QUESTIONS FOR PART 3 – TOPIC: TRANSPORTATION

How to encourage more people to take public transportation?

Encouraging the public to make use of the public transit is quite a tough task as the
facilities and infrastructures are not developed So with a view to achieving that, there
should be an increase in the number of public means of transport like buses, trains, and
subways with better service quality so that the general population feels worth it to leave
their motorbike or car at home and make daily commutes by public transport. In
addition, government should run more awareness raising campaigns to educate people
about the importance of conserving the environment via small actions such as taking
public transport. Posters can be stuck on electrical poles on the streets, or banners
should be hung outside buildings, for example.

Causes and contributing factors of traffic congestion:

Traffic congestion is caused by different factors; bad weather, poor signal timing, car
accidents, inadequate roadway capacity, insufficient number of roads. Substandard
road conditions, and increased number of cars; roads and transport services suffer
when they are overused. Urban sprawl and unplanned urban growth contribute to the
traffic congestion of large cities.

What measures should the government take to solve transportation problems in

traveling?

The government can do a lot to solve traffic problems. For example, better educations
of the citizens to follow traffic rules, more provision of public transportation facilities,
such as buses and underground railways, as well as broadening the roads or building
skyways, can all contribute to the alleviation of traffic problems.

Other suggestions to reduce traffic:

To apply automated traffic management systems, to improve public transport systems,

to encourage people to use more public transport, to provide carpooling facilities, to
establish car sharing schemes, to ease traffic jams through radio reports, to impose
vehicle emission laws: a regulatory system planned to limit the number of cars on the
roads could be introduced, to ban private cars front entering certain areas of the city , to
increase the number of roads, to provide a safe network of walking and cycling routes.

What types public transport can be found in your country?

Obviously, there’s quite a mixed variety of public transport in my country. When we
travel on the roads, it’s easy to find mass of buses, taxis, or even trains. If someone
wants to have an outbound trip, plane is crucial. However, the most commonly-used
would potentially be buses, since they are so cheap and reliable.

Why types of public transport do you use most?

As far as I’m concerned, I take buses more often than any other means of transport.
That might be due to the fact that I am liable to carsickness buses aren’t so stuffy.
Moreover, bus wouldn’t set me back because with only 200,000 dong for a monthly
commutation ticket. I could commute to work every day without any anxiety.

Are there any public transport problems in your country?

With an increase of private cars in my country, during the rush hour there are always
jam-packed kind people often go bananas due to this, the road quality, furthermore, is
too run-down to meets the needs of the overwhelming vehicular traffics. This might
leads to the increase in drastic crack-ups recently.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topic – Describe a trip that

you went on by public transportation
Posted on January 7, 2019 by admin

Describe a trip that you went on by public transportation

You should say:

 When and where you went

 Why you took the trip
 What you did and saw on the trip
 And explain how you feel about the trip

Band 8 Model Answer

Frankly speaking, I’m not a fan of public transport, so I haven’t been on many journeys
by bus. train or taxi up to now. However, out of those I have taken, the most pleasant
experience was when I travelled on a package tour to X – only within a 50-kilometer
drive front my house. It was a small tour and we travelled in a bus as the travel agency
owns a public transport corporation.

Off the top off my head, the tour was quite reasonably priced, at $100 for merely 2 days
as it promised luxurious accommodation and tasty foods. So you see, I just went for it
without second thought as it was exactly, what I would expect. The first part of the
journey was good enough for me because it took us not much time to reach the
destination. Besides, I did get chances to engage in any gossip with other passengers
and the trip just went by with a lot of fun. Travelling by bus like this for long distance was
an experience I hadn’t had before, as the bus condition was good and the service was
decent.

The moment we checked in a hotel near the beach, I was really glad that the quality of
the room was up to standard. The bed was pretty comfortable and the air-conditioner
worked extremely well. Regarding the swimming and the seafood, the weather then was
so sunny for sunbathing and I felt like jumping my feet into the seawater. To add it to the
fun, because we travelled during off season, the seafood was very cheap. This is the
bus tour that left me with most profound memories, I also take pride in protecting the
environment as well.

