Introduction

Polo is a game which is not played by common people. It is played


on horseback as the player strikes the ball with the mallet. This
is a fast and furious game and rightly called as the king of
games.

Summary
Polo is known as the game of kings. It is some 2500 years old
game. Polo is a game that made Mongols the great nation with
brave horsemen. This game develops stout heart, skills of
coordination of eye and hand. This game was first played in
central Asia then spread to Iran and finally matured in Northern
areas.
Polo was considered as the game of aristocrats which trained the
princess and the warriors of Japan, China and India.

The king Darius,Genghis Khan,and Alexander the great are the


heroes all over the world who liked to play polo.

In India, it was patronised by kings.Sultan Qutubdin Aibek died


of this game. In Mughal rule polo was the national game of the
sub-continent until 16th century.Rajputs also were fascinated by
this game.
The 18th century saw a decline of this game in India but the
mountainous enclaves of the subcontinent like
Gilgit,Ladakh,Manipur and Baltistan still are the hosts of this
furious game.
There are many legends that narrate the story of Polo in Ladakh.
It is said that in 6th century Jamyang Namgyal the king of
Ladakh married Gyal Khatoon from Baltistan and this event
introduced the polo in Ladakh.Some claim that it came to
Chushot first where even today on 21st of March Polo is played to
celebrate Nauroz.In Ladakh Polo has become a common game. In
17th century Sengge Namgyal the king of Ladakh laid the first
royal polo ground in Murtse Garden. Polo is now a part of
cultural heritage of Ladakh. It is a fast and furious game a test of
human endurance,skills,and horse strength to play continuously.
The matches are played in late afternoon.
Polo is different in Ladakh is compared to its international
format. There are six players in each team and the duration is
one hour with ten-minutes break. It has two rounds of twenty
minutes each with few minutes break. The game continues till
either of the team scores nine goals. After a goal each team both
the ends change automatically. The scorer is honoured to patch
up the ball.
The game begins with the music of surna and daman. Music is
played at the beginning, end and scoring of each goal. The music
varies as per the progress in the game particularly the volume is
high at the moment of scoring a goal. Since 1970 exhibitions and
tournaments of polo are held in Ladakh as an integral part of its
culture.
