Firstly, television cannot replace books as learning materials owing to the fact that
children often misuse television in the disappearance of parents. For instance,
educative programs are less attractive than the cartoon shows and other programs
children prefer to watch. While there are lots of educative and suitable programs, it
is not unusual that a child would prefer to watch programs that entertain more than
educating.
Another reason television is not as suitable as a book because when children learn
through television then their focus will be on audio-visual presentation, not in
learning. Whereas if they follow books then they focus on books and the lessons it
offers.
It is often heard that many children watch TV for long hours and that is detrimental
to their health. Television programs are addictive and many children do not
concentrate on other important things like study or outdoor activity when they
become addicted to watching TV programs.
Finally, television cannot replace the book as learning tool due to television might
be a tool that would be wastage of time. However, if children spend more time in
reading books there is no chance of wastage of time. The primary focus of
television is entertaining people while books are considered as the cornerstone of
knowledge and wisdom.
From a perspective, it might seem logical to charge foreign tourists more to enter a
traditional and historical place as most of those monuments and establishments are
state-owned and the government fund those from the tax they collect from the local
residences. From this regard, many feel that local residences are already paying a
portion of the ticket money through the tax they pay to the government. However,
this is a very narrow view and this arrangement dissatisfies the visiting tourists as
many of them find it discriminatory. From a broader view, if more foreign
travellers are encouraged to visit nationally important tourist attractions and
important historical and cultural place, this would bring more foreign tourists and
this would ensure more earning from the tourism sector. Furthermore, it would
help spread the national and cultural importance around the world. From this
perspective, collecting some extra money from the entrance ticket is a shortsighted
step.
Furthermore, happy tourists encourage their immediate friends and family
members to visit a country and some tourist attractions. If those tourists get the
impression that they are being changed more money than the local people, they
would psychologically feel unhappy and would share their dissatisfaction with
others which would mean less foreign tourists. Many shrine and monuments are
maintained by the ticket money it collects and if the number of visiting travelers
get decreased, it would be tough for the authority to maintain those important
places. From this perspective, having an equal entrance fee has a better impact.
To conclude, from a broader perspective having the same ticket fee, both for the
residence and foreign tourists, to allow the entrance to any nationally and
historically important place including museums, art exhibitions, parks and
historical places is more beneficial and I completely agree that the fee should not
be different.
3.Universities should allocate the same amount of money to students’ sports
activities as they allocate to their libraries. Do you agree?
Model Essay 1:
It is often seen that universities provide the best education to their students and
prepare them as the ideal citizens of the nation. They also focus on physical health
by offering them various sports facilities. Some people argue that sports are
equally important and must have the same allocation of funds as university
libraries. However, others state that main aptitude of educational institutions is to
provide lofty education and must invest handsome amount for the betterment of
libraries. I agree to some extent that role of the library is far more important than
sports activities.
It is very important to have good physical education for students. It will not only
improve their health but also helped them in developing skills such as teamwork,
handling pressure under tensed situations etc. Therefore, it is required by the
universities to spend on this constituent. Furthermore, nowadays there is too much
study pressure on students. In order to relax and re-energise, such activities should
be provided at a regular interval.
Library is an essential part of every educational institution. Large numbers of
students rely on libraries to complete their assignments, research works and final
projects. It shows that existence of a university is incomplete without having one
or more libraries in it. Thus, a huge amount should be invested in libraries to
improve its books catalogue. Latest books, journals and other reference materials
should be incorporated in libraries to facilitate its users.
To sum up, I would like to say that spending time in libraries is more worthful and
has lofty values than playing. Universities must upgrade their libraries accordance
with technological advancement without considering the cost so that numerous
benefits could be taken out.
4.Tourism is becoming increasingly important as a source of revenue to many
countries, but its disadvantages should not be overlooked. To what extent do you
agree or disagree?
Model Essay 1:
It is an undeniable fact that tourist spots in every country have become more
popular and have so many visitors. The development of tourism has so many
benefits, such as more income from tourists and exposure of culture, although the
drawbacks of this development cannot be ignored. This essay discusses the
drawbacks of tourism for such countries followed by relevant examples. I agree
that the disadvantages of the tourism should be handled prudently to lessen its
adverse effects on a country.
Firstly, tourism activities can threaten the traditional culture of a country. Local
people tend to imitate the cultures that are brought by the tourists from their home
countries. Based on a cultural research conducted in Indonesia last year, local
people stated that their traditional cultures are not suitable to the modern era,
whereas the cultures brought by tourists to their country are more suitable and
modern. For example, more local people like wearing modern clothes rather than
traditional one as well as they follow more modern dances than the traditional one.
Secondly, tourism can cause the bad effect to the environment. Take littering cases
as an example. It is irrefutable fact that so many tourists ignore the policy about
rubbish. Bali as a tourism destination, besides getting awards because of the
successful tourism, this city is well-known for the rubbish as well. The government
face the difficulty in handling this littering problem because the increasing number
of tourists each year. Then, the local people get the effect to their environment,
such as land pollution, flood, and air pollution because of the waste.
On the other hand, tourism can increase the national government income from
tourists' visa and local people get the work-field as well as the chance to learn other
cultures. For instance, local people can build home stay area for tourist and gain
income from that business. It can reduce the number of unemployment people and
grow knowledge of local people about tourists' language.
Based on the previous explanation, we can conclude that tourism will be the threat
for local cultures and environment, even though it is good for gaining income for
government and local people as well as create a chance for local people to have job
and knowledge.
5.Throughout history, people have dreamed of living in a perfect society, but they
have not agreed on what an ideal society would be like. What do you think is the
most important element of a perfect society in the modern world? How can people
work towards achieving an ideal society?
Model Essay 1:
Most people in the world have a dream to live in an ideal society and lead a happy
and meaningful life. However, they do not have the same idea about what the
perfect society would look like. I personally think that there are three indicators
that can measure the perfection of a society in the modern world: social value,
proper infrastructure and employment opportunity. This essay discusses these
factors and the ways to achieve that ideal society followed by the examples.
