Phan: Nice to meet you, Mo Montoya. Are you in my English class?
Mariano: I don’t know. What’s the name of your English teacher?
Phan: His name is Mr. Brenner. He’s in Room 220.
Mariano: Mr. Brenner? No, I’m not in your English class. I’m in Room 210. My
teacher’s name is Ms. Sikes.
Phan: Ms. Sikes? My friend Paul is in her class. He’s a soccer player.
Mariano: I’m a soccer player, too. (Bell rings)
Phan: Bye! Nice to meet you, Mo.
Mariano: Nice to meet you, too.

Barbara: Hi, I’m Barbara. What’s your name?
Gustafo: I’m Gustafo. Do you live here in Texas?
Barbara: No, I live in Philadelphia. I’m here on vacation. Where are you from?
Gustafo: My family is from Brazil. But we live in the United States now.
Barbara: Really? My mother is from Brazil. My father is French.
Gustafo: That’s interesting. My father is half French and half British. We live in
Austin.
Barbara: Where’s Austin? It’s here in Texas, right?
Gustafo: Yes, it is. Austin is the capital of Texas.
Barbara: So what’s it like in Austin?
Gustafo: It’s very clean and boring. Not like Philadelphia.
Barbara: Philadelphia is crowded and noisy. But it’s also beautiful. And
interesting.

Chico: Hi, my name is Chico. I need a new camera.
Salesperson: What kind of camera?
Chico: Digital. A digital camera. An expensive one, with all of the gadgets.
Salesperson: Here’s a digital camera for $4000.
Chico: Wow, that’s really cool! But $4000? That’s too expensive.
Salesperson: How about this digital camera? It costs $89.
Chico: Eighty-nine dollars! That’s too cheap!
Salesperson: Excuse me. What is this camera for?
Chico: It’s for pictures of my sister. She plays golf.
Salesperson: That’s an unusual reason to buy a camera. How about this XR-52? It’s
an excellent camera for $249.
Chico: That’s great. Thank you so much.
Salesperson: My pleasure.

Mindy: Hey Yusef! What are you doing here?
Yusef: I’m taking a study break. How are you doing, Mindy?
Mindy: I’m okay. I’m eating pizza and talking on the phone with Brianna.
We’re studying for the history test together.
Yusef: That’s interesting.
Mindy: What’s interesting, the history test?
Yusef: No, the pizza. What kind is it?
Mindy: Mushroom.
Yusef: Mushroom – my favorite! Where is it?
Mindy: It’s in the kitchen. I’m heating it up. Want some?
Yusef: Yeah, thanks. That sounds great.

Billy: Hey, Sasha. What’s up?
Sasha: Hi Billy. Do you want to go to the cafe for a sandwich?
Billy: That sounds great, Sasha – but I’m cooking dinner for my mother and
father.
Sasha: How nice. What are you making?
Billy: I’m making French food.
Sasha: Are your parents French?
Billy: No, they’re Italian. But they love French food. So I’m making a dinner
for them.
Sasha: Do you know how to make French food, Billy?
Billy: Not really – but I have this great French cookbook. It tells how to do
everything.
Sasha: So what are you making?
Billy: I’m making fish soup with tomatoes and garlic.
Sasha: That sounds excellent.

My name is Bianca. I’m from Spain. I live in the United States, in North Carolina. I’m
divorced. I have two children. My son Edgardo is twelve. He lives with his father in
Arizona. My daughter Jennifer lives with me. My new husband’s name is Chuck.
Chuck lives with us in North Carolina.

Robbie: What’s this? There’s no one here! Where’s the parade?
Belinda: I don’t know. What time is it?
Robbie: It’s twelve noon. The parade starts in five minutes.
Belinda: So where are all the people?
Robbie: I don’t know. Are you sure this parade really starts at 12:05?
Belinda: Look here. It says May Day Parade. Saturday, May 1. Twelve-oh-five.
Robbie: Are you sure this is the right address?
Belinda: Yes, it says the parade starts at 300 Main Street. This is 300 Main
Street.
Robbie: I know that. Look at this: Saturday.
Belinda: So, what’s wrong with Saturday?
Robbie: But today is Sunday!
Belinda: Oh no!
Robbie: Oh yes!
Belinda: Let’s go home!

Track 8:
Intro, Unit 8, Listening
Every year in France people celebrate Bastille Day. On Bastille Day, the French
celebrate France as a free and independent country with no king or queen. The first
Bastille Day was on July 14, 1789. Today, people celebrate Bastille Day every year on
July 14th. The celebrations start early in the day. July is warm in France. People stay
outside in the nice weather. People eat, drink, and dance in the streets, singing a
special song called “La Marseillaise.”

Intro, Unit 9, Listening
Rina: How’s it going, Margo?
Margo: Not so great, Rina.
Rina: What’s wrong?
Margo: I’m tired. I always work during the week and then I do housework on
the weekends.
Rina: What do you mean? Doesn’t your husband help? He sometimes does
the shopping, right?
Margo: Yes, he often does the grocery shopping. But I always cook dinner, I
always make the beds, I always wash the dishes, and I always do the
laundry.
Rina: Oh, I see. Does he make a lot of money?
Margo: We both make money, but he makes the most money.
Rina: Are you angry?
Margo: Sometimes. But sometimes he makes me breakfast and then I’m
happy.


Track 10:
Intro, Unit 10, Listening
Jeff: Hi, Rami. What are you doing?
Rami: Hey, Jeff. I am moving to a new apartment.
Jeff: You’re kidding!
Rami: No. I need a place that is quiet. My roommate is too noisy.
Jeff: Are you serious? I always thought Mac was quiet.
Rami: No. He has too many friends over.
Jeff: Are you going to live alone in a one-bedroom apartment?
Rami: No. They are too expensive.
Jeff: Really? How much are they?
Rami: They cost $1300 a month
Jeff: For real? That’s too much! What will you do?
Rami: I found a two-bedroom apartment. I need a new roommate.
Jeff: Really?
Rami: Yes. Are you interested, Jeff?
Jeff: No, thanks. I like my one-bedroom apartment.

Erin: Look at those cool shoes, Rick. They’re just right for your sister.
Rick: You think so?
Erin: Oh yeah. And how about this beautiful scarf for my mom? She loves
the color green.
Rick: Hmm, I don’t know. What about you, Erin? You always shop for other
people. But you never shop for yourself.
Erin: That’s not true.
Rick: Yes it is. Think – when do you buy things for yourself?
Erin: What about these jeans?
Rick: Those are almost a year old!
Erin: Wow, Rick. You’re right. Let’s go shopping – for me!

Track 12:
Intro, Unit 12, Listening.
Max: Hello, Ms. Yamada. I’m Max Morales. I’m here for the part-time graphic
artist job.
Ms. Yamada: Hi, Max. Tell me about yourself.
Max: Well, I’m a student at Syracuse University in fine arts.
Ms. Yamada: Do you have any job experience in the arts?
Max: Not really. I do graphic layout for the university newspaper. I also do
cartoons. I have a show of my cartoon drawings at the campus art
gallery. It’s multimedia, with video and music.
Ms. Yamada: Interesting. Do you have any samples of your work?
Max: I have some cartoons from the university paper. Here, take a look.
Ms. Yamada: These are good. These are very good. Very funny and creative.
Max: Do you think you have a job for me?
Ms. Yamada: Let’s see how things go.