Sample Answer 1:
Taking trips to all kinds of places is a part of our daily life, whether we travel
in our private vehicles or use some kind of public transportation. Of course,
as far as I am concerned, I am more comfortable to take my trips on my
motorbike when I am travelling short distances. But, when I travel long
distances, I usually use public transportation, and today I would like to talk
about one such long-distance trips which I took about a few weeks ago.
Anyway, I took the trip to attend a wedding ceremony of one of my cousins
who lives about a couple of kilometres away from me in another city. Since it
was a long trip, I naturally wanted to use public transportation except, of
course, I just couldn’t decide on whether to use a public bus or public train.
Buses travel usually faster than train in my country but they don’t usually
provide an opportunity to freshen up or eat any kind of food or snacks during
the journey. But, on the other hands, even though, trains run a bit slow, they
all offer the opportunity for refreshment. In fact, all of the public trains in my
country have canteens to offer food for the travellers, and of course, they also
have washrooms to freshen up.

So, after considering the pros and cons of using both types of public
transportation, I finally decided to make my trip on a public train. Of course,
it took me a little longer to arrive at my destination with train, but the trip was
comfortable, and relaxing, especially, because of playing some “classical and
hit songs” throughout the entire journey.

Anyway, I chose to use public transportation, primarily because it provided

more safety and security in my travel. In fact, I didn’t have to worry about
getting involved in any kind of unfortunate event or accident. Besides, I
found travelling by train more comfortable and relaxing because it provided a
much larger space to manoeuvre around when I needed to stretch a little.
Finally, I never felt any travel fatigue after arriving at my destination.

Sample Answer 2:
Though I own a car, I often use public transportation. I do so to allow other
family members to use my car for their own important tasks and sometimes I
use public transportation, like the bus, to travel a long distance, especially to
a different city. Some of the remote areas are not quite as easy to travel by
cars and for those places, I use public transportation like the rickshaw, taxi or
the rented motorbike. One such trip that I remember I took 2 years ago when
I visited one of my aunts’ house. My aunt was married to a civil engineer and
they had 3 kids. Their living place was kind of a remote area and took almost
10-12 hours to reach. It was the mid-autumn when I had the trip and I alone
went there. I had to use 3-4 different public transportation to finally reach my
aunt’s house.

I took a bus and it stopped when we reached near a river after 4-5 hours
journey. I had to use a boat to pass the river and after that, I took another bus
and finally an auto-rickshaw to reach my aunt’s living place.

The trip was a long one and it was neither a very pleasant journey nor a very
disturbing one as well. Changing the transportation a few times, carrying two
such heavy bags was something that annoyed me. But I enjoyed the natural
scenery, a different routine than the usual busy life, scenic beauty on both
sides of the road, the beautiful river and the new people and place. I mostly
listened to music from my MP3 player and read a magazine on my journey
and I enjoyed that also.

I took public transportation mainly for 3 reasons. Firstly, I left it home so that
other family members can use it if needed as I would be away for about a
week. Secondly, I did not know the exact route to the place I travelled and
that’s why it would have been a bit uncertain to take my private car to a route
that I have no idea about. Finally, it was a remote area and taking my car
would have caused extra tension like parking it, fueling it and that why I
preferred to take the journey in public transportation.

Sample Answer 3:
Well, every day I go to college in public transport. According to me, public
transportation is safe for long journeys as well as for short visits. But here I
would like to talk about a visit which I made via a bus. I explain it briefly.
About two months ago, I had made a plan to go to the Golden Temple
Amritsar with my two friends. We decided to travel via bus.

According to our plan, we reached the bus station in my hometown Moga. On

the bus station, We bought eatable things and beverages to drink. We took a
bus in which only a few people were traveling. During this journey, We sit on
the same seat on the bus. We shared many views with each other. My one
friend who was traveling with us is a very talkative person. He makes each
and every moment memorable with his funny and captivating talk. He was
doing funny activities on the bus. After some time, When the bus conductor
came near to seat, then we got a ticket from him.