Firstly, social value and social bonding among people is the most important aspect
of a perfect society. In a society where people have a strong bonding and obey the
social norms tend to lead a better life. Society is formed with many families. If the
family members are close and have a better relationship, they would form a better
society. A perfect society must have people with human quality and good social
behaviours.
Secondly, having good infrastructures and services can be one of the requirements
of a perfect society. People need the infrastructures and public services to fulfil
their necessity. Take people living in Melbourne as an example. Melbourne is
claimed as a most livable city in the world and the people can be classified to live
in a perfect society. This country has so many modern infrastructures, for example,
modern public health centre, school, bus stop, and others as well as good services
in the airport, local government office, etc. This ideal condition can be achieved if
the people pay the tax regularly and obey the rules. The tax payment becomes a
resource to build good and complete facilities for society. Furthermore, if the
society obeys the regulation, they will not have problems with the services of
people.
Thirdly, an ideal society needs sufficient job fields to work in. People can fulfil
their needs by having a good salary from their work and have a good career in the
future. For example, people in Los Angeles spend most their time for working and
have a good financial condition. This situation can be created by the society if
people can be an entrepreneur. By being an entrepreneur, they can create new work
fields for others and reduce the number of unemployed people.
In conclusion, a perfect society has to have good infrastructures and services as
well as sufficient job vacancy. Then, this situation can be built by paying tax,
obeying the policy, and creating the work-fields by entrepreneurs.
6.More and more companies are allowing employees to work at home. Do you
think this is a positive or negative development?
Model Essay 1:
With the advent of the computer and the widespread use of the internet, people
have changed the way they perform everyday tasks. An increasing number of
corporations believe in letting employees work full-time or part-time from home
and thousands of people are doing freelancing to earn their livings. The following
essay will discuss the pros and cons sides over this change.
A recent poll shows that people lose self-control and discipline easily while they
perform professional work via telecommuting. Because people are given more
freedoms to deal with the tasks and without a strict deadline, they often mixed their
professional attitude with their personal life. They often lie to their employers and
thus perform poorly.
On the contrary, imagine that there is no one looking over your shoulder and
enforcing strict hours and because of that you may feel tempted to work endlessly.
That can strongly influence your working effectively. Therefore, there are other
issues emerged that employees can't get along well with others since everyone just
concentrating on their missions and it's easy to be overlooked.
Nevertheless, other people propose that the argument above is merely a one-sided
story, by working at home you save on many hidden costs associated with going to
work. These include costs of commuting, car purchasing, fuel costs, and parking
spots as well. Moreover, flexible time and comfortable workplace provides
employees more inspirations and creatively, since thinking out of the box is
essential for those who work in advertising companies, IT firms and in other fields
of works that require creativity. Without the stresses and strict monitoring from the
office, working independently in their own preferred environment at their own
pace, professionals are often a lot happier and a lot more productive.
In conclusion, it depends on companies current situations to consider whether to
allow employees work from home or not. For my view, as a designer, I prefer to
work from home since it gives me more inspirations and freedom.
7.Many people say that the only way to guarantee a good job is to complete a
course of university education. Others claim that it is better to start work after
school and gain experience in the world of work. Discuss
Model Answer 1:
At recent years, there is an ongoing debate whether by completing further study in
university or by joining the workload directly will lead someone to be employed in
a good job. I personally believe that continuing higher study in a course at a
university will alleviate the opportunity to get involved in the labour market.
The light competitiveness in work field, in some ways, increases the need for
qualified workers. Moved by this trigger, universities develop the quality of the
students by improving the specialisations and by extending the variety of courses.
Taken as an example, business courses have been expanding the field of study in a
wide range of majors such as public health business which provides the
participants to focus on hospital management, pharmacy business, etc. or social
based entrepreneur which develops the candidates to build their social-based
businesses by a small amount of money.
On the other hand, undeniably, students in university seem to be the lack of
practical experiences in working environment. Being an employee means more of
responsibilities, job deadlines, etc. and there are several consequences if they show
bad performances. To solve this case, internship programmes and core soft skill
training can be effective ways out. University faces challenges to keep improving
the curricula in order to prepare the students with work experiences by entering the
utmost graduate students with 3 months working programmes in thrived companies
as well as with several working skills training such as leadership training.
To sum up, in spite of the growth of demand for universities' graduates in good
offer jobs, it is inevitable that they have more positive sides to fit them in such
enormous opportunities.
8.Some people think that spending a lot on holding wedding parties, birthday
parties and other celebrations is just a waste of money. Others, however, think that
these are necessary for individuals and the society. Discuss.
Model Essay 1:
In the current world, most of the people like to celebrate any special occasion by
inviting a lot of people. The discussion that throwing too much money to hold
parties like birthday, marriage or any other special event is a debatable one, with
strong logics provided by the supporters of both the views.
A few argue that the special events need to be celebrated grandly, as it happens
only a few times in a lifetime. For instance, marriage is considered to occur once in
a lifetime and the people want to have the memory of that event until their last
breath. This is possible only when the location is well decorated and all of the
friends and the neighbours are invited. By spending limited money, it is almost
impossible to achieve something special which will be remembered forever. Thus
it is obvious, why some people incline towards this point of view.
On the other hand, some people believe that it is not right to spend a huge amount
money on personal celebrations as there are a lot of people across the globe under
starvation. For example, in most of the African countries, many people do not even
have food to eat for a single meal a day. In case, the money spent on celebration
can be sent to the people who are really in need, definitely, a lot of life can be
saved. Hence, it is clear why a few individuals refute with high spending parties.
Considering the memories of special occasions as well as starvation, spending
much money for parties has been supported and refuted by many. Even though
memories of some special events are important, saving human life from starvation
is more important. Hence, in my opinion, it is necessary to cut down the spending
on parties and spend that money for the poor people’s food
9.Many people say that movies and TV programs affect us negatively while others
say that they are two influential and useful media for us. How do movies and TV
affect us?
There has been tremendous growth of entertainment media over the last few years.
Media influenced numerous people and it becomes an essential part of their life.
