Jeeva and Sharira Graha
Jeeva and Sharira Graha
Jeeva and Sharira Graha
The following article was published in "Today's Astrologer" journal March 1999.
How do we know the jeeva and sharira of a planet? There are twelve rashis (signs) and
twenty-seven nakshatras (constellations) in Hindu/Vedic astrology. The nine planets are
deposited in any rashi and the corresponding nakshatras, which have planets as their
lords. You can learn the details about rashis, names of nakshatras, nakshatra padas and the
distribution of nakshatras and their padas in the rashis and their lordships in any basic
book on Hindu/Vedic astrology.
Suppose a planet is in a particular nakshatra. The lord of that nakshatra will be the jeeva
of that planet. If the planet Guru (Jupiter) is in the nakshatra of Mangal (Mars), then
Mangal will be the jeeva of Guru. Now we have to check which nakshtra the jeeva planet
is deposited in and what is the lord of that nakshatra. Then that lord will be the sharira of
the planet. Now we have seen that Mangal is the jeeva of Guru. If Mangal is in the Ketu
(Dragon's Tail) nakshatra, then Ketu will be the sharira of Guru.
Examples
For example, if Guru is in the nakshatra of Guru that is its own nakshatra then Guru will
be the jeeva of Guru. Normally Guru will be the sharira also, but here the rule for finding
the sharira planet is slightly different. If the jeeva planet is in its own house, then only the
jeeva planet will be the sharira planet. If Guru is in its own nakshatra and also its own
house, then only Guru will be jeeva and sharira also. For example, if Guru is in the
nakshatra of Pooravabhadra fourth pada, then Guru is in its own nakshatra and its own
house Meena (Pisces). If Guru is in the house of some other planet, though in its own
nakshatra, then the lord of that house will be sharira. For example, if Guru is in the
nakshatra of Punarvasu third pada, it is in its own nakshatra. But it is not in its own
house; it is in Midhuna (Gemini), the house of Budha (Mercury). Then Budha will be the
sharira of Guru. If Guru is in the same Punarvasu nakshatra but in the fourth pada, it is
Kataka (Cancer) in the house of Chandra (Moon), Then Chandra is the sharira
of Guru.
Jeeva is the consciousness and sharira is activity. A planet's consciousness is known from
the characteristics of the jeeva planet and its activity is known from the characteristics of
the sharira planet. If the characteristics of the jeeva and sharira planets are not in tune
with the planet's nature and of a contradictory nature, the planet's consciousness and
activity will clash and the planet will not be able to give its results in its own natural way.
Planetary Relationships
Planets have a relationship between them as friend, enemy or neutral. In general, the
planets Guru (Jupiter), Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon) and Mangal (Mars) belong to one
group and the planets Shani (Shani), Shukra (Venus), Budha (Mercury), Rahu (Dragon's
head) and Ketu (Dragon's tail) belong to another group. The planets in the same group
are friends with each other. The planets in one group are enemies to the planets in the
other group. Of course, there are some exceptions and some are neutral. For example, for
Surya, Guru is a friend and Shukra is the enemy. Similarly, for Shukra, Shani is the friend
and Surya is the enemy. Planets have certain gunas or natures. The different gunas are
Satwik, Rajasik and Tamasik, In general, Satwik is of pure nature, Rajasik is of restless
nature and Tamasik is of dull or aggressive nature.
In general, the lordship of the 1,2,4,5,7,9 and10 bhavas is good and lordships of the
3,6,8,11 and 12th bhavas is bad.
Now, let's see how the jeeva and sharira would affect the performance of a planet. Guru is
a Satwik planet, that of pure nature. If it is in its own nakshatra and house, the jeeva and
sharira also would be Guru. That means Guru will have the pure consciousness and its
activity would also be pure in nature. There is no obstruction or contradiction in its
consciousness and activity. Therefore, such a Guru would generally be able to discharge
its duties smoothly without clashes /obstructions and would give whatever results it is
supposed to give for the horoscope depending on its placement, lordship, associations,
aspects etc.
If Guru is in its own nakshatra Visakha fourth pada in Vrischik (Scorpio) rashi, then the
jeeva is Guru but the sharira is Mangal (lord of Vrischik). Here Mangal is a Tamasik
planet, though a friend of Guru. Therefore the consciousness of Guru is of pure nature but
the activity will be of aggressive nature. There is a little clash between consciousness
between consciousness and activity.
In such a situation the activity will not go in tune with the consciousness and the planet
will not give its natural results to full extent. In addition if the lordships of jeeva and
sharira planets for a particular lagna are also not in tune with the planet, the results will
not come out fruitfully.
An example will explain the situation. There is a cake on the table which, from previous
experience, your mouth wants to eat. But the consciousness tells you not to do so because
you are diabetic. But the hand, the Karmendriya, may or may not listen to the
consciousness. If the jeeva and sharira are in tune with each other, you will not eat it, but
if they are not in tune, you will eat it. This is an example of involuntary action against the
wish of consciousness.
Another example has Guru's jeeva as Rahu and sharira is again Guru. That means Guru is
in the nakshatra of Rahu and Rahu is in the nakshatra of Guru. This is called nakshatra
parivartana (exchange). This Guru's consciousness is Tamasik and the activity is of a pure
nature. There is a clash between consciousness and activity, but this Guru although
having an aggressive and materialistic consciousness, will try to act with purity
considering all the pros and cons of the situation of the activity to be undertaken
according to its role in the horoscope.