When one hour passed during the journey, we ate the food which we carried
with us.
Then, we reached the city of Amritsar after one hour. We went out of the bus
and took a cab to reach GoldenTemple. We went in just ten minutes. We did
supplication over there for the goodness of our loving families.

Moreover, I prayed to God for the strong relationship between us three

friends. After prayer, we came back to the bus station and took the bus to
reach home.
Eventually, till the evening, we came back to my hometown. So, that was the
time when I went with my friend by bus.

Sample Answer 4:
In our daytoday life we visit many places for various purposes. Sometimes
we use our own vehicle and sometimes we use public transport. Normally
when I have to go somewhere near then I use car but for distant places I use
public transport. Here I am going to talk about a visit for which I used public
transport. Actually, last month, I went to Jaipur Rajasthan with my family.
This time we used bus for going to Jaipur. There is a tour operator company
near my hometown known as Express Travels.

My father booked this tour through them. There were 12 other families with
us. It was vacation time and so children were also there with their parents.
We boarded the bus at 7 am. On the way we enjoyed a lot. I made many
friends and we played antakshri.
The bus made three halts on the way to Jaipur. We straightened our legs and
had refreshments at those stops. The bus was an AC coach and was very
comfortable. There was also an LCD in the bus and we saw the movie Sargi.
We reached Jaipur at 7 pm. We stayed at hotel Gangaur which was a very
nice hotel. We saw the Amer Fort, Hawa Mahal, The City Palace and many
other places. One whole day we had reserved for shopping.

My mother bought some Jaipuri quilts and I bought some lakh jewellery. As
it was a package holiday, we enjoyed with the other families and made many
friends. I still have good friends from that trip and we are in touch with each
other through facebook.

Sample Answer
What measures could be taken to reduce problems of congestion in cities?

There are many ways that congestion could be reduced in big cities. In my city, for example, they have
introduced a bike rental system where members can pick up a bike at one point and drop it off at another.
It’s proving to be very popular and as a result more cycle lanes are also being provided.

Another example, which unfortunately doesn’t exist in my city, is a park and ride scheme where you leave
your car outside the city in a carpark and then take a free bus into the centre. Another way to prevent
people bringing their cars into the city would be to charge a special fee to access the centre, like they do
in London, though I guess this wouldn’t be quite so popular with the residents.

Task 2: Public Transport and Cars

by Sui
The rising levels of congestion and air pollution found in most of the world cities
can be attributed directly to the rapidly increasing number of private cars in use.
In order to reverse this decline in the quality of life in cities, attempts must be
made to encourage people to use their cars less and public transport more.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, people use more private car, which leads to more cars on the road, heavy traffic jam
and air pollution. These problems always happen especially in the cities. I agree with the way to
solve this problem by encourage people to use public transportation instead of using private
cars because it is the best and easy way that people can do.

Using public transportation saves a lot of money. Firstly, people do not have to buy their own
cars. When it comes to prices, the fare for buses or taxis are cheaper than private cars when
compared bus fare to the oil price. Accordingly, people do not have to spend lots of money on
gas that they have to fill the tank. Also, they do not have to find a place for parking as well.

Moreover, using less private cars saves environment and people’s health as well. It causes less
air pollution because carbon dioxide that released from cars is decreased. As all people know
that carbon dioxide can harm people’s health, if less carbon dioxide release to the environment,
people do not have to breathe polluted air inevitably. Furthermore, there will have no heavy
traffic jam because people use more public transportation.

Even though it is a waste of time that people have to wait for a buses, taxis, subway or sky train,
it will not take people a long time to reach their destination because public transportation
nowadays are developed to be faster and more convenient for citizens.

Therefore, these are the reasons why I agree with the way to decrease congestion and air
pollution by encourage people to use less private cars and turn to use more public
transportation that government provided.

IELTS Sample Writing Analysis:

In order to answer this question, you will need to state your opinion, and then give the reasons
why you have this opinion in your body paragraphs.

If you agree that less car use and more use of public transport will improve the quality of life in
cities, then you will need to explain why this is the case.