Some people argue that media is spoiling youngster badly due to the severe
violence that is being used on TV programmes and films. However, others state
that it keeps us updated with the latest news and a source of entertainment for
many. I strongly believe that media has undeniable benefits on people lives.
Media play a vital role in easing our stress and tension. Nowadays people are busy
in their hectic routine work, they get very less time for recreational activities.
Movies and television provide best sources of entertainment and help us to become
refreshed and informed, relaxed and energetic for our future work. In addition to
this television also provide news and other informative programs which create
awareness and enhance our knowledge.
However, youngsters are negatively affected by the violence and aggression shown
in movies and dramas. They have become less patience and more susceptible to
violence. This has also increased the crime rate in the society. People want to act
like their favourite celebrity in real life, which cause many problems. For Instance,
people start fighting over a small dispute which could turn into a battlefield on a
later stage. Fashion and style that youngsters often follow because of their
favourite actor or actress are often unacceptable in many societies.
In conclusion, I believe that we should use media as a fun activity rather than
highlight its negative aspects. It is also recommended to remove violence. Finally,
movies and TV has more positive effects and should be the mandatory part of
everyone lives.
10.Nowadays we are producing more and more rubbish. Why do you think this is
happening? What can governments do to help reduce the amount of rubbish
produced?
Model Answer 1:
The modern society is generating an increasing amount of waste and the waste
management has become one of the pressing issues both in developing and
developed countries. With the inevitable rise in population and industrialisation,
this problem will be further aggravated. The government can help decrease waste
production by educating the public and by promoting recycling.
The global population has reached a staggering seven billion recently. Solid waste
is a by-product of this phenomenon. This number is expected to balloon to nine
billion by 2050 if the current trend goes on. The amount of trash produced is
likewise expected to rise. Manufacturing industries also contribute to the total of
accumulated waste. While market demands go higher, the number of factories built
also increases to satisfy this demand.
This unsavoury problem has taken centre stage as the world focused on tackling
global warming. One way that the government can help alleviate this burden on the
environment is by educating the culprits – the general public. By promoting the use
of reusable bags when shopping, the amount of plastic bags can be greatly reduced.
Furthermore, the government can also run advertisements and put up posters in
ways that a household can reduce the trash it generates. Another step that the
government may undertake is through sound recycling. It must invest in a
technology that can be managed through the municipal level. To encourage its
citizens to adhere to this program, collection areas for recyclable materials must be
accessible. Sweden has set these areas within 300 meters from residential areas and
so far they are succeeding.
To conclude, it is a fact that the human population will continue to rise. In order
for the world’s natural resources remain sustainable, the government and the public
must cooperate to find a solution to this ever-present problem.
11.Many young people are leaving their homes in rural areas to study or work in
the cities. What are the reasons? Do the advantages of this development outweigh
its disadvantages?
Migration from rural areas to cities has become more prevalent due to the
availability of better universities and job opportunities there. While some people
argue that the disadvantages of this phenomenon outweigh the merits, I believe that
this development is beneficial in many ways.
There are two main reasons which urge people to leave their rural villages and
towns and move to the cities. The first reason is that most of the universities are
located in the cities and these universities attract the ambitious students who want
to earn higher degrees. The second reason is that the job market in the cities is
more active and therefore, it is much easier for professionals to find jobs there
compared to the rural areas where the economic activities are limited.
There is no doubt that there are several disadvantages to this migration such as the
exponential population growth in the cities which hits the cities’ infrastructure
severely and also this migration leaves the rural areas abandoned and demotes
some necessary professions such as farming. But, on the other hand, moving to
cities has two major merits for the individuals and nations also have immensely
benefited from this phenomenon.
The major advantage gained is the remarkable increase in the numbers of the
university graduates which ultimately increases the society’s education level. The
second merit is that cities allow more people to have better jobs and enhance their
financial conditions.
In conclusion, most of the people in rural areas tend to move to big cities for
reasons related to their career and their education. Although there are some
disadvantages to this issue, we cannot deny that the individuals and society are
benefiting much from this phenomenon.
12.Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world.
Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding
between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree
with this opinion?
Today the world is more connected than any time before and people from all over
the countries can arrive at their destination within 24 hours. However, while this
possibility permits to millions of individuals to encounter different cultures every
year, the phenomenon of the international tourism brings also conflicts between
people with different habits and costumes.
To begin, tourism creates isolation more than integration. In fact, tourists prefer to
look at different places, costumes and habits like sitting in front of the television
screen, watching a documentary, more than sharing time with the indigenous
population. Furthermore, tourists don't respect foreign habits and cultures, often
because they don't understand it. For example, they throw the litter on the ground,
or even worse they don't respect their hosts’ religion.
Nevertheless, the effects of international tourism are not all negative. Sometimes
tourists fall in love with people and places they visit and decide to live in there,
acting as mediators between cultures and enhancing integration. It's the case of lots
of tourist guides that decided to move abroad and enjoy a different lifestyle and
culture, trying to share their feelings with visitors. Also speaking the language of
the place we visit can help us understand people from different cultures.
In addition, a large amount of money around the tourism business contrasts the
tendency of some countries to close their border to foreign people. This can lead to
a better comprehension of these cultures and so to integration.
In conclusion, the biggest industry in the world have to feel the need of changes in
the way tourism is structured, so it could become a mean of integration and
reciprocal understanding more than create tensions between cultures.
13.Demand for food is increasing worldwide. What is the cause of this? What
measures can the international community take to meet this demand?
whether the agricultural sector can meet the growing demand for food worldwide.
This issue is caused due to two main causes – the ever increasing population and
extreme changes in climatic conditions. However, it can be resolved through
appropriate measures.
The growing demand for food is caused by the ever increasing population.
Actually, over the last 50 years, there was a drastic increase in human population.
In fact, world population is expected to increase from 7.9 billion in 2017 to 9.7
billion by 2050. Unfortunately, food production has not kept pace with. Climatic
changes happening due to various reasons like depletion of ozone layer, acid rain
and global warming have led to a decrease in the production of food.