If Guru's jeeva is Shukra and sharira is Rahu, the consciousness is of a restless nature and
on the activity side it is in the hands of Tamasik Rahu, resulting in either rash or dull
activity. This situation also will restrict Guru in showing its natural purity.
If the same Guru is in the Uttarashada nakshatra, it will be in nakshatra of Surya, the lord
of fifth house for Mesha lagna and friend of Guru. If this Surya is in the Chandra
nakshatra, Chandra will be the sharira of Guru. Here the situation of Guru is good with
Surya as jeeva as fifth lord and Chandra a sharira as fourth lord. Such a Guru can be
expected to give rise to spiritual progress.
The late Sri Jiddu Krishnamurthy (popularly known as JK) and the present Sri
U.G.Krishnamurthy (popularly known as UG) are considered as enlightened thinkers,
creative minds and world teachers of the present times in psychological, philosophical
and spiritual fields.
The discussion is mainly restricted to " Divine Knowledge and Moksha (final
emancipation) " represented by the twelfth bhava.
JK's HOROSCOPE
Date of birth 12 may 1895, Time of birth 00:30:00 IST, Place of birth Madanapalle,
Andhra Pradesh, India Longitude 78:34:00 East, Latitude 13:37:00 North, Lahiri's
Ayanamsa
Ascendant ( Lagna) Capricorn 23 deg 55 min; Aries -Sun 28 deg 48 min; Taurus-
Mercury 07deg 22min; Gemini- Venus 06 deg 32 min, Jupiter 12deg 56min, Mars 19 deg
20 min; Leo- Ketu 26 deg 29 min; Libra Saturn Retrograde 10 deg 12 min; Sagittarius-
Moon 02 deg 42 min; Aquarius- Rahu 26 deg 29 min;
The 10th cusp is in Scorpio 2 deg 13 min and the 12th cusp is in Sagittarius 26 deg 7 min.
Balance of Dasa at birth: Ketu 5 years 7 months 6 days.
Jupiter, the preceptor of Devas and Gnanakaraka, is the 12th bhava lord aspecting the
12th bhava. The 12th bhava is also aspected by the 10th lord Karmadhipathi Mars (10th
cusp being in Scorpio) in association with Jupiter directing the necessary energy into his
spiritual pursuits. The 12th bhava is beyond the purview of Moon, Venus and Saturn as
per the Bhava allocation.
The foundation of the horoscope is quite strong since lord of the ascendant Saturn is
exalted (his exaltation only conflicting his personality) and in the 9th bhava Atmakaraka
Sun is also exalted, Saturn and Sun are well placed in Navamsa also.
These combinations are very likely to be the same for others also born nearly at the same
time and will not really give the clue about the acquisition of Divine Knowledge
culminating in Moksha. Hence it is required to dwelve deep into the analysis of the 12th
bhava for confirmation of these aspects.
The 12th cusp falls into the sign of Jupiter and star Poorvashada of Venus , another
preceptor (though preceptor of Demons, what if , preceptor only) and Yogakaraka for this
horoscope.
This is reinforced by the placement of Ketu (146 deg 29 min) in the star of Venus and sub
of Ketu similar to the situation of the 12th bhava in the star of Venus and sub of Ketu. In
addition, Ketu is in the sign of Sun, Atmakaraka and responsible for psychic
development. Mercury responsible for psychological development and Rahu responsible
for psychology, metaphysical aspects are in the sub of Ketu. Moon responsible for mind
and psycho-physiological consciousness is again in the star of Ketu. Also Mars, Saturn
and Jupiter are in the star of Rahu, a complement of Ketu
Thus, the planet Ketu, the Mokshakaraka is not only the sub lord of the 12th bhava but
also is in his own sub and also influencing all other planets. Again , both the preceptors,
Jupiter and Venus, are in the sign and star of the 12th bhava.
Hence all the energies of the native will be directed towards attainment of Divine
Knowledge and teaching his experience to others and finally culminating to Moksha
(enlightenment) .It is likely that the native might have got his enlightenment in the Dasa
of Sun being exalted.
UG's HOROSCOPE
Date of birth 9 July 1918, Time of Birth 06:10:32 hrs, Place of birth Masulipatnam
Longitude 81:07 East Latitude 16:11 North, Lahiri Ayanamsa
Ascendant (Lagna) Gemini 29 deg 25 min; Gemini-Jupiter 6 deg 27 min, Sun 23 deg 24
min; Cancer- Saturn 21 deg 11 min, Mercury 6 deg 47 min, Moon 1 deg 46 min; Virgo-
Mars 14 deg 53 min; Scorpio- Rahu 28 deg 24 min; Taurus- Venus 18 deg 45 min, Ketu
28 deg 24 min
The 10th cusp is in Pisces 26 deg 7 min and the 12th cusp is in Taurus 28 deg 19 min
Venus, the preceptor of Demons is the 12th lord deposited in the 12th bhava itself along
with the 10th bhava lord Jupiter (as per Bhava allocation), the preceptor Devas and Ketu
the Mokshakaraka and ofcourse Rahu responsible for psychology, metaphysics aspecting
the 12th bhava.
In Navamsa, Venus is in the sign of intellectual Mercury, Jupiter is in the sign of Mars
and Sun and Ketu is again in the sign of and association with lord of the ascendant
Mercury.
The foundation of this horoscope is also very strong since the ascendant is Vargottama
(same ascendant in Rashi and Navamsa charts), lord of ascendant Mercury, Atmakaraka
Sun and Manahkaraka Moon are in lagna bhava (1st bhava), in Navamsa also Mercury,
Sun and Moon are well placed.
