Activity 1
With your partner discuss what the following words and phrases mean.

What do the ‘spell’ based words and phrases in the following sentences mean?

1. How do you spell your surname?


2. The wicked witch cast a spell on the prince which turned him into a frog.
3. Janet went to stay with her mother for a spell when her marriage broke down.
4. Does your computer have a spellchecker?
5. When I was at school we had a spelling bee every Monday morning.
6. ‘Did you enjoy your English lesson?’ ‘Oh yes, it was absolutely spellbinding!’

Activity 3
Use the following phrases in the complete form to complete the sentences below.

3. How popular are magic shows or TV programmes in your country?
4. Have you ever seen a magic show?
5. What was your favourite magic story as a child, and why?
6. Why are magic stories so popular with children?
7. Did you use to believe in magic when you were a child? When and why did you stop?
8. How do you define magic? For example, do you think it includes phenomena such as telepathy, miracles
or luck, etc? Why/not?
9. Do you believe in magic? Why/not?
