Routing

The document discusses standards organizations and their roles. It focuses on the IEEE, IETF, ISO, ANSI, and NIST. The IEEE develops networking standards to ensure interoperability between vendors. The IETF develops internet protocols and standards through working groups and RFC publications. ISO issues over 12,000 international standards covering quality, design, and interconnectivity. ANSI provides accreditation for standards organizations. The document argues that a federal body like NIST is needed to promote innovation, economic security, and public safety through technology standards.

STANDARDS 1

STANADARDS FOR ORGANIZATIONS

STANDARDS 2

Assignment 1: Standards Research

Write a fully developed paper in which you:

1. Select one of the working groups in the IETF or IEEE and briefly summarize what this

group is working on.

Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) carries out the real implementation of new standards in

the industry and protocols for Internet. When new standard has to be prepared, the working

committee members prepare a draft version of the document which is available in the online

directory of IETF. The document is available online for six months and it is open for reviews and

comments by interested parties. With in this period, the Internet Engineering Steering Group

(IESG) may approve publication of draft as RFC. Request for Comment is recognized as

standard. If draft is not passed as RFC it is removed from the directory. Later, working

committee can make modifications of the draft. The RFC are passed with approval of IESG and

IETF is responsible for RFC. For every standard in the internet community there is a RFC. RFC

are the notes provided for understanding and implementation of the standards. A document in the

RFC is related specifically to the topic related to the communication in the computer world and it

is pertinent to a report or specification of a standard. The IETF membership is open to all

interested parties willing to make contribution to the development of standards (Stallings,2009).

The IETF areas include General, Applications, Internet, Operations and management, Routing,

Security and Transport.

STANDARDS 3

2. Justify the need of the IEEE 802 standard used in networking.

IEEE 802 is the standard for development of Local Area Network to ensure availability at

low cost interface. The rationale of IEEE 802 standard is to ensure that the equipment

available from a variety of different vendors can intercommunicate. IEEE 802 standards

are revised and extended standards are added to the list which are adopted by

International organization for standards (ISO). The IEEE 802 standards is based on the

concept that the local networks are highly complex and it should be broken into smaller

subtasks. On the other hand, it is not possible to have a single standard to cover all the

requirements of LAN. The IEEE family adopted and developed many standards to

propose various topologies and transmission media for all the requirements.

The IEEE 802.1, 802.3, 802.11, 802.15, 802.16,802.17,802.18,802.19, 802.20 etc.

3. Evaluate the three standard organizations including IEEE, ISO, and ANSI to determine

the most important for communication technology.

IEEE is the responsible for developing the standards to ease the implementation of complex

Local Area networks and to ensure the devices of different vendors can intercommunicate. The

rationale of IEEE 802 standard is to ensure that the equipment available from a variety of

different vendors can intercommunicate. IEEE 802 standards are revised and extended standards

are added to the list which are adopted by International organization for standards (ISO).

American National Standard Institute (ANSI) provides accreditation to the standards developed

by representatives of standard organizations. The standards aimed to ensure that performance of

products is consistent and everyone uses same definition and terms and same testing methods are

used to test the products. The ANSI provides accreditation to the organizations developing

standards, government agencies etc. (Douglas, Verma, Harvath, Rodegrs, n.d))

STANDARDS 4

International Organization for Standardization is a non-government organization. It was

established in 1947. The ISO 9000 family of standards for management of quality of products.

For example, The ISO standard defines the precise design and size and the cable for the wire for

use in the electronic circuits. It ensures that all follow the same guidelines and compliance is

often made mandatory by many countries. The mission and vision of ISO is to promote the

development of standards and activities related to the standards to facilitate the international

exchange of goods and services in the era of globalization. ISO also maintains an online

catalogue of standards for searching the international standards (University of Washington

Libraries,2020) ISO u=has issued more than 12,000 standards in wide areas. ISO deals with the

Open System Interconnection architecture and standards for the seven layers of OSI model. The

seven layers of OSI model include Application, Presentation, session, Transport, Network,

datalink and Physical layer.

4. Take a position on the need for a federal regulating body of standards such as NIST.

Include supporting evidence to justify your opinion.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a non-regulatory federal agency

established in 1901 to promote US innovation and industrial competition by setting

benchmark for performance and standard in technology to enhance economic security and

improve the quality of life of people. NIST outlines the guidelines to protect government

data. In today’s world, the globalization standards have mode the business operations

interconnected across geographical boundaries. The need for standard has increased to

ensure the safety and security measures are implemented by all organizations uniformly.

The organizations like NIST ensure that the organizations follow the same set of rules to

comply and work for security across different domains for safety of consumers.