In other words, you will need to discuss the benefits of using cars less and public transport
more, specifically in relation to improvements in quality of life with regards to pollution and
congestion.

If you disagree then you will need to discuss the disadvantages of this.
Of course there is the option to partly agree and to look at some benefits and drawbacks.

Content

The candidate’s introduction in this IELTS sample writing is satisfactory as they introduce the
topic in the first few sentences and give some background facts about it. They then clearly give
their opinion in the final sentence.

However, their first body paragraph does not really answer the question. Although they correctly
discuss the benefits of public transport, the benefits discussed do not relate to congestion or
pollution.

Instead, the candidate writes about prices and costs. It is important to keep the essay on topic.

"Not having to find a place to park" is relevant, but this is only in the last sentence.

The second body paragraph is better. The candidate discusses how using cars less will improve
people’s health, which is directly relevant to the prompt.

The third paragraph is relevant as the candidate suggests that the speed of public transport will
improve people’s quality of life.

The conclusion then correctly summarizes the candidates point of view.

Organization

It is clear from the candidate's IELTS sample writing that they understand the basics of how to
organize an essay, with an introduction that contains background information and a thesis, body
paragraphs with different points and a conclusion.

However, these can be improved.

You should always try to have one central theme in each paragraph. The topic sentence in body
paragraph one tells us that the paragraph is about how “public transportation saves a lot of
money”, but then the candidate talks about “finding a place to park” in the last sentence. This
does not fit with the topic of the paragraph.

Similarly, in the second body paragraph, it is not quite clear how the last sentence fits with the
topic of the paragraph.

Check all ideas fit with the topic sentence (this is the purpose of planning your answer first), and
avoid placing a new idea in one sentence at the end of the paragraph. All ideas should be fully
explained and one sentence is not usually enough to do this.

Also, ensure all paragraphs are long enough. The third body paragraph is only one sentence.
Three sentences are the minimum length for a paragraph.

Grammar and Vocabulary

The vocabulary in this student's IELTS sample writing is basically adequate to answer the
question and the grammar errors do not cause too much difficulty when reading the essay.

The errors, though, are quite frequent and show that the candidate is proficient at writing but not
at a high level.

For example:

I agree with the way to solve this problem by encourage people to use public transportation

This should be:

I agree that the way to solve this problem is by encouraging people to use public transportation

Other Useful Tips:

For answering the bullet points, you may think of including details as below:

 Type of transport mode: You can also choose any of other public transport modes such as bus,
airplane etc.
 Types of people: You may answer this according to economic conditions such as poor, rich,
middle class etc. or according to groups viz. working professionals, students etc. It can also be answered
according to the aim of travelling, for example, economic class air travel is preferred by businessmen or
bus travel by passengers travelling to the nearby city.
 Convenience: You can answer this in terms of cost involved, ease of booking tickets and comfort
of travelling
 Reason of being popular: It can be answered according to the major benefit provided by the travel
mode, for example, cheap fare in case of train, comfortable seats in bus and fastest way of travelling by
air.

Model Answers:
1. What form of transport do you prefer to use? Why?
Without any doubt, I would say motorbikes. You can see people driving a
motorbike all over the place in my country. Almost everyone travels by
motorbike. The reason why a motorbike is so popular is due to their reasonable
price and convenience. They also extremely varied in terms of size, color and
quality, thus a wide variety of choices is available for everyone.

Vocabulary
Without any doubt/There is no doubt that (expression) a phrase
expressing certainty or agreement; yes

A wide variety of (collocation) a number or range of things of the same

general class that is distinct in character or quality.

2. How often do you take buses?

Almost every day. Since my house is so far away from my university, it’s
impossible for me to travel by motorbike. In addition, the air is heavily polluted
by exhaust fumes and traffic jams always take place, especially during peak
hours. Thus, I’d prefer to take the bus, to save time, save gasoline and causing
less pollution.
Vocabulary
Exhaust fumes (n) waste gasses or air expelled from an engine, turbine, or
another machine in the course of its operation.