This situation, even through the normal standard has got strong potentialities to give
success in acquiring Divine Knowledge and Moksha.
But again it is required to be confirmed by further studying the 12th bhava with respect to
its sub allocation.
The 12th bhava is situated in the sign of Venus, in the star of Mars and sub of
philosophical Saturn. The Mokshakaraka Ketu is again strongly situated I the
combination of sign of Venus, star of Mars and sub of Saturn. The Atmakaraka Sun, the
metaphysical Rahu are also in the sub of Saturn. The lord of ascendant, intellectual
Mercury is in the star of Saturn and Moon, the Manahkaraka is in the sub of Rahu, the
complement of Ketu.
Thus the sub lord of the 12th bhava Saturn being himself a philosophical planet is
directly connected to Ketu, the Kaivalyakaraka, being in the sub of Saturn and the other
planets are also involve d with the 12th bhava, including the two main preceptors Jupiter
and Venus.
It is likely that the native might have got his enlightenment in the Dasa of Venus being in
his own sign and 12th bhava.
Angry Planets
(Notes of Lecture given at Indian Council of Astrological Studies, Hyderabad, India)
Introduction
Reincarnation is one of the theories of Hindu Philosophy. All beings take fresh births to
experience the results of their actions (Karma) done in their previous birth. Even if there
is a little Karma left over, it has to be experienced. The Karma can be either good or bad
giving favorable or unfavorable results. There is nothing much to worry as long as the
Karma is good for normal human beings. The human being suffers from misfortunes in
the shape of loss of wealth, loss of name, death of kith and kin, diseases etc., as a result of
bad Karma in his previous life.
The position of planets in the birth chart would give a clue to find out the cause of one's
good or bad karma done in the past life. When the planets are favorably placed, they
indicate fruition of good Karma, otherwise that of evil Karma. The planets responsible for
bad Karma in the past life would result in the person suffering from afflictions in the
present life and these planets are called angry planets.
It is believed that Atma Jnana (Self-Realization) can however overcome the effects of the
good or bad karma. But many of the human beings cannot reach that state of Atma Jnana.
So doing some remedial measures to these angry planets may reduce the evil effects due
to the Angry Planets.
The astrologer should, carefully divine whether one's past karma is favorable or
unfavorable and in what manner it expresses itself.
Angry Planets
The Angry Planets causing evil Karma are the natural benefic planets deposited in 6th,
8th and 12th houses and the natural malefic planets deposited in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th
and 10th houses, from Chathra rasi, Arudha, Moon and Lagna. The deposition of planets
in the 2nd, 3rd and 11th may be taken as neutral, since nothing is specifically mentioned
about them in the available literature.
Chathra Rashi
The Chathra rasi is the sign counted from the Veedhi rasi. Count the number of signs
from Arudha lagna to the birth lagna and then count this number from the Veedhi rasi to
get the Chathra rasi. For example, if Arudha lagna is Capricorn and Veedhi rasi is Aries,
birth lagna is Libra, count from Arudha lagna to birth lagna from Capricorn to Libra,
which is 10, and then count 10 signs from Veedhi rasi of Aries which is Capricorn and so
Chathra rasi is Capricorn. Similarly if birth lagna is Cancer, Arudha lagna is Aries,
Veedhi rasi is Gemini, and then Chathra rasi is Virgo.
Veedhi Rasi
If Sun is in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo, the Veedhi rasi is Aries. If Sun is in Scorpio,
Capricorn or Aquarius, Veedhi rasi is Gemini. If Sun is in the other signs, the Veedhi rasi
is Taurus. For example, if Sun is in Leo, Veedhi rasi is Aries. If Sun is in Aquarius,
Veedhi rasi is Gemini. If Sun is in Aries, Veedhi rasi is Taurus.
Arudha Lagna
Arudha lagna is the point obtained by counting as many signs from the place of the lord
of the birth lagna is removed from birth lagna. Example is if the lord of the lagna is in the
4th, and then 7th from the lagna becomes the Arudha lagna. But the exceptions are if the
lord of the lagna is in the lagna itself then the 4th from lagna becomes the Arudha lagna
and if the lord of the lagna is in the 7th then the Arudha lagna will be the 10th from the
lagna.
For example, if the lagna is Taurus and the lord of the lagna Venus is in Libra in 6th, the,
count 6 sings from Libra and the Arudha lagna will be Pisces. If the lagna is Aries and
lord of lagna Mars is in Cancer, then count 7 signs from Aries and the Arudha lagna will
be Libra. If the lagna is Libra and lord of lagna Venus is in Libra itself, count 4 signs
from Libra and the Arudha lagna will be Capricorn. If the lagna is Cancer and the lord of
the lagna Moon is in Capricorn, count 10 signs from Cancer and the Arudha lagna will be
Aries.
There may be some difference of opinions about fixing the Arudha lagna, as given above.
The readers may use their own discretion about the rules they follow.
Categories of Karma
According to the disposition of the benefic and malefic planets in the birth chart from
Chathra rasi, Arudha lagna, Moon or Birth lagna, the cause of the evil karma is
ascertained. If benefics occupy 6th, 8th and 12th from Chathra rasi and malefics occupy
1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th 10th, the sins and consequent evil effects are due to the Gods' wrath
or fury of Gods. Here by Gods are also meant persons held in reverence such as parents,
preceptors and elders. If the planets are found in the above places from Arudha lagna, the
sins are the outcome of curses from Brahmins or Religious persons. If the planets occupy
such places from Moon, the sins are due to the incantation (mantric) of enemies. If the
planets are found in the above-mentioned places from birth lagna, the peoples' hatred will
be the cause.
