Activity on water pollution

1. Which of the following are sometimes considered pollutants if found in water? (Place an "x in front
of those that are).
__ x __ammonia __ x __nitrates __ x __chromium
__ x __chlorides __ x __copper __ x __silica
__ x __iron __ x __carbon dioxide __ x __lead
__ x __sulfides __ x __phosphates __ x __cyanide
2. Name one possible source of excess nitrogen in a body of surface water. One common source of
excess nitrogen is manure/fertilizers used to grow crops.
3. What could be a possible source of sulfates found in a supply of drinking water? Remnants of
mining activities like sulfate can seep into the groundwater.
4. What is one possible result of a low amount of dissolved oxygen in body of surface water? The lack
of dissolved oxygen can lead to the proliferation or growth of anaerobic bacteria.
5. In a body of surface water polluted with chromium, where would the chromium be located? Why
would it be located there? Chromium is known to be a heavy metal, so it is natural for me to assume
that it would sink at the bottom covered in sediment.
6. Classify each of the following as a "point source" or "non-point source" of pollution by placing a "p"
or "np" in the blank provided.
__p__outflow pipe from a factory emptying wastes into a stream
__np__snow melt carrying dissolved solids into a river
__np__excess pesticide carried by rainfall into an irrigation ditch
__p__hot water from a nuclear cooling system being dumped into a river
7. Classify each of the following pollutants as organic, inorganic, toxic, or thermal by placing an "o", "i",
"t", or "th" on the blank provided.
__i__sodium chloride from urban streets where it was used to melt ice
__th__hot water from a nuclear cooling system
__i__suspended clay from agricultural run-off
__o__nitrogen resulting frombreakdown of manure dumped in a pond
__t__lead from mining operations dumped in water
__t__insecticide from agricultural run-off
8. Define water pollution. Water pollution is the decrease of productivity of the water due to its
contamination caused by increase of substances.

Activity on ocean acidification

Answer the following sets of question after watching Triona McGrath on ocean acidification-the evil twin
of climate change
Questions:
1. How important is the ocean in our daily life?
The ocean provides half the air we breathe, moderate our climate, and provide jobs, medicine
and food including 20% protein to feed the entire world population.

2. How much of the Earth is covered by the ocean? More than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface.
3. What does the ocean do for us? The ocean generates half the air we breathe, absorb carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce the impacts of climate change.

4. What percentage of protein to feed the population is provided by the ocean? 20%

5. How much CO2 have the oceans absorbed? 25% emitted by human activities

6. What is ocean acidification? The evil twin of climate change: On-going decrease of PH levels in
the ocean due to the increase CO2 uptake.

7. What is the relationship between CO2 in the ocean and the ocean pH? Dissolved CO2 in the o
decreases the Seawater PH hence the reduction of carbonate ions.

8. Why should we care about ocean acidification? Can cause mass extinction of various marine
species and can drastically change the food chain/food system.

9. What is the predicted increase in ocean acidity by the end of this century? 170% by 2100

10. What is the risk for coral reefs? Lack of carbonate ions and increase in ocean acidity can result to
their coral structure being dissolved.

11. How can we slow this down and prevent the worst scenario? By reducing carbon dioxide
emissions