Traffic jam (n) a line or lines of stationary or very slow-moving traffic, caused
by roadworks, an accident, or heavy congestion.

Peak hours/Rush hours (n) the busiest hours

3. Can you compare the advantages of planes and trains?

Planes and trains regularly depart and arrive on time. Plus, there are many
convenient facilities catering particularly to certain groups of passengers.
However, travelling by plane is clearly time-saving and enjoyable in terms
of onboard services like meals or comfortable seats, while travelling by train
offers you a chance to see the world outside, admire the views from their
seats. It’s totally a great experience for most train-travellers.

Vocabulary
On-board services (n) provided on or within a vehicle

Cater (v) provide with what is needed or required

4. How much time do you spend travelling on a normal day?

I have to commute from my home to my workplace on a daily basis. It normally
takes me 30 minutes to travel back and forth.

5. Would you ride bikes to work in the future?

Definitely not. Riding a bike means you’re exposing yourself to
the unpredictable weather and to air pollution. What is worse, I’m afraid are
the main streets or the highway which is too dangerous for cyclists, as cars,
motorbikes and buses will travel at a very high speed. Thus I’d rather ride a
motorbike or take the bus instead.
Vocabulary
Unpredictable weather (n) to not able to be predicted; changeable

6. What will become the most popular means of transport in

your country?
I think buses will take the lead. You can travel the distance without much
worries about ticket price or rainy weather outside. Also, new buses now offer
better services like comfortable seats for the elderly or good air conditioning
systems.

Vocabulary
To take the lead (v) to start winning a race or competition

7. Do you prefer public transport or private transport?

I think I’d prefer public transport. It’s much more inexpensive and because it
can contain a large number of people, it helps ease the intensity of traffic jams
during peak hours and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by
vehicles. Private transportation is more costly in terms of fees, taxes and
gasoline.

Vocabulary
Intensity (n) of extreme force, degree, or strength

Greenhouse gas emissions (np) the emission into the earth’s atmosphere of

any of various gases, esp carbon dioxide, that contributes to the greenhouse
effect.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.
Describe a common transportation system for commuters
in your city.
You should say:
 what kind of transport it is
 what types of people use this transport
 how convenient it is
and explain whether you like it or not.

Model Answer 1:
I live in a crowded city, so naturally, there are different types of transportation
systems in it to serve the needs of its residents. So, while people tend to use all
of these transportations at one point or another, depending on their needs as well
as the availability of those transports, one common transportation system, which
commuters in my city use rather frequently, is public and private buses.

Yes, the sight of many public and private buses roaming on the streets and roads
of my crowded city is very common, which starts from the very early morning and
continue with providing commuting services until very late at night. Apparently,
people from all walks of life and professions use this rather common and popular
commuting system because of their hours of availability and comparatively low
fares. In fact, one could get a bus in my city every 10 or 15 minutes, depending
on their travel routes, probably because the demand for these bus services are
not the same all over the city.  Anyway, so if we take the low fares and the high
frequency of availability into consideration, one certainly would be tempted to
consider this common transport system “convenient”. But, if they think about the
issue of their overall travel comfort, they wouldn’t really consider it that
convenient, simply because these buses are too crowded most of the times
where many people have to stand on their feet for a long period of time. Besides,
since these buses have to cover many designated bus stoppages in order to
serve a maximum number of commuters, it usually takes a long period of time for
the commuters to arrive at their destinations.

Anyway, to be fair, I don’t really like this popular and common transportation
system, primarily because it usually costs me a lot of time to arrive at my
destination due to huge traffic problems. Besides, the seats in most of these
buses are not very comfortable for riding unless you are using luxury buses for
your trip. But, then again, I am not really willing to pay so much money to ride
these luxury buses.

Model Answer 2:
Public Bus is a very common transportation system in our country and the
majority of the commuters in cities and urban areas use this transportation
system. There are two types of public bus systems in our country- short distance
buses and long-distance buses. There are many governments owned bus
service system which is available mostly in the metropolitan system. There are
varieties of sizes in these buses ranging from 10 seats to as many as 100 seats
and even double-decker buses as well.
People from all classes and economic conditions use these buses and who do
not own private cars, most of the times use this transportation system. Since
there are cheap and expensive buses based on the facilities allowed, people with
low earnings mostly use non-AC, small buses. While people with better economic
conditions use air-conditioned and a bit expensive service.