However, this situation could be remedied by farmers by increasing the area under
cultivation and by using improved farming techniques. For example, yield can be
increased by using quality fertilizers, improved methods of irrigation and modern
techniques called precision farming. In addition to this, the government needs to
take active participation in educating farmers about the use of such techniques and
products. The international community also needs to step in. Countries where food
is surplus must show the willingness to export it to poor countries at a nominal
price. This will ensure that everyone irrespective of their financial situation or
nationality has access to three square meals a day.
In conclusion, though population is increasing and climatic changes have damaged
the current supply of food by using improved farming techniques and bringing
more area under cultivation, food production can be stimulated.
14.Experts say older people were happier and healthier in the past because they did
more exercise and spent more time with family and friends, whereas now many
suffer loneliness and health problems. What are the causes of this and what are
some solutions?
Some people believe that if senior citizens increase their social interaction and
keep themselves physically active they can lead a healthy and happy life but most
of them do not do so. This essay will try to identify the reasons behind this and
offer some possible resolutions for the same.
There can be several causes behind this trend. First, many seniors live alone. Their
children have migrated to cities in search of better employment. Consequently,
they are alone most of the time. While going out and talking to neighbours is still
possible, many elderly people choose to stay within the confines of their home.
This could be due to the nagging aches and pains that afflict everyone as they age.
Unfortunately, when they do not move about much, their health deteriorates even
further. There are also some seniors who believe that they have discharged all of
their duties and there is nothing more for them to do. They also tend to live a life of
inactivity and seclusion.
There can be some possible solutions to this issue. Governments and private
organizations should offer jobs to senior citizens. This benefits them as well as the
organization because they can stay mentally and socially occupied while putting
their extensive experience and expertise to good use. Seniors are experienced
people. There should be avenues for them to use their knowledge and experience
for the benefit of them. For example, they can engage in community work. Also,
the older people should indulge more in hobbies they find interesting. Gardening
for instance, can keep a person on his toes and physically fit. Furthermore, the
older generation people can join local clubs with their peers and friends to reduce
loneliness.
To conclude, older people lead a sedentary and isolated lifestyle mainly due to age
related ailments that restrict their movement. They can solve these problems to a
great extent by getting involved in community work and pursuing a hobby.
15.People spend a lot of money on various things as they earn more money
nowadays than before. Is it a positive or negative development?
In the modern world with all aspects of development that humans are doing, people
now can earn more money than in the past. Accordingly, they are spending the
amount of money on various things and, in my belief, it could have as many
positive effects as negative.
On the bright side, expending money could be a leading factor for economic
welfare. Firstly, people spend money to buy clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc so the
producer could produce more items to sell and pay salary to their employees.
Secondly, for some people, their income money directly related to other people's
shopping habits, for example, hairdressers, makeup artists or even supermarket
owners their income money depends on people. Additionally, statistics results
show that whatever people spend more money on buying things means that the
economy is growing. For instance, people who are living in China spend millions
to buy houses, cars, gems or strange things so that this money which came from
people could help society to improve.
On the dark side, although spending money could provide jobs, welfare or Self-
satisfaction, it is being many problems for the community when it became an
obsession for rich people. Sometimes they spend a huge amount of money to buy
exclusive objects like a cruise ship, golden car or exotic animal fur or ancient
artifacts but they never use them because they lose their interest in the items and it
is a real personality problem. Also, this kind of behavior could influence society's
health like conspicuous consumption, to illustration, a family with a mid-range
income wants to buy very expensive objects just because their neighbor has.
In conclusion, despite the negative impact of this phenomenon on social health, in
my opinion, spending money could provide more businesses and employment for
people and help economic growth in the country.
16.Many famous sports players advertise sports products. Do the advantages of this
outweigh the disadvantages?
Nowadays, advertising has become a crucial part of every business. Many well-
known sports personalities advertise various sport-related products. There are a
couple of benefits such as an increase in employment and children involving active
lifestyle, but there are also drawbacks to be taken into consideration.
To begin with, one principal advantage of famous sportspeople advertising a
sports-related product is it helps in creating jobs. Many people purchase products
that are endorsed by their favorite sports person, which helps to increase the sale,
thereby, generating employment. For example, MRF is endorsed by famous Indian
cricket personality, Virat Kholi, which has helped the company to increase its sale
of cricket bats by 25% and employment by 32%. Another advantage of brands
getting endorsed by well-known sportspeople is it encourages children to indulge
active lifestyle. Sports star normally advertise products by playing their game or
showing their skills, which encourages children to imitate or learn the same skills
by playing the desired game; thereby, avoiding a sedentary lifestyle. Overall, it
helps to generate enough jobs and appeal to youths to adopt an active and healthy
lifestyle.
On the other hand, one problem that can arise by sports players advertising sport-
related products is it put undue pressure on parents. Children force their parents to
buy the desired product by seeing their star endorsing the same, which forces
parents to divide unplanned budget to satisfy children's need. For instance,
according to a recent poll, 47% of parents complained that they need to spend 10%
of their unplanned expenses on sports-related products
in order to satisfy their children's demand. Another problem that can arise is that
products get expensive due to being endorsed by a celebrity. As a huge chunk of
money has to be paid to celebrity, the cost is recovered from the price of the
product, making it expensive. Therefore, pressure on parents and an increase in the
cost of the product are a couple of disadvantages that result from celebrity
endorsing sports products.
To conclude, brands getting advertised by elegant sports personalities can result in
a couple of benefits, but forceful pressure on parents to buy the desired products
and increase in the cost are some disadvantages that can occur.
17.These days many families move to other countries for work. Some people
believe that the children in these families benefit from this move. However, others
believe that it makes life more difficult for the children. Discuss both these views
and give your own opinion.
Nowadays, a significant number of families immigrate to foreign countries in
pursuit of more job opportunities. While some people assert this trend is beneficial
for dependent offspring, others opine that this venture brings more difficulties to
the children. This essay seeks to investigate both mentioned viewpoint, followed
by my own perception.
