Gypsum Dewatering System Writeup

The document discusses the gypsum dewatering system used in flue gas desulphurization applications. Gypsum slurry produced in the absorber bottom tank undergoes a two-stage dewatering process using primary hydro-cyclones followed by vacuum belt filters. Vacuum belt filters are selected to provide continuous operation and the desired gypsum output. Two vacuum belt filters are typically provided, one operating and one standby, each sized to handle 10% more than the maximum gypsum output of the plant. The filters remove 90% of water from the 45% gypsum slurry, producing a 90% solids cake with less than 10% moisture that is sent for storage.

Write-up on Gypsum Dewatering System:

In the Wet Limestone Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) application, gypsum is

produced as by product in the Absorber bottom tank which needs to be taken off for
dewatering for maintaining proper slurry concentration. This dewatering process of
gypsum slurry governs the overall functioning of FGD and needs to be maintained
throughout the operation of FGD.

1st stage dewatering happens in the primary hydro-cyclone. Vacuum belt filter is the 2nd
stage dewatering equipment where cake formation of gypsum solids take place.
Vacuum Belt Filters therefore needs to be selected properly for continuous operation
and for desired Gypsum output.

Typically, two (02) nos. of Vacuum Belt Filters- (1 Working+1 Stand by) are provided
for the station. Each Vacuum belt filter is sized generally keeping 10% additional
margin above the maximum gypsum output of the plant at design point.

45% gypsum slurry produced from primary hydro cyclone underflow is fed to the
vacuum belt filter. 90% of water is separated out in vacuum belt filter with the help of
vacuum pump. 90%wt solids with less than 10% moisture in the form of cake will be
discharged from belt filter cloth. Gypsum discharged will be transported to gypsum
storage shed. Filtrate water from belt filter is recycled back to absorber via filtrate water
tank.

Vacuum Belt filters are designed considering the design Limestone analysis –CaCO3 of
specified purity for the worst operating condition (design point condition) at which
maximum SO2 (Kg/hr) is to be absorbed to achieve desired SO2 removal efficiency.