This is the most convenient transportation system in our country in terms of

expenses and availability. Hiring a taxi or private cars cost a lot and they are not
always available. So people mostly depend on the public bus transportation
system which offers a very low fare and are always available for almost all of the
destinations.
I mostly use this bus transportation system for short and long-distance travels
and communications and I find it very handy. Though there are some
disadvantages of this transportation system, I would say still this is the best way
for commuters to move to different places in my city.
IELTS Examiner Sample Answer from Cambridge 13:
Transportation (by Dave)
Some people think that governments should invest mainly in making public
transportation faster while other think there are more important priorities (cost,
the environment). Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
While many are of the opinion that the most important factor in public
transport is speed, others value areas such as cost and the
environment. In my opinion, although there are a number of key
considerations, speed is by far the most important.
Two of the most commonly addressed areas of public transport are cost
and the environment. In Vietnam, the quality of the public transport
buses is very low and they produce a lot of air pollution. However, they
are very cheap and this allows the residents who need them the most,
typically students and low-wage earners, to afford them. In an ideal
world the government would have cheap buses that produce little
exhaust, but cost and environmental concerns will always be in conflict.
In developing countries, it makes sense to emphasise the expense of
tickets while developed countries have the wealth and responsibility to
try to better balance these competing policy influences.
Although these are worthwhile considerations, speed of transport
should be the main rationale as it has a trickle down effect on the
economy and quality of life of a country. For example, Japan has a
famously fast and efficient system of railways both inside cities and
connecting provinces within the country. If someone has a family, faster
transport allows them to spend more time with their family both before
and after work. This can enhance the quality of life of working class
people. It also means that they will get to work faster, get more work
done during the day and have more time to recuperate for the next day.
Over years and decades this has hastened Japan’s development into
one of the world’s leading economies.
In my opinion, cost and the environment are crucial for ordinary people
and the future of our planet but speed has a greater effect on people in
both the short and long-term. Governments that focus on faster public
transport will reap the rewards for decades and be able to reinvest that
money in areas like the environment, education, and healthcare.

IELTS Speaking Test Vietnam Part 1

What is your full name?

Elizabeth Thủy Tiên

Can I see your ID?

Here is my passport

Where are you from?

I'm Vietnamese, from here in Hanoi.

Do you work or study?

I'm studying at the moment, my Masters Degree in Business, specializing in Strategic Planning.

Do you live in a house or an apartment?

I still live with my parents in their house, our family house.

Do you like your home?

Yes, I love it. I have so many happy memories growing up there with my brothers and sister.
What will your future house look like?

I really don't know. If I stay here in Vietnem then I suppose I would like to have a traditinal
family home like my parents. But at the moment I'm planning to emigrate to Australia, so I don't
really know what type of house there I would like to get eventually.

What public transport do you normally use?

I use the buses almost every day. It's the best option for me at the moment. Maybe next year, if I
don't go to Australia I will get a car.

Why do you use them?

The buses? because they're cheap and frequent and I can catch one close to my home and it takes
me all the way to the university. I only have to walk maybe one block.

Like I said, buses are convenient. Maybe if I lived out of town or had to go someplece different
to work - then maybe I wouldn't find them so good - but for me at the moment, they are the most
convenient transport.

Do you think people should use public transport more?

Here, lots of poeple use public transport. Many people don't have much choice. I remember when
I spent a year studying abroad in South America, the buses and taxis were very similar to here.

They were cheap and frequent and most people used them. I think it's in western countries where
people use private cars more maybe - and use buses less in the city.

What would you do to improve Hanoi's public transport?

I really don't know. There are a lot of people here in Hanoi, more than six and a half million
people, so of course there is going to be a lot of traffic also.