On the one hand, there are a plethora of advantages to support the former group’s
perspective. First and perhaps the most lucrative point is that children alongside
their families, escape the challenges of their home country. To elaborate, there are
many problems, including unemployment that forces families to move abroad;
hence, these children will find it easier to find a job. Moreover, immigrant children
are more successful in climbing the ladder of their career even compared to
natives. Statistics show that the unemployment rate among bilingual adults who
immigrated when they were children is less than 20 percent, additionally, they hold
more pivotal positions in various fields.
On the other hand, the latter group claim that moving to another country during
childhood has its share of drawbacks. Immigration has almost an unbearable
negative physiological effect on them because children have to get acquainted with
a new culture. To illustrate, latest researches conducted by A.B.C university prove
that one of the major causes of childhood depression is the cultural and language
barrier to immigration. Furthermore, they have to abandon their school and friends
which adds to the mentioned problem.
To recapitulate, while both sides have indisputable points in defending their
viewpoints. From my notion, for children, the merits of moving abroad outweigh
the demerits they will have a brighter future due to the ampler availability of job
opportunities and elimination of old country’s problems.
18.Many people think that more money will make them happier. How important is
money for happiness?
Making more money has become more important to people rather than it used to be
once. It is associated with the common belief that to live more happily you need to
be wealthier. In this essay, I will discuss about the role of money in people’s lives
and the reasons causing them to be so reliant on monetary issues to feel happy. As
well, I will try to draw some conclusions.
There are some key factors resulting people in giving too much importance to
money over other aspects of lives. Needless to say, the more money they have the
more achievable their goals will be. If they had so much money to have a lavish
lifestyle, they could buy everything they would like to, from big houses to luxury
cars. Rich people could keep up with the latest fashions if they were keen on new
trends. Last but not least, they have the chance of being surrounded by a
substantial number of friends, which in-turn makes their emotional demands be
fulfilled.
Despite the fact that money is the key to afford living expenses, hardly could it be
the only way to feel happy. Firstly, making money to excess would not guarantee
happiness in families. Kim Kardashian, for instance, was talking about her fears
once. ‘I cannot trust people anymore because many of my friends have betrayed
my trust up to now’, she said. Secondly, happiness is not a feeling that you find
outside yourself. You can enjoy every minute of your life in a cabin watching the
beautiful nature around you while a rich person might never camp in the nature
instead of staying in luxury hotels. Finally and more importantly, though, it is the
quality of relationships among family members that would create a happy and
convivial atmosphere in which they live. Many of less affluent families have been
seen to live with lower stress levels to their close relationships with each other.
In conclusion, although having money is essential to make a living, it is desirable
up to a certain point. Furthermore, happiness is a sense more dependent on
people’s characteristics and families. My view is that to live happily you need to be
as wealthy as you can afford your basic demands, enjoy your life and be nice to
your loved ones.
19.Some people think parents should supervise their children’s activities closely,
while others believe children should have more freedom. Discuss
It is often debated how much freedom children should have. Although some people
believe that the activities of children should be monitored closely by parents,
others oppose this viewpoint. I, however, believe that parental supervision is only
necessary until they are mature.
Children should be monitored until they reach a certain age because they are
unaware of the world outside the secure environment of the home and they are not
mature enough to understand the difference between good and bad. Consequently,
they can fall an easy prey to a bad company of friends, if not guided by parents.
Furthermore, the internet has a lot to offer apart from knowledge and information.
To exemplify, one of my friend’s daughter misused social media websites to send
obscene / vulgar messages to her male friends to draw their attention. These types
of instances can be avoided if children use the internet under the surveillance of
their parents.
On the other hand, there are some valid reasons to give children the freedom to
make their choices. Firstly, after they reach a certain level of maturity, children
should be encouraged to make their own decision. This practice will help them
learn faster than those who are dependent on their parents for making decisions for
them. Actually, learning from one’s own mistakes is easier than learning from
knowledge imparted by one’s parents.
In conclusion, I believe that until a certain age, children need parental guidance;
however, once they are mature, they should be allowed to make their own
decisions because this practice will help them to achieve greater success than when
they are dependent on their parents.
20.Today, many people do not realize how important the natural world is. Why is
this How can people learn more about the importance of the natural world?
Nature is the source of our all needs, so we should have the knowledge of our
source of livelihood. Most of the people do not care about nature, although our
survival solely depends on nature. I will discuss the reasons of this ignorance and
how people can learn more about our world in my further paragraphs.
To embark on, though all our needs such as food, shelter and cloths are the gift of
Mother Nature, people still ignore this facts. There are numerous reasons behind
this lack of awareness. Firstly, today’s generation receive all their needs in
supermarkets and malls. They believe that all their required items are abundant in
the society. Secondly, government are not giving much importance in spreading
knowledge source of foods, cloths and all our day-to-day used materials. Lastly,
older people afraid of sharing this knowledge with young ones as they are
technologically more advance than older generation. Older people feel themselves
outdated even though they have the most valuable knowledge gathered though
experiences.
In many ways, awareness and importance of nature can be spread to people.
Firstly, government should include a subject in schools which is all about nature
and its importance. We should nurture this awareness from childhood so that in
future they respect nature and its gift. Secondly, society must create a platform to
exchange ideas among older and young generation so that experiences earn by
aged people become a boon for next generation. Otherwise, community, as a
whole, will not able to raise their level.
To recapitulate, government and society must work hand in hand to share
importance of nature from generation to generation through teaching our children
and explaining the difficulties faced by older generation.
21.In many countries, weddings are getting bigger and more expensive than the
past. Is this a positive or negative development?
It is true that present day wedding ceremonies are grand and more materialistic as
compared to past. In my opinion, it is an unnecessary squandering of money and
loss of natural resources which makes it a negative development.
Nowadays, people wish to have a fairytale wedding which cost them an arm or a
leg. This is because apart from buying exclusive outfits and accessories for the
bride / groom, they also have to pay for providing the best hospitality to their
relatives like booking a descent hotel for their stay, gifts and so on. People from
high socioeconomic can afford such expenses ; however, those who belong to low
socioeconomic cohort can not handle it. The later group have to give away all their
savings just to make their day special and to maintain social status. Some people
even take loan for this reason and are in debt for years .Indeed ,this is not a wise
decision .Instead this money can be used in a better way by saving it for future
emergencies or for other important work .
