License Setup Guide
Note: The images, version numbers and products depicted in this Quick Start Guide may not be up-to-
date, but the general procedures remain correct.

There are two options for licensing Bentley applications:

 Standalone Workstations. Requires an .XML license file to be imported into the License
Management Tool in order to license installed applications. The .XML file is checked out against
a Bentley-hosted or user-deployed SELECTserver account.
 Networked Workstations. Connected temporarily/permanently to a Bentley-hosted or user-
deployed server on a network. While connected, licenses can be checked in/out as required from
a pool of available licenses on the contract.
All license management questions/modifications are handled by the Bentley License Team and Account
Managers (NOT the AutoPIPE Technical Support Group). Your Account Manager can also assist with
application pricing.

SELECT License – Standalone Workstations (Node Locked)

Overview
An internet/network connection is not required to authenticate the AutoPIPE license. In order to use the
application, a valid SELECT license file (.XML) is required with the AutoPIPE license options checked out
for an extended period of time. A standalone license is locked to a specific computer and cannot be moved.
If the license needs to be moved, contact the party that provided the .XML file for an updated file.

Instructions
1. Install AutoPIPE following the procedures provided.
2. Acquire a valid Bentley SELECT license file (.XML) from your Bentley on-site Administrator,
hosted server, deployed server, Bentley License Team, or Account Manager. Prior to receiving
an .XML file, the user may need to provide a computer name where the application is to be
installed.
3. Copy the license file on your hard disk by selecting AutoPIPE > License Management Tool
or start AutoPIPE and select the License Management Tool toolbar icon.
4. The first time this command is issued, a warning message may display. Press OK.
5. The License Management Tool dialog displays. Select the License Checkout tab, then select File >

Licensing Questions and Answers

Licensing Questions and Answers

What is Product Activation?
Product activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use. V8i Edition
applications are equipped, by default, with six behavioral states – Trial, Activated, Offline,
Crippled/Disabled, Expired and Demo/Deactivated.
The Trial period begins with installation and ends after the trial period license has expired or
with Activation, whichever comes first. During the Trial period, most applications run in
full-functioning mode, with no limitations applied to their activated state.
Initially all applications start in Trial mode. It occurs if logs have never been transmitted or
logs have been transmitted but no license is available and the product has been used for less
than 15 days. Once a product has been activated, it can never enter Trial mode again. Once
the 15 days trial has expired, it cannot be restarted.
AutoPIPE Nuclear edition does not have a trial period available.
An application is activated when it is licensed, which is most commonly achieved by
successfully transmitting logs to the server and having a valid license on the server if logs
have been successfully transmitted within the past 24 hours. Once activated, a product can
never go back to Trial.
Offline state indicated that the application wasn’t able to successfully transmit logs to the
server on the last attempt. Application can only reach at this state if product has been
successfully activated once. Application will stay in this state until logs are successfully
transmitted to the server, at which point it will return to an Activated state, or the client
hasn’t been able to connect to the server in the required amount of time (15 days) at which
point it will move to the Crippled/Disabled state.
Crippled/Disabled state Indicates that the application hasn’t connected to the
SELECTserver within the required time (15 days). Application will stay in this state until
logs are successfully transmitted to the server, at which point it will return to an Activated
state.
Expired state indicates that the application has never been activated and the trial duration
has been exceeded. Application can only enter this state if the product has never been
activated. Application can only exit this state to an activated state if a valid license is found
on the SELECTserver and logs are successfully transmitted.
An application will reach its Deactivated state only when the Trial period has lapsed and the
product has not been activated. In its Deactivated state, an application generally runs for a
short period of time and then stops e.g. Microstation. However applications like AutoPIPE
run in a DEMO mode (20 node limit).
Do node locked licenses have to check into the Bentley hosted licensing server every 30
days?
No. Non-SELECT, permanent licenses are essentially checked-out licenses tied to a
particular machine name and carry an indefinite term.

Licensing Questions and Answers

What is a Pooled License?

