SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL OF MARBEL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

Teenage pregnancy is a situation which involves female adolescents. A

teenage female is a female between 13 to19 in age. But sometimes preteen’s people
under 13 can become pregnant as well. The fact that teenagers become pregnant is
related to many factors. These are related to the specific situation of the teenager, and
the group that she interacts with. The rate of teenage pregnancy vary from country to
country and are related to differences of sexual activities, the general sex education
being provided and contraceptives being available. Social matters also play a role:
often, the teenager grew up in poverty. She also often has a lower level of general
Education. And it also one of the reasons why there are many teens who are now
pregnant it is because of technology that are popular in our modern days where they
can easily connect in harmonious and drastic sites, because nowadays teens are so
adventurous and love to discover a new things that are not suitable in their age.
Here in the Philippines, we believe in the saying of our national hero Dr.
Jose Rizal that “Youth is the hope of our mother land”. And their hand lies the future
generation to follow. But as we see from the situation nowadays, what we are expecting
from the youth is contrary in the saying. Teenagers are prone to pregnancy. Almost
every year there is a rapid increase on the number of pregnant youths. One of the major
causes of this problem is that the generation nowadays grew up in a broken family. The
parents either the father or the mother chose to leave their children’s behind because of
the fact that they cannot handle their obligations and provide the needs of their
children’s or even a third party. And also the influence of other people they might teach
other teens to do things that might fallen into a situation where they could be harm.
In relation to this problem the government is now working on the Reproductive health
Bill RH Bill as one of the most effective solution not only to the teenagers but also to the
increasing population of our country.

Review related literature

Nowadays teens are engage in different activities trying to pursue their

wants for them to satisfy their pleasure. Adolescence is a stage where teenagers adjust
in their physical and emotional changes in life (Lerner & Steinberg, 2004). Teenagers
prefer to go with their peers rather than with their parents due to strong peer pressure.
Early adolescence also represent the period of sexual maturation.
Teenage pregnancy is not like any other issue there in the whole world although it
seems to be a common concern, it does not seem to bother people that much. Not until
they are personally affected by the issue or until they finally realized that it had been
increasing in number of affected people that it slowly reached an abnormal stage or the
point that it affected too many lives already and too many aspects of living. Teenage
pregnancy is mostly unplanned, and as a result, people react to the experience
differently. The teenager has to come to terms with the unexpected demands of being
an adult, and in some cases, she may also have to deal with disapproval and

dissatisfaction shown by significant others like parents and relatives (Clemens,

2002).According to Macleod and Durrheim (2003), teenage pregnancy as a social
problem that leads to the disruption of schooling; poor obstetric outcomes, inadequate
mothering; poor child outcomes; relationship difficulties with relatives, partners and
peers; and demographic concerns about increasing population numbers. In major
cases, teenage mothers are not in a position to go back to school after delivery as they
are forced to look after their children. In some cases, these young mothers’ physical
health conditions do not make it conducive for them to go back to school. While some
young women may be prevented from going back to school as a result of these factors,
De Jang (2001) found that there are some cases of teenagers who may use their
pregnant status to deliberately escape the demands of high school education.
Depression is one of the problems that results to teenage pregnancy of the women.
According to the psychodynamic theory, depression is presented as a disorder that can
be linked to real or imagined object loss (Gee and Rhodes 2003). According to Giddens
(2001:23), cultural factors refer to culture as the way of life of the members of a society,
or of groups within a society
