Int GCSE Turkish 4TU0
Overall almost all candidates have attempted to answer all the sections.
Candidates with high scores clearly made excellent preparation for this exam.
Overall large proportions of the candidates were able linguists and performed
well in this year’s paper. In general the questions were accessible to all
candidates. Many candidates performed very well and scored high marks.
Question 1:
All candidates attempted to answer all parts of question 1. Generally most
attempts were to a very high standard. It needs to be recognised that there
were limited number of candidates whom struggled in sub-sections. In order to
improve performance in this section, candidates should be able translate the
given text with correct key terminology and tense.
Question 2:
Almost all candidates responded to this question. A large number of candidates
were successful in their attempt. Successful candidates managed to transfer the
message in correct tense structure, used many of the correct key terminology
and key information. Candidates must remember that in order to be able to score
top band marks in Quality of Language, they must transfer all the key
terminology correctly in right tenses throughout their translation. It is important
that centres and tutors to continue encouraging all candidates to read widely and
follow the news in order to be able to give them a better prospect in the
examinations.
Question 3:
Overall large number of candidates attempted to complete this section. The
candidates with a better command of both English and Turkish languages scored
top band marks. In order to be able improve future performance in this section;
candidates should transfer the key concepts, terms, name of places accurately.
Candidates should be encouraged to plan before beginning the translation.
Alongside a proper planning it is highly advisable that candidiates consider how
much time they should spend on this question. Quality of Language can be
improved by observing the correct use of tense, vocabuilary and grammar.
Candidates can improve their scores by reading variety of texts including
newspapers in Turkish.
Question 4:
All candidates attempted to answer a question in this section. Many candidates
scored high in this question due to their excellent command of grammar and
large repertoire of vocabulary in Turkish language. Overall quality of language
was impressive in this section. Candidates should be encouraged to develop
their answers by using related examples and well thought out justification points.
Candidates should be aware that they are being marked on their native language
and the expectations are considerably higher in this section.
Section A was the second most popular answer in this section. The overall
performance was very strong and most candidates scored high. The best answers
were developed ones which contained many reasons and justifications about the
place they live. Candidates should avoid writing only about the history and
geography of the place but should include their personal experiences in a well
thought out and developed manner.
Most candidates chose to answer the question about their future plans. Overall
responses were strong in part B. Candidates could have performed even better if
they were to give more points of views and develop these views with reasons
and justifications. Centres should encourage candidates to reflect on their points
of view. Once again avoid just stating the obvious and use your imagination to
demonstrate their language ability.
Part C was by far the least popular choice in this section. Candidates avoided
writing about their views on the world peace. Centres and tutors must
encourage their students to research and have view point on the international
world events.
The number of candidates who responded to Section D was very close to those
who answered Section A. Candidates clearly enjoyed writing about a holiday.
Candidates should bear in mind that quality of language and usage of variety of
vocabulary is crucial in this type of question. They should develop their answers
by using imaginative ways of showing their language ability.