Maybe, more bus lanes and restrictions would help reduce the volume of traffic. Or more control
of the mototaxis; there are more of them than any other form of transport, but it's really a case of
planning and only the local authorities know what the plans are for the future.

Do you think public transportation is expensive in your city?

No, it's really cheap - well buses are - it's only about 14 cents. Taxis can be expensive if you use
them a lot, or go long distances. But in general, transport is cheap.

What time of the day do you like the most? Why?

I like the evening the best, when I'm at home with my family and relaxing. The air is fresh and
everything is quiet and peaceful.

Because, I love to sit in out garden and look at the sky at night and see the stars sometimes - it's
almost hypnotic I think.

How is the structure of your day now different compared to the past?

I suppose a few years ago when I first started studying I was more relaxed and more social than
now.

Now becasue I'm doing my Masters Degree there is a lot of reading I need to do and I seem to
have much less time for other activities. So I don't go out as often as I used to.

But really, my life hasn't changed much in the last few years, it just feels a little more busy at the
moment than usual. I still live in the same place - see the same poeple - do the same things.

Maybe if I do go to Australia, I will be able to tell you about many changes in the future!

IELTS Speaking Test Vietnam Part 2

Talk about an advertisement which made you want to buy a certain product.

You should say:

 what the product was

 what was shown in the advertisement
 what you liked about the advertisement/product

and explain why the product was important to you.

Sample Answer
Let me tell you about an ad I saw a few weeks ago. It was on the internet and it was advertising a
service to buy and sell gold online. It's something one of my frineds told me about a some time
ago, but I never really though about it seriously after he had told me about it.

The image used in the ad was what caught my attention first. It was an imga of a gold bar, gold
bullion, and it juts looked so beautiful.
I clicked on the ad and it linked me to a website which sold gold. I didn't really know much
about this so I read all the information on the page and they were selling gold bullion, gold coins
and other gold products.

I had no idea that you could buy all these different gold products online and some of them
weren't expensive - well the price varies - but you could buy gold for less than $100 and they
shipped it directly to you.

It seemed like a good idea - everybody loves gold - and I thought it woud be a good investment
for the future. Anyway, I didn't do anything about it at the time, but I did decide to do some more
research about the subject.

Over a week I visited some other websites and read a lot more about buying, selling, and ivesting
in gold. I learned so much and began to get really interested in the topic.

Eventually I decided to buy some gold rounds and coins, simply because I liked the design, and I
learned that the price of gold is relatively low at the moment so it seemed like a good time to
buy.

This was last week, and they delivered my order a couple of days ago. I think Imust have spent
about 20 minutes just looking at these gold items when I first opened them. they were so
beautiful and I had never bought anything gold before in my life so it was like a special moment.

Now, I have a plan to try and buy some more gold every month, little by little. there are some
coins that are really interesting but I also want to buy gold because I think it's a good idea for the
future.

IELTS Speaking Test Vietnam Part 3

Do you think advertising influences people’s choice of products?

Absolutely, a lot of people are very easily manupulated by advertising, everone knows that.
Companies know it and take advantage of it to make moeny.

We all buy things we don't really need sometimes, just because of the marketing or the
advertising which makes us think we need to have or buy a certain product.

There are many products for sale which quite similar, but those companies who tend to spend
more on marketing and advertising sell more of their product than the others, even though the
actual product may be quite similar.
Who shows advertisements in your country?

They're everywhere, on TV, on the internet, on the streets, magazines, I mean - any company
selling a product or service is advertising - maybe they choose to advertise in different places,
but they're all showing ads all over the place.

I guess if you stopped to count them all, you would be counting hundreds of ads every day that
you see just walking around or on TV.

Apart from food and clothing, what products are advertised?

Almost every thing that you can buy has an ad ... you see ads for cars, ads for property, for travel
and vacation. And then there are ads trying to sell services to people. Mobile phone ads are very
popular at the moment, well ads for the mobile network providers really.

What are your views on showing or mentioning children in advertising?

Well, if it's an ad selling things for children then it makes sense. You wouldn't want to see an
adult advertising something for children - it wouldn't seem real - and personally I don't see
anything wrong with children appearing in ads or marketing campaigns.

