During his visit to Cagayan De Oro, President Duterte wondered why rape was taken out of
the Death Penalty law when he noted that rape was one of the most heinous crimes that
should merit the heaviest penalty. "I really would like to know the rationale of Congress…
why is it that rape was taken out," Duterte said.
Not only rape, but plunder, treason, murder and more was taken out. There were 21 crimes
included in the death penalty law but was reduced to four and then limited only to drug
related crimes, while this may seem unfair the congress has their reasons.
According to chair Rep. Reynaldo Umali said the inclusion of only drug-related crimes on
the list punishable by death made it easier to pass the death penalty bill.
Although, they have their political reason we can’t help but to worry about the removal of
this other heinous crimes, murder for instance, I agree to some anti-death penalty
oppositions that not all criminals deserves to die, . I do not advocate death penalty for
everybody, some criminals commit a crime because they have no other option to survive,
but some do it for fun. A person, who stole bread from a grocery store, definitely does not
deserve death penalty. However, a serial killer, who kills people for fun or for his personal
gain, definitely deserves death penalty. Death penalty should continue in order to eliminate
the garbage of our society. Not everybody deserves to die, but some people definitely do.
Murder and rape should not be taken out of the death penalty law, I don’t see the point of
taking it out (regarding of political reasons), in other countries there is a death penalty to
rape offenders but in the Philippines it seems that we are taking rape crimes very lightly to
some point we even blame the victims of rape, “that’s what you get for wearing shorts” or
“That’s’ what you get for not coming home early”. Whatever their story is Rape is Rape.
Probably one of the reason crime is rampant in the Philippines is because of this mentality,
we are taking some heinous crimes lightly and putting the blame on victims, plunder is
another thing. What is worse than killing one person? Its killing hundreds and thousands of
people, corruption can be a one major factor of the poverty in the Philippines, poverty that
leads to criminal offenses.
I’m not saying that we should kill all criminals, but those people who have no social
purpose do not benefit society, culture of mankind, or the basic rules of humanity. When
are they going to learn to resume the responsibility for their actions? I am not saying that
all drug-users and killers should be subject to death penalty because they are no good to
the society. However, some people pose a great fatal danger to the society in such a cruel
way. In such cases, death penalty becomes crucial for the benefit of the society. I believe
every criminal, no matter how cruel he is, should be given at least one chance to change
himself/herself. Thus, I do not advocate death penalty for people who have performed only
one murder. However, there have been cases in which people have committed several
murders (e.g., serial killers), or have committed crime even after imprisonment. For such
people, I advocate death penalty.
Limiting the death penalty law for drug related crimes only seems unfair, because there are
other crimes that are as equal and more to drug related crimes. The capital punishment for
death penalty should not be limited to drug related crimes only.