Moreover, such weddings causes heavy loss of our natural resources.T he main
attraction of any nuptial is the delicacies offered to the guest to gorge on and the
flamboyant ambience and décor of the venue. Hence, to make it a mammoth event
and to show up social status no stones are kept unturned by the people . Althought
the food is prepared according to the guestlist ,yet much of it is wasted as people
are served liberally beyond their appetite .In current scenario, where many nations
are facing scarcity of food and electricity, it is irrational to waste such useful
resourses.
In conclusion, the big fat weddings have direct impact not only on our financial
state but also on our valuable natural resources . Therefore , it is certainly a
negative development.
22.Some believe that it is the responsibility of people to take care of the
environment. Others say it is the government that should take care of the
environment. Discuss
People have different views about whether the protection of environment are under
responsibility of government or of people. In my opinion, while individuals have
some responsibilities, the prior duty is belong to governments.
Each people are responsible to decrease their carbon print. When they decrease the
carbon usage, most environmental problems will start to decrease. For this reason,
people can start with using glass products instead of plastics which will result in
stop production of plastics because of less demand. People also limit their
unneccessary paper, water and electric usage. Smart usage of them will definetly
save trees and water resources which are essential element of our environment. As
a result, when individual take a role in saving environment, it will spread to
factories and other communities then this movement trigger to reverse effects of
global warming and other environmental problems.
On the other hand, even individual role is important, without government force is
impossible to sustain better environment. Governments have power to control
factories and impose law for protection of environment. Factories can be supported
financially and giving tax advantages in order to produce and use environmental
friendly products which will lead to common use among people. Governments can
also establish relationships with other developed countries in order to make
protocol for environment such as Kyoto and they also can help underdeveloped
nations in terms of educational, financial and technical support. Without
international support, it does not possible to protect environment. As a result,
government have enough power to control and lead everything related with the
environment.
In conclusion, although it is important to take place in environment protection as
an individual, governments responsibilities are higher and they have enough power
to allocate their resources to provide green environment for public.
23.These days, mobile phones and the internet are very important to the ways in
which people relate to one another socially. Do the advantages of this development
outweigh the disadvantages?
Nowadays, internet and mobile phones are very necessary for such ways in which
pupils attach to one other socially. I think there are more advantages rather than
disadvantages. I will discuss about in the upcoming paragraphs.
To begin with, there are some merits for this view which are described in the
following paragraphs. First of all, due to technology, it can be seen that in such
areas is developing and also there are a great deal of masses using many social
apps like whatsapp, instagram, snapchat and so on. With the help of this type of
apps people easily interect with other people as well as they easily make a good
friend and their they do spend time with their friends through video calls and audio
calls as well as chat with their friends.
Moving further, with the help of internet and mobile phones they play online
games with their friends. For instance, PUBG game is very popular in some
countries and this trend is increasing day by day as well as people play this games
in one teamm and there are four persons involve in this team. Moreover, people
can easily communicate with other persons and also share their feelings, emotions,
ideas and opinions.
However, there are some demerits for this development. Firstly, these days people
are over depended on internet and mobile phones. Therefore, they do not
communicate with their family members as well as family gap is also increasing.
Secondly, sometimes some friends are fake on internet so that is why they can
harm the other people.
To sum up, there are more advantages as compare to disadvantages. If people can
less use of internet then th
24.Scientists believe that in order to protect the environment, people must use less
energy in their daily lives. However, most people have not changed the way they
live. Why do you think many people have not taken individual action? What could
be done to encourage them to take action?
The course of human civilization has had a devastating effect on the environment.
Now we are facing problems such as – melting of glaciers, depletion of the ozone
layer and Climate change to name a few. Environmentalists have been warning the
governments and the general public over many years now but with no effect.
People still have no regard for the indiscriminate use of coal derived fuels and
wastage of water. This could be due to the lack of economical alternatives in the
market or a feeling of apathy due to the extremeness of present lifestyle. We must
encourage people to take part in the preservation of the environment by
introducing safe, effective and economical alternatives and by government
regulation.
Many citizens are aware of the environmental concerns from the exhaust from
industries and vehicles. The dependence of today’s’ life on coal based fuels is
extreme and has been developed over the past centuries. It will be time consuming
and expensive to make a system change. Though many environmentally safe
alternatives exist they are out of the reach of the common man. For example,
battery operated cars are expensive and the networks of charging stations are still
developing whereas, petrol and diesel filling stations with facilities are easily
available.
People can be encouraged to conserve energy by making the alternatives more
accessible to all sections of society. Governments must support by companies
developing environmental safe products and technology by offering incentives.
Education is also an important factor, as the consumers today are busy and stressed
and do not have the time to spend seeking out new products and methods of saving
energy.
In conclusion, we must become a more environmentally sound society so that our
children will be able to inherit an inhabitable earth. This is our responsibility as
parents and caregivers. It is unfortunate that we have neglected this for
convenience and greed. Therefore all action must be taken to correct this
environmental degradation.
25.Films and computer games which contain violence are very popular. Some
people believe they have a negative effect on society and so should be banned.
Other people, however, say they are just harmless and help people to relax. Discuss
both these points of view and give your own opinion.
The effect of violent television and video games on a society is a grave concern.
While many people argue that violent programmes ought to be banned because of
their bad influence on people especially children, others believe that they are a
good source of entertainment. In my opinion, their influence on people is
pernicious, and hence, they should be regulated.
According to one view, the violent films, serials and online games are mere
medium mediums of enjoyment and relaxation. It is believed that watching violent
actions or playing aggressive videogames is psychologically helpful as they allow
the viewer or user to release their suppressed violent emotions in a safe way.