Planets favorably placed, that is, benefics in 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and malefics in 6th,
8th, 12th, indicate merit derived from good deeds.
The bad actions may be intentional or deliberate. They may also be either accidental or
unintentional or done out of ignorance. They may also be both combined. If the indicator
planet representing angry planets is in the Moon's sign, the sins are deliberately
committed, If the indicator planet is in the house of Sun, the sons are ignorantly or
accidentally got.
Suppose one deliberately insults or assaults one's parents or elders. Here the nature of the
evil Karma is due to the intentional Word and Deed. The same is the case when the
person harbors evil thoughts and the evil Karma is due to thought. If on the other hand,
one uses impolite language towards an elder through ignorance or slip of tongue, the
nature of Karma is accidental by thought or Deed. Theaggreived party feels pain and this
rebounds on the perpetrator of the karma.
If a weak malefic is the 5th, the sins may be considered as the outcome of mental actions.
If it is in the 2nd, they are the results of his words, cruel and unwanted. If it is in the 10th,
they are the fruits of his bodily actions.
If some planets indicate deliberate actions and some planets indicate accidental actions, a
certain delicate balancing is called for. If malefic occupy 5th, 2nd and 10th houses, evil
karma would have emanated from all the three- Thought, Word and Deed respectively. If
malefics occupy only the 2nd and 5th while benieics occupy the 10th, the work is done
unwillingly, complaining bitterly. If malefics occupy the 5th house while good planets are
in the 2nd and 10th, the duties are done carelessly or indifferently without proper
attention and this may generally bring loss of children since 5th represents children. If
malefics occupy 2nd while benefics join the 5th and 10th houses, the evil has issued out
of words, which may bring about loss of money since 2nd represents money. If these
malefic are in debilitation or occupy inimical places or combust, they cause intense evil.
If benefics are in exaltation, in own or friendly houses, the good they give will also be
great. On the contrary, if malefics are exalted and if benefics are debilitated, their effects
will be little.
In the above chart, the birth lagna is Libra. Lord of lagna Venus is in lagna Libra itself.
Therefore counting 4 signs from Libra (as per the exception) the Arudha lagna is
Capricorn counting 4 signs from Libra. Sun is in Leo and therefore the Veedhi rasi is
Aries. Aurdha lagna to birth lagna is 10 signs and then counting 10 signs from Veedhi rasi
of Aries , the Chathra rasi is Capricorn.
From Chathra rasi of Capricorn, the benefic Mercury is in Leo in 8th and the malefics
Rahu and Ketu are in 10th and 4th. The other benefics Jupiter, Venus, Moon are in 2nd,
10th and 1st and the other malefics Saturn, mars, Sun are in 3rd, 8th from Chathra rasi of
Capricorn. Therefore the Angry Planets due to Gods' wrath are Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
From Arudha lagna of Capricorn, again the angry planets due to Brahmins' wrath are
Mercury, Rahu and Ketu. Again from Moon in Capricorn, the angry planets due to
enemies' wrath are Mercury, Rahu and Ketu. From birth lagna of Libra, Rahu and Ketu
are in 7th and 1st and hence the angry planets due to Public wrath are Rahu and Ketu
since other benefic planets Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury are in 1st, 4th, 5th, and 11th
and the other malefic planets Saturn, Mars and Sun are in 6th and 11th houses.
Thus Mercury, Rahu and Ketu are the Angry planets for this horoscope due to curses
from Gods, Brahmins, Enemies and Public in previous life, which would give sufferings
in present life as per their placement and signification in the birth chart.
Example II
The birth lagna is Cancer. The Arudha lagna is Aries counting 10 signs from cancer as per
exception. The Veedhi rasi is Gemini since Sun is in Aquarius. Arudha lagna to birth
lagna is 4 signs and then counting 4 signs from Veedhi rasi of Gemini, the Chathra rasi id
Virgo.
From Chathra rasi of Virgo, the malefics Mars, Ketu and Saturn are in 5th, 9th and 10th
and therefore the angry planets due to Gods' wrath are Mars, Saturn and Ketu. Since the
benefics Moon, Jupiter and Venus are in 5th, 7th from Chathra rasi of Virgo and the other
malefics of Rahu and Sun are 3rd and 6th.
From Arudha lagna, the benefics Jupiter and Venus are in the 12th and the malefic Mars
is in 10th. Hence the angry planets due to Brahmins' wrath are Jupiter, Venus and Mars,
since other benefics Moon and Mercury are in the 10th and the other malefics Saturn,
Rahu and Sun are in 3rd, 8th and 11th from Arudha lagna of Aries.
From Moon in Capricorn, themalefics Mars and Ketu are in 1st and 5th houses. The other
malefics Sun, Saturn and Rahu are in 2nd, 6th and 11th and the benefics Moon, Jupiter
and Venus are in 1st and 3rd from Moon. Therefore the angry planets due to the enemies'
wrath are Mars and Ketu.
From birth lagna of Cancer, the malefics Rahu and Mars are in the 5th and 7th houses.
The other malefics Sun, Ketu and Saturn are in 8th, 11th and 12th houses and the
benefics Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are in 7th and 9th from birth lagna of Cancer.
Therefore the angry planets due to people wrath are Mars and Rahu.
Thus the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Ketu, Venus, Mars and Rahu are the angry planets due to
curses from Gods, Brahmins, Enemies and Public in previous life as per their placement
and significations in the birth chart.
