The qualitative research article talks about a study of emotion and sport performance and
extends the understanding of emotional dimensions in sport. The study aims to uncover various
relationships between social factors and affective states evident within the athletes’ account,
analyses the difference of the 3 respondents’ approach in accordance to their emotion towards
sport and to highlight the influence of qualitative method on research findings.
It is a longitudinal case study of emotion and sports performance. The researchers have
used an initial interview and a follow-up interview which were conducted as soon as possible
after each competition. Then, interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed within the
context of the study emphasis on emotions and performance.
Overall in this article, the researchers have sought to describe and understand the
perspectives of James, an athlete, and to actively instigate a reflective process in terms of the
future of qualitative research in sport psychology also because there has been calls for more
longitudinal case study work with elite athletes in order to identify the factors which determine
individual differences in zones of optimal functioning and the ways in which these differences
effect athletic performance (GOULD et al., 1992; GOULD & TUFFEY, 1996; HARDY et al.,
1996; STREAN, 1998).