On the contrary, studies have shown that consistent exposure to foul language and
bad conduct adversely influences people, and they begin to perceive violence as
normal. For example, according to a recent study, children who regularly play
aggressive video games, tend to be more aggressive and impulsive. Once violence
becomes normalized in their psyche, they stop seeing it as a crime. Unfortunately,
this gives rise to criminal tendencies in them. I personally think that such
programmes need to be regulated since they are detrimental to individuals as well
as the society.
In conclusion, people may have different opinions about the depiction of violence
on television and in video games. In my opinion, violent content ought to be
censured
26.Many doctors say that people in today’s world do not do enough physical
exercise. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions are there to this
problem?
In a recent study, medical practitioners have mentioned that the current lifestyle of
people does not include physical workouts. People are more inclined towards the
sedentary lifestyle. This issue is of grave concern as a lack of exercise leads to
many health issues and needs to be taken care for the healthy living.
The main reason for the unhealthy habit is the influence of technology in all
aspects of life. The available tech-friendly options have quickly replaced the old
ways where physical strength was involved. All new building has provided
elevators, which people prefer to take instead of climbing stairs. Similarly, the
usage of the car is preferred more in comparison to walking or cycling to work.
Another influence of technology is seen in our young generation where children
prefer to stay home to play video games rather than getting involved in outdoor
activities.
This change is leading people towards wrong choices which have an adverse effect
in the long term. Raising awareness regarding the subject is essential. The
government should implement health awareness campaigns in offices and schools.
The offices should make sure staff is attending these workshops. Introducing gym
in offices can be another way to ensure staff participating in routine physical
exercise. Organising health fairs in the society can be helpful to raise awareness
where residents can be registered into health programs which will boost their
physical health. In schools, it should be mandatory to complete minimum hours of
physical education and activities. The government can also introduce health drives
which the public can attend and get the benefit.
In conclusion, I believe the healthy lifestyle is vital for long life. It is time that the
public is encouraged to include physical exercise in their daily routine.
27.More and more parents are allowing their children to play on computers and
tablets as they think that children should learn technology skills. Do the advantages
of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
In recent years, children is permitted by their parents to play much times with
tablets and computers due to provide their sophisticated technological skills. In my
opinion, it is agreed that these devices give the advantages rather than the
disadvantages. Analyzig this circumtance that computers and tablets can make the
kids smarter than ordinary typical age group and it would be fluencing their
knowledge for the next grow up period.
First and foremost, both of computers and tablets will improve children become
briliant people in their golden age. Due to the fact that, in the beginning period of
age supplying much more information could built their brain in the best condition.
For instance, if an early age people is getting stimulation everyday from the
gadget, it will stimulate the brain to record many types of data. So, extra-ordinary
kids who familiar with the gadget have a big opportunity to gain excellent person.
Additionally, toddler which is usual with gadget often obtain an achievement in
their school. Because of, they spent the time for positive activities such as playing
games, learning numbers, or watching videos from sophistichated things.
On the other sides, using electronic appearance can be affected children's health.
Owing this, if they are spending a lot of time looking up the media, the kids can get
eye problem. It is caused that the kids wear a glasses to assist their sight.
Moreover, utilizing media without parental advisory will be harmful the kids to see
inappropriate broadcasting. So, parental advisory needed to control their child to
reach benefit effect.
To conclude, in my point of view the parents who give permit for the child to let
using electronic tools provide positive effect rather than negative for their grow up
period.
28.Many people join distance‐learning programs (study material, post, TV,
Internet) and study at home, but some people think that it cannot bring the same
benefit as attending colleges or universities does. Do you agree or disagree?
Distance learning, a modern phenomenon, has become widely popular, especially
after the invention of the internet. In the pre-internet era, it was confined to posts
and TV and could attract a nominal number of leaners. Despite a boom in home-
based learning trend due to the technological advancements, it is not as much
beneficial as attending a formal educational institute, as far as I am concerned.
To begin with, a young pupil drops out from a school mainly to earn a wage to
support his family and this is more common in developing and poor countries.
According to a recent report, more than 30% students leave schools in South Asian
countries due to financial hindrance. The government in such a country should
focus on developing condition of parents who have school-going offspring. The
education should be free and some subsidies should be provided to poor students.
Besides, the government's initiatives to create more jobs would also improve this
situation. However, the greatest step the government should and can take is
arranging re-schooling facility for those disarrayed pupils with some incentives
and job provisions.
Moreover, the school authority should make education more fun in school to retain
young students. For instance, some of the Japanese schools use interactive and fun
methods to teach young minds and this has increased students’ school attendance
dramatically. Such initiatives should be welcomed and more widely used. Besides,
the school authority can arrange some clerical jobs to needy students to help them
continue their studies.
To conclude, education is the most important pillar for the development of a nation
and the state and school authority should help students stay in schools and finish
their academic years. Without having an educated nation, the crime and
unemployment would skyrocket to push the society to a complete chaos.
34.Children are facing more pressures nowadays from academic, social and
commercial perspectives. What are the causes of these pressures and what
measures should be taken to reduce this? Write at least 250 words.
A common belief is that children of today’s society are facing huge academic
pressures. Their competition is not with the children sitting next to them or in the
next class. It is at national and international levels. Parents have high expectations
for their child. They want them to excel in every field. Every parent wants their
child to go to the best school of their city. These days, the school bag is heavier
than the student himself. Moreover, considering the standards of education and
competition today, after the school, they have to go to private coaching too. Thus
they are left with no time to relax or engage in enjoyable outdoor activities.
Then comes the social and commercial pressures on children today. The situation
becomes perilous when children want to adopt the global culture despite the fact
that their parents want them to stay rooted in their own culture. This in turn leads
the children to rebel against the rules laid down by their respective family. In
addition to this the commercial pressures have a major impact on the minds of
today’s children. It stresses them out when they cannot compete with their peers in
terms of material possessions. For example, a child will undoubtedly want a
mobile phone that is as good or even better than that of his friend.