Remedial Measures
After finding the angry planets due to various causes as mentioned above, the remedial
measures are to be done to those angry planets by doing concerned pujas, by giving
concerned charities, by praying concerned Gods etc. For example, if Sun is the angry
planet, the remedial measures may be puja to Sun, charities of wheat, ruby, praying Lord
Shiva etc. Details of remedial measures are not given here since it is totally a different
subject and readers are requested to refer to books and articles on remedial measures or
consult a knowledgeable and reliable astrologer or priest of their faith and choice.
Conclusion
Since the sins committed in past life are carried forward to the present life, the human
being suffers in the present life. One should find out those sins committed in the past life
and the concerned angry planets. Suitable remedial measures are to be done to those
angry planets to lessen the evil effects in this present life. Also suitable care is to be taken
in this life not to do any further evil to Gods, Brahmins, Enemies and Public by Thought,
Word and Deed to avoid suffering from any curse or wrath from them in the next life.
Thus nullifying all the bad karma in due course by completing the good Karma also, one
can attain Salvation without Rebirth. The basis for this article is from the Prasna Sastra of
Kerala extending to Natal birth chart.
Birth chart
Prepare the birth chart for this rectified birth time, placing the lagna and planets in
respective rasis with their degrees in order.
Angry Planets
Find the Angry planets responsible for bad karma in the past life causing sufferings in the
present life. Angry planets are: natural benefic planets in 6th, 8th and 12th houses and
natural malefic planets in 1st 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th houses (2nd, 3rd 11th houses are
neutral) from Chathra, Arudha, Moon and Birth lagnas for wrath from Gods, Brahmins,
Enemies and Public respectively. If the indicator planet is in Moon sign, the sins
committed are deliberately committed and if in the house of Sun the sins are ignorantly or
accidentally got.
Arudha lagna- the point obtained by counting as many signs from the place of birth lagna
lord is removed from birth lagna. Example: if lagna lord is in 4th, the Arudha is 7th from
lagna, Exceptions: if lagna lord in lagna itself then Arudha lagna is 4th from lagna, if
lagna lord is in 7th then Arudha is 10th from lagna.
Veedhi lagna- If Sun is in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo, Veedhi lagna is Aries. If Sun is
in Scorpio, Capricorn, or Aquarius Veedhi lagna is Gemini. If Sun is in the other signs,
the Veedhi lagna is Taurus.
Chathra lagna- Count the number of signs from Arudha lagna to birth lagna and then
count this number from Veedhi lagna to get Chathra lagna.
Remedial measures
To the angry planets do concerned pujas, give concerned charities, pray concerned Gods
etc to lessen the evil effects in the present life. Also take care not to do any further evils
to Gods, Brahnins, Enemies and Public by thought, word and deed to avoid any further
curse or wrath from them in the next life. Thus nullify all bad Karma in due course by
completing the good Karmas also, one can attain Salvation without rebirth.
Note down all the karakatwas of planets. For example, Saturn karmakaraka, Jupiter Jiva
and Jnana karaka, Ketu Mokshakaraka, Venus kalatrakaraka, Mercury vidyakaraka, Mars
bhatrukaraka, Sun Atma and Pitrukaraka, Moon matru and manah karaka etc.
Combination of planets
Planets in the same direction of rasis or in trines are supposed to be together. Directions
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius - East; Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn-South; Gemini, Libra, Aquarius-
West; Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces- North
Note down the combination in order as per degrees for analysis. For example, Sun+Moon
indicate father (Sun) travels (Moon). Moon + Mars indicate mother (Moon) courageous
(Mars). For female Mars+ Ketu+Venus indicate disturbances ( Ketu) between husband
(Mars) and Jeeva self ( Venus for females). Jupiter+ Saturn indicates respect (Jupiter) in
work (Saturn) Dharma Karma Yoga. Life (Jupiter) Vayu Air (Saturn) gives rheumatic,
asthma, likes to eat relishingly, should not eat more oily foods because fatty, gastric in
stomach, thighs problem, etc. Venus+Rahu indicate some difficulties in domestic life,
illhealth or death to wife, Rahu being retrograde swallows Venus wife. Venus+ Moon
gives wealth (Venus) and expenditure (Moon). Saturn+Sun+ Moon indicate work
(Saturn), government (Sun) travels (Moon) highly influenced person connected with
government and nature of work involves travels.
Planets in the opposite houses and in the adjacent houses also influence.
Saturn decides the fate and duties and to what extent other planets cooperate with Saturn
the different planetary combinations involving Saturn in birth chart decides this.
Retrograde planets
They are also considered as being in the sign behind them. Retro, retro-direct to the
original degree wherefrom it became retro and then Direct are to be considered.
When a benefic planet is hemmed in between two enemy planets, there will be
impediments to the benefic effect of benefic planet.
When an enemy planet located in 2nd sign to the sign where a planet located is
retrograde, the planet in the first sign gets affected and yields malefic results.
A planet cannot yield its results if there are no planets located in the 7th, 2nd, 12th and
5th signs therefrom. Even if it yields its effects will be most minimum. But this planet if
it gets planetary interchange with some other planet can work wonders and can be most
effective.
If the combust planet (when nearer to Sun) were to be in planetary interchange with some
other planet though the planetary interchange has no significance the combust planet
yields surprising results.
If the combust planet has in combination with friendly planets, the bad effects of
planetary combustion will be pronounced.