A pooled license is a “floating” license, centrally managed by SELECTserver. A desktop
application can draw its license from a SELECTserver pool of licenses located at the
SELECT site. A pooled license is not permanently tied to an individual computer. This
license type is available for MicroStation-based and stand-alone (non-MicroStation)
applications. A pooled license is the most common type of license among SELECT
accounts and is a major benefit of Bentley SELECT. Pooled licenses have a term that
coincides with the renewal date of the SELECT Agreement.
How does it work if we have 21 licenses and 30 users?
Note: The pooled behavior works essentially the same as it does now. You can have
apps installed on as many machines as you wish and you have a "usage count" in
the license file (called a "Site" on SELECT server). There's a slight difference in
the "handshake" between the client and the license server, though, in the new
SELECT Server (SS). In your existing SS, the handshake is based on a license
request from the client application and a corresponding license grant by the
server. If successful, the client will emit a "heartbeat" as long as the session is
open. This is how SS determines that the license is still in use and how it
calculates and records the session time ("usage"). The problem with this model is
that it requires this real-time connection to the license server and puts it in a
precarious, mission-critical position. If this connection is broken or not available,
users can still run their applications up to 15 days offline period. The client runs
the application and records usage locally. When a daily connection is made with
SS, the client posts its own usage log, essentially saying "this is what I used",
including the app, version, and duration (Usages are tracked by machineID on an
hourly basis).

Note: The license can be checked out to the client for up to 90 days or longer using the
License Management Tool.

Why do I need SELECTserver?

SELECTserver is the exclusive enabler of several incremental SELECT licensing benefits,
including the pooling of desktop licenses.
Does my SELECTserver need to be connected to the Internet?
Yes, we recommend that SELECTserver Edition has access to the Internet. This will make
routine transactions, like transmitting usage reports and downloading updated license files,
much more convenient. All transactions are performed under HTTPS protocol, so no
proprietary information will be compromised.
If a SELECTserver cannot maintain an Internet connection, it should be connected within
15 days offline duration.
What happens to my checked-out license if I lose my laptop?
SELECTserver admin pages provide a way to backup checked-out licenses, so they can be
retrieved and copied back to the client machine if necessary. In extreme cases, the System
Administrator can revoke a checked-out license and return it to the pool.

Licensing Questions and Answers

What is the SELECTserver Gateway?

SELECTserver can manage V8i Edition products and pre-XM applications, such as
MicroStation V8 2004 Edition or MicroStation/J. For the latter, SELECTserver provides a
“gateway” as a proxy for the current SELECTserver. It allows pre-V8i applications to
communicate with the new SELECTserver. In fact, SELECTserver Edition can extend
several benefits of the new system to existing applications, including the thirty-day evaluation
mode, extended periods for checked out licenses, and the reliability of a system built on
standard Web-based server technology.
Will my SELECTserver operate in a proxy server environment?
Yes, SELECTserver will work in a proxy server environment in several ways. First, V8i
applications will be able to communicate to SELECTserver via a proxy server.
SELECTservers will also be able to communicate with Bentley.com Web services via a
proxy server. Finally, SELECTserver Gateway will be able to communicate with
SELECTservers via proxy servers.
Can I obtain a fail-over license to prevent against catastrophe?
There will be no need to replace redundant licenses that have been issued for the purposes
of fail-over or redundancy. SELECTserver Edition is built on standard Microsoft
technologies that are well-suited for clustering or other techniques used to safeguard
application servers. In addition, SELECTserver is no longer a real-time license server, so if a
connection is lost, licensed applications are still able to run in full-functioning model.
How is pooled usage defined?
SELECT subscriber entitlement of pooled usage of Bentley desktop applications is defined
in the Bentley SELECT Agreement (2004). SELECTserver reports usage based on 1-hour
intervals.
What if I don’t want to manage my own licenses?
Bentley will offer a hosted license service, based primarily on SELECTserver Edition and
offering essentially the same services that a deployed SELECTserver offers.
I have lost my Network Server connection, can I still run the program if I have not checked out a
license?
SELECTserver is no longer a real-time license server, so if a connection is lost, trust licensed
applications are still able to run in full-functioning mode. If the connection was lost while
you were using the application, you have a 15 days offline grace period to run the
application.
I encounter an error when attempting to install a localized version of AutoPIPE in my language.
What do I do?
As a trouble-shooting step, attempt to install the English version of AutoPIPE. This will
help our technical support team determine whether the problem affects all localizations of
AutoPIPE or a specific localized version only. Be sure to share the results of this test when
requesting support.