To sum up, we cannot deny that today’s children are facing more pressures from
academic, social and commercial perspectives. However, to avoid the same,
Parents should have realistic expectations from their child. And most importantly
they should spend adequate time with their children. The greatest onus is on the
schools and teachers. They should not teach to win at all cost. They should in fact
make a student learn how to win with modesty and lose with grace. Both parents
and schools should learn and allow children to bloom by bringing out their hidden
talent. It in turn will make a child grow physically and psychologically.
35.Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on
everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a
society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe
that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
According to some people, children should be allowed to decide what they should
eat, wear or watch. However, others opine that if children have the freedom to
make their own choices, they will grow up into selfish individuals. In my opinion,
children should definitely have the liberty to make their own decisions; however,
since they are too young to understand what is good or bad for them, parents
should help them make the right decisions.
It is important for a child to learn how to make decisions regarding his lifestyle or
future career as decision making is an important skill for success in life. When he
is allowed to make his own choices he will learn to take the responsibility for his
actions. This is another skill required for success. Needless to say, a child who
takes small decisions right from his childhood can deal with the conflicts and
challenges in life more efficiently.
On the contrary, when children have total freedom to make their own choices, they
may fail to consider the feelings of others. For example, a child may insist that he
should be able to watch cartoon whenever he wants to. He may not consider what
other members of the family want to watch on TV. If his parents allow him to have
his way all the way, he will definitely grow into a selfish person who does not care
for others. It is, therefore, important for parents to set the limits of the freedom
their children can have.
In conclusion, I believe that even though children should be allowed to make their
own choices, parents should teach them to respect the feelings of others; otherwise,
they may end up becoming selfish.
36.In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums
of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities.
Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Write at least 250 words.
People, in some countries, prefer to have a fast and extensive rail communication
while others think that improving the existing road transportation system is far
more important and that is why more budget should be spent on roads. This essay
discusses both views and includes my opinion before drawing a reasonable
conclusion.
On the one hand, people in favour of having a speedy and reliable train
communication system mainly base their ground on the fact that trains can carry a
great number of passengers and goods at a time and can remarkably reduce the
traffic congestion. Rail communication is safer, faster and can connect cities and
towns that build a better communication system than the conventional road
transport system, according to these people. Furthermore, locomotives are already
famous in many countries and have greatly improved communications there. Due
to such advantages, people often opine that more money should be allocated for
constructing new train lines. For instance, train system in China has a
groundbreaking contribution to improving its overall communication system and
many countries have started adopting this model.
On the other hand, public transport system plays an essential role for
interconnecting the different parts of the cities and the highest percentage of people
use this system to travel to different places. Though trains can improve the city
transport facilities, it is not an alternative to the existing road transports. That is
why many people believe that national budget should be utilised on improving the
public transport for the sake of the better communication for mass people. For
instance, train line in the UK has always contributed to a great extent to the overall
transport system in the country. Nevertheless, the public transport has always been
the main commuting mode for the UK citizens.
The overwhelming expense is the main problem for anyone who moves to a city
from a rural area or a small town. The cost of education, treatment, house rent,
food and daily commodities are far higher in a city. Pollution in cities is the second
most severe issue and it makes metropolitan areas less suitable for children to grow
up. People in big cities live in a contaminated area where the CO2 emission, the
presence of carbon and other toxic elements in the air is higher. Another drawback
of living in a city is the social classification and gap between rich and poor. Social
discriminations in city areas are far higher than the other parts of the country.
Moreover, people in small towns and villages have a great bonding and they know
each other very well, which is quite the opposite in a city. Moreover, municipal life
is full of competition and it makes people’s life miserable. Someone has to
compete to get in a public car, wait for his turn to meet the doctor, wait several
hours in the traffic jam and fight really hard to get a decent job. The competition is
so high that even a child has to go through a tough fight to be accepted in a school.
I believe there are many steps that a government can take to tackle these issues.
Firstly, the government should control the prices of the daily commodities and
build more high rising buildings to reduce the house rent. More public buses with
better facilities should be introduced to reduce traffic jam. Decentralisation and the
development of the provincial towns would let the authorities shift many industries
to these regions and thus reduce the pressure on the cities and metropolitan areas.
Famous people such as movie or sports stars can be a role model for the young
people of a society. Idealising and treating them as their idol can help them to
achieve their required goal in life. Following their footprints can result in exploring
their own talent which can further showcase marvels and brilliance. Their
creativity, innovation and display of their skills and abilities inspire adolescents to
bring change in their life for good. For instance, legendary Amir Khan, the famous
Bollywood celebrity, is known for his inspirational and creative movies but not for
his wealth or attractive personality. Adolescents copying his qualities and attributes
have promoted strong moral and ethical values in a society.
On the contrary, few people believe that following superstars and famous people
displaying negativity can mislead young people of our society. Proponents of this
viewpoint believe that inspiring from their negative roles and displaying the same
act at home or in streets can have a severe impact on the society. Moreover,
celebrities are often found in smoking advertisements, charged with drugs and
other criminal activities, youth following their path can result in the destruction of
ethical values of a society. For instance, Sanjay Dutt, Bollywood Actor is well
known for his money and roles as a villain, his terrorist acts in different movies
have given rise to violence and crime in streets of Mumbai, all these were
committed by adolescents for thrill and adventure.
The above leads us to deduct that if this movement of preserving our environment
is a collaborative effort by the government and general public we stand a better
chance of being successful. The government should provide the legal infrastructure
to control the natural instinct of profiteering of all investment institutions; with
this, the individual efforts could start making the difference. Continuing the above
example if an individual member of the society notices that same happening in his
or her surroundings, he or she can call on an implementation agency that would
tackle the factory emitting hazardous gases and dumping dangerous materials.
Examples of these implementation agencies include Environment control desk in
the city office, environmental inspectors who randomly visit such factories and are
empowered under the law to impose a fine or completely seal the production
facility found in violation of the rules.
49.In many countries people tend to move overseas or move to a different part of
their country after their retirement. Discuss why they do so and what the outcome
of this situation is. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
50.Recent surveys show increased interest in relocation and travel to other
countries. What may be the reasons for this trend, and what will be the possible
outcome from this behavior? Provide examples for your opinion.