Exaltation of a planet gets cancelled if retrograde. If such an exalted retro planet has to its
12th sign an enemy planet, it is as though in a position of fearsome exaltation. If there is
an enemy planet in 2nd and 7th, the exaltation of that particular planet is incomplete.
If a particular planet has in its 12th sign enemy planet, it is to be presumed that both
planets will yield minimum effects. But if the enemy planet in 12th sign is retrograde, the
planet located next to it will yield good results.
If out of the two planets together, the planet, which has more longitude, is an enemy
planet and is retro the planet which is less in longitude will yield most minimum effect.
If out the two planets in a planetary interchange, one of the planets is debilitated, the
debilitation gets cancelled due to the planetary exchange. Also if the debilitated planet
has a friendly or benefic planet with it or in the 7th or 5th there from or aspect then the
debilitation gets cancelled.
During the planetary transit for the first time after the native's birth, the transit effects will
be ordinary. But when the same planet transit for the second time the effects will be
maximum. During their transit for the third time in the native's life the effects will be
medium. This is because the native's age will be tender during the first transit, youthful
during second transit and will be attaining old age during the third transit in case of major
planets like Jupiter and Saturn.
For example, suppose in a native's birth chart, Mars is located at the 15th degree in
Capricorn. Suppose during transit Saturn enters the same sign and it requires another 15
months approximately for Saturn to transit exact degree portion of Mars. So, we have to
predict that the consultant native has to undergo lot of hardships in his professional field
during these 15 months. Similarly Saturn transits sign where a benefic planet is located
we have to predict beneficial results.
Take another example. Suppose in birth chart Moon is located at Aswini 2 star and
suppose the planet Rahu transits this Aswini 2 star pada during transit, we have then to
predict that native is suffering from mental delusions, fear complex and a sort of mental
gloom during this period. It is only when the transiting Rahu moves away from the
Aswini star that the native can experience favorable effects like mental fortitude, peace of
mind and other auspicious results.
Like this if during transits suppose two mutually inimically disposed malefic planets
together transit a particular sign and suppose benefic planets like Venus or Jupiter transit
the 7th sign therefrom. In such circumstances, disastrous effects of the transit of such
malefic planets will be checkmated.
Conclusion
Angry planets and Some predictive techniques are given to stimulate thinking process to
proceed and do further research. Many birth charts with known events may be studied to
consolidate one's predictive techniques. However, certain imaginative and intuitive
processes along with the place, time (Desha kala many ritya) and background of the
person, are also required by praying the Navagrahas, Istha Devata and Meditation daily.
The following article was published in "The Times of Astrology"magazine, New Delhi,
India Jan 2000.
Introduction
Most of the readers may be knowing by now about Nadi astrology, since many articles
have been published in magazines and newspapers. Some books were also published and
much exchange of information has been taking place through internet and e-mail. For the
benefit of those who are not familiar with this branch of astrology I give a brief
background of the same from the reliable literature. Nadi astrology was written on palm
leaves in ancient India. It is mostly prevalent in South India particularly in the Tamilnadu
State. Its main center is a place called 'Vaitheerswarankoil' near 'Chidambaram'in
Tamilnadu State. It is also available in some other places of Chennai, Kanchipuram,
Salem, Hyderabad/Secunderabad, Tirupati etc. There are many Nadi Grandhas and they
are named after Hindu Gods, Sages and Planets such as Mahasiva Nadi, Brugu Nadi,
Kowmara Nadi , Koushika Nadi, Vashishta Nadi Agastya Nadi, Sapta Rishi Nadi,
SatyaNadi Chandra Kala Nadi etc. They are available in the languages of Tamil, Sanskrit
mainly. The palm leaves are held by certain families who read the results from the palm
leaves mostly by taking the thumb impression and some from palm and birth data.
I also propose to discuss brief examples of actual readings from thumb prints or
otherwise from some nadi astrologers, their veracity with respect to past and future,
correlation with traditional astrological principles, my experiences, opinion of others,
doubts and questions, further research required on the same. This is based on my
collection of data and research for the last three decades
History
The origin of these leaves can be traced back to approximately 2000 years ago. It is
presumed that the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages) had written the life patterns of each person
on palm leaves along with their types of names by their Yogic Powers. These unique
leaves were kept in the Saraswati Mahal' library of Tanjore city of Tamilnadu State in
India. Later during the British Rule the British were very keen to acquire these types of
ancient leaves dealing with herbal cure, alchemy, fortune-telling etc; but left some of the
astrological leaves to their loyalists. Some were put to auction also. People belonging to a
particular sect called Valluvar community who specialized in astrology bought these
leaves. Some of these were acquired by the astrology families in Vaitheeswarankoil about
60 years ago from Thanjavur Saraswati Mahal Library . The leaves were found lying idle
in Vaitheeswarankoil by about 13th century the forefathers found them realized their
values and copied the contents on palm leaves and made exact replica These leaves have
been handed down over generations to make predictions. They earned their livelihood
through Nadi Astrology. It is a hereditary profession for them. They got trained from their
elders to do Nadi reading. What is written on the leaves is read and explained by them.