In fact in some cases the child has gone on to become like a celebrity, which isn't a bad thing
because then they have more opportunitie in life, maybe they can become an actor or something
like that or maybe a TV presenter.

What are some other methods of advertising in your country?

I think we have all the normal methods of advertising here, TV, radio, newspaper and magazines,
then there's the paper leaflets some people hand out in the street, we have internet advertising,
billboards on the street and other advertising activities.

Some of the large car companies here sponsor events, like sports or maybe something similar. I
think the type of comapny, or product, might have something to do with the way they advertise it
or where they advertise it.

In your view, What is the most effective advertising media?

I'm not sure. Doesn't it depend on the product or service that a company is trying to sell? That is
why marketing companies get paid a lot of money - to design the best plan - to reach the right
people.

Maybe there are some products that can be advertised anywhere and be effective, but most have
a preferred media or style of advertising depnding on who they are aimed at. For example, you
wouldn't try and sell cheap products in a high quality magazine or advertise expensive cars in a
poor neighbourhood.

So each company has to decide what kind of product it is they are selling and choose the most
effective channel for their advertising.

Do you think any advertising could be harmful?

No, not really, after all, ads only inform or suggest that something is good and we should buy it.
It's the people who make the decision to buy - or not. I can't imagine how an ad could harm
someone, it doesn't do anything - it's passive.

Sample Answer Band 8:

Describe a trip you went on by public transportation

You should say:

 Where you went

 What means of transportation you took
 Who were with you
 How you felt about the trip
I would like to talk about a trip that I went to by a public transportation a long time ago.
This memory left a lasting impression on me until now.

Though I have my own motorbike, I sometimes use public transportation to commute from

home to workplace. On this day, I went by bus with one of my colleagues because it was
forecasted that it would rain cat and dog in the morning and I didn’t want to get wet.
We departed at 7 a.m and tended to arrive at nearly 8 a.m. I thought choosing to travel by
bus was a smart choice due to several reasons. Initially, in this sprawling city, the traffic
congestion is extremely terrible. In fact, travelling by bus would help you avoid
a tailback  or a  pile – up because we all have the own line for public transportation.
Secondly, sitting on a bus protect you from suffering the gas emission coming from other
traffic, thus, a better health would be created.
To me, this trip was a best choice I’ve ever made in my life. I had a valuable chance to
enjoy the pace of life  of the normal rat race in the city that I often ignored when traveled
by private motorbike. Moreover, I felt safer while sitting on a bus since I didn’t need to care
about speed limit  or  jumping the lights as normal.

All in all, this trip is still fresh in my mind and I would use public transportation more in the
future.

Follow Up:
1.   How easy is it to travel around your country?

Normally it is easy to travel in my country, however, in the big cities, the traffic jam is
terrible in  rush hour because of private cars and motorbikes using. Therefore, I prefer using
public transportation like bus to my own bikes to commute from home to workplace.

2.    Which method of travel do you consider safest? Why?

Honestly travelling by planes is my cup of tea because I suppose it is safest. It has

own flight line in the sky and can avoid most of  traffic crash as normal mode of
transportation.

3.    Has travel become safer in recent years than that was in the past?

Thanks to the  technology advancement, travelling is safer and more convenient than
previous time. The  mechanicians fix all the mistakes of cars and bikes and make them even
easier to use.

4.   What are the pros and cons of low-cost air travel?

Obviously it will be easier for people to travel, especially the low-income people. However,

more flights can bring more air pollution because the current planes still use fossil
power to operate  like oil or gas.

5.   How do you think people will travel in the future?

I hope more environment – friendly vehicles will be invented in the future for travellers.

They can use them more frequently without concerning about the pollution. Moreover,
the automatic traffic such as automatic cars or flights will reduce people’s energy.

6.   Should  the  government  in  a  country  focus  more  on  rail  transports  or
road transports? Why?
The road transports  are overloaded    now so  I  think rail transports  will be a
suitable alternative. Moreover, rail transports seem to be much safer than the normal way
and they help avoid traffic jam.
