everyone
would like to talk about so this can even be used as a debate topic to make the students in the
class more interested in the topic of the discussion. A lot of times students would have difficulty
understanding the meaning of certain words in the advertisement, but the teacher can provide
support.

•       Support needed (useful phrases, a model, etc.)

Some vocabulary words can be discussed with students like ‘sarcasm’, ‘convoy’, ‘inflation’,
‘billboards’ in order to let the students know the significance of the piece of work.