The language is poetic and the script is also different. It is the same as in the ancient
temples. Some of the Nadis are available in the Oriental Manuscripts Library at Chennai,
India though in mutilated condition and the SaptaRishiNadi was published in Tamil in six
volumes lagna wise . The Sanskrit texts were translated and written on palmyra or palm
leaves in old archaic tamil language. There were some nadigranthas translated into
another South Indian Telugu language. Marata King Sarabhoji and Chola Kings
patronized this form of astrology and translations. It is stated that Sage Agasthya has
written in Tamil. They have a certain amount of collection leaves. For each thumb print
there will be 6 granthas. In each granthas there will be 108 sizes and 12 parts according to
Siva Nadi and 50 sizes in Agastyanadi that means for one thumb print many stories of
person can be read. In Siva Nadi more details are given as discussion between Lord Siva
and Parvati than in Agastya Nadi . It seems that these Nadis were originally written on
animal skins and some leaves and later they were copied on palm leaves. They re
preserved by applying oil extracted from peacock's blood.
The Nadi readers say that natives whose leaves are there will somehow or other comes to
them at the appropriate age specified on the leaves from any corner of the world. Leaves
are there not only for Indian but for foreigners also belonging to other religions. Who
ever are desired to look into the leaves will go to them on his own accord. They very
word Nadi in Tamil mean (destined) to come own accord. Those who are not destined
may not even know such a type of astrology exists. Even the very age when the native is
destined to go to them is marked on the leaves. So they say they do not adventure for
their profession. Whoever is destined to come will come faith is the root of their system.
It is also stated that about 40% of the people in the world only are likely to get these
results as available.
Procedure
The Nadi Astrologer is generally busy and one has to take an appointment with him a
month before approximately When you go there on the appointed day he checks his dairy
and take the three impressions of the right thumb for males and the left thumb for females
on a paper giving serial order number and ask you to wait till he calls you. Then he goes
inside his library room where the palm leaves are kept which is not accessible to others.
After an hour or so, sometimes quicker, he comes back with an old palm leaf bundle
called index leaves. After making himself comfortable he carefully unwinds the long
string which keeps the bundle in tact. He tells you to answer yes or no to his questions.
With great devotion he takes the first palm leaf and starts reading on one side. The
reading style is of funny accent in a poetic way, not understandable to even Tamilians.
After reading one or two lines or even less sometimes he asks you some questions and
you have to answer yes or no only. If you say 'No' he proceeds to the other side of leaf or
next leaf and continues his questions. The questions are generally one or two at a time ,
such as whether y our name is after some God /Goddess contains 3 or 4 or so letters or so,
starts ends with a particular letter in a Varga (series) of the Hindu alphabets, Similarly
about the names of parents and wife/husband whether anyone of them or both are alive or
dead, number of elder and younger brothers and sisters, number of children number of
uncles, type of profession, whether you are born in rainy season /summer etc. whether
you are born in moveable /fixed/dual Moon and lagna rasis, whether you are born in a
particular Moon Birth star whether you are born in a particular day in a particular year
whether your age is so and so etc. He says that h e does not know what questions to ask
unless he scans the leaves and that is why they generally insist the concerned person or a
person who knows every detail about the persons consulted, should be present to answer
the questions correctly, otherwise they say the readings won't go wrong. They do no
bother much of you cannot answer questions about birth date month age, Moon rasi and
star, lagna and they seem to bother more about matching of your name names of parents
and wife/husband. If he gets 'No' answers to all the leaves of the first bundle which he
goes back into his library and brings another bundle. This process continues for an hour
or so generally covering generally up to bundles each consisting about 50 leaves or
sometimes quickly even in the first bundle till he and your are satisfied and the answers
to all the questions in a particular leaf are 'yes' only Concerning names, parents, wife
/husband, co-borns profession etc.
Then he goes inside and bring another particular bundle and reads in poetic style your
actual birth date month land year the astrological birth chart with position of planets
sometimes with lagna also exact names of yourself, parents, wife/ husband, co-born,
education, profession and gist of future predictions in a broad way and this is called
General Kandam (chapter) of first bhava. You can verify the chart given if you know your
birth chart he writes the concerned verses from the leaf in a note book . Then he records
the same in an audio tape with translation into common understandable Tamil or some
other languages with the help of a translator if necessary . He generally charges a
minimum of 300 rupees upto this General Kandam Then he asks you whether you want to
more details about any particular aspect of your life such as marriage, profession, etc and
if so he picks up corresponding bundle and charges a similar amount extra for each aspect
which he calls it a separate kandam or chapter. Some chapters give details about previous
birth, remedial measures etc. At the end he hands over the note book and audio tape to
you with devotion and takes money generally at the place where the photos of Gods
/Goddess are there.
Kandam 1 - To be found through thumb impression (gents right, ladies left or sometimes
by horoscope of the concerned person or palm, will contain name parents and
wife/husband's names brothers, sisters, maternal uncles, children, profession and general
list of future predictions for all the 12 houses.
Kandam 2 - Money family speech, eyes, education.
Kandam 9 - Father, Wealth, luck, Temple devotion to God ,Preaching from Holyman
Kandam 16 - Dasa Bhuktikandam prediction for the present major and subperiod of the
planet.
In addition to these, there is also a special chapter for 'Prasna' where any
query is answered.
Generally Remedial measures are like visiting particular temple, feeding the
poor etc, corresponding to sins the remedial measures re suggested. Suggestion of giving
alms to the Nadi reader.
Lines on the thumb are classified in 1008 types, some say 108 types. Palm leaves are
arranged according to these types. The Nadi readers identify the particular types of lines
on the thumb and the corresponding set of palm leaves is taken. For example, a particular
type is called Conch Shell with a circle. Among these there are many sub-divisions based
on the number of dots on the thumb. Impressions with 5 or more dots are very rare. The
time duration to pick up your leaf depends upon the identification of the thumb
impression. Some impressions are identified easily and the corresponding leaves are
found soon, for legal purposes, the whole thumb is studied minutely. But they concentrate
only on the centre part of the thumb and the sub-divisions therein.
However, the future of the leaves themselves seems to be uncertain. Though the leaves
are smeared with Ayurvedic act, the leaves would turn black after 100 years or so. While
they plan to save the contents of the leaf on the computer, they have their own doubts
about doing that. They will not feel the same reverence reading the computer prints out as
they do when they read the leaf.
The Nadi Reader asked whether I knew my date and birth chart and he said it would be
faster to pick up the concerned leaf. I gave him the same./ Then the procedure was the
same , he brought back some index cards and asked me questions to answer yes or no leaf
after leaf. Some of the questions whether my name and my father's name were given after
the name of Lord Venkateswara, whether I have one sister and one son, whether my
wife's name was after one of the names of wives of Trimurthy's (Bhrahma
,Vishnu,Maheshwara) etc. I asked for my profession (10th Kanda) and he wrote the
readings in Tamil verses in a notebook and translated in English as follows.
"After praying to Goddess Parvati , Vasista and Viswamitra are narrating the tenth part of
a person having following horoscope"- Ravi Buddha and Kuja in Simha, Guru in
Khumba, Ketu in Mesha , Chandra in Makara , Sani in Meena, Tula Linga, Sucker and

Each nadi amsha is again divided into two parts called Poorvabhaga (first part) and
Uttarabhaga (second part), amounting to total of 300 parts, each
part consisting of 6' in arc or 24 seconds in time. Some nadi astrologers divide the nadi
amasha into 4 parts, amounting to a total of 600 parts, called Kalas each Kala consisting
of 3' in arc or 12 seconds in time, to distinguish the role and duty of an individual as
Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vysya or Sudra in the broad fields of religious / philosophical
guidance, ruling, trading, or service respectively.
Sthula(broad)life patterns are given for 1st and 2nd part of each nadi amsha in a Lagna
(Ascendant). The general life patterns for some of these nadi amshas in a lagna are
covered in the Astrological magazine of Bangalore, India. Sukshma (subtle) patterns are
to be evolved with the position of planets in the particular chart.
Now consider the Aroha (upward) and Avaroha (downward) motions of duration in
Prithvi Antar tatwa as follows:
You can see that the duration is still sub-divided into minimum of 12 seconds, which is
time taken for each Kala of nadi amsha.
This scheme is given in the book "Jyotisha Siddhamthamu" (out of print now) written in
1973 in South Indian Telugu language by my Guru Late
"DaivagnaRatna" and "Vidya Visarada" Sri Divakaruni Venkata Subba Rao, quoting
"Jataka Phalachintamani" that the tatwas take avaroha also.
For the sake of interest and appreciation of the readers, I quote below the general life
pattern given for the second part of Kamalamsha (6-6 to 6-12) from Dhruva Nadi:
"The native belongs to a Shudder caste.(?). He is a devotee of Vishnu and is the 8th issue
(?) to his parents. He is born in a city. His parents are long lived. His father lives as an
employee of the State moving about in different places. He serves a Niche Parch. His
profession in to do with chemicals and minerals (Rasayargada-moolena Dhabi dravyadhi
Haitian). His father is a welted man. He lives in a foreign country. He has a number of
friends. His mother is a lady of great moral character and discipline. His eldest brother is
not alive. He has a long life and well built body (?) and a dark complexion (?). He is
educated. He is dutiful to his parents and is Satwik by nature. He has respect for the
Brahmins and Gods. He is moderate in his ambitions and his talk. He has the knack to
read others' characters, but inclined to deceive his friends (?). He is an eloquent speaker.
He is employed in the Defense department (Senapatimupashritya). He marries a good
looking girl of character in his 21st (?) year. His real prosperity begins after marriage.
When he is 16 (?) a great misfortune hits the family because of his father's Yoga bhanga.
His father becomes much afflicted due to the machinations of enemies and loss of wealth.
After his 22nd year, he gets a daughter (?). His father's enemies become crushed and
things will again improve. His parents become extremely happy. At 29 he gets into the
good glances of ruler. His father dies when he is 32 (?). There is continuous prosperity
after 35. At 36 his mother dies(?). At 40 he has a big lift in the position. He is sent to
foreign countries on errands. He gets plenty of money and two conveyances. At 42 he
gets Raja Mudras. 2 sons and 1 daughter (?) are long lived. He is helpful to others. He
gives charities. His sons also prosper. He prospers like the waxing Moon till his death. At
64 his wife dies. At 65 he passes away."
I may mention here that the general pattern mostly matches except for the ages and the
question mark (?) is given in the brackets wherever it differs. The idea to give this
reading is only to appraise the readers how a general life pattern is given from the lagna
nadi amsha only. The patterns in the other nearer nadi amshas are not discussed to save
space. It is not also necessary that all the points have to match correctly since it is only a
broad background key to subsequently link it up intelligently with the actual planetary
positions for understanding the actual life events.
Comments
Though it is fairly understood how the nadi amsha divisions are visualized by our great
ancient astrologers, it is still a hard nut to crack how they could have given the general
life pattern of each nadi amsha without referring to any particular lagna and planetary
positions. It seems that there are 108 tatwas, what are they and whether they are also
linked up the nadi amshas is not known. This minute division sets the seed of an
individual. If the correct nadi amsha is established, which is not so easy, there is a bird's
eye view of the entire past and future of the person concerned. Each nadi amsha has got
its own peculiar characteristics, but it
can clearly indicate one's pattern of destiny. In relation to planetary positions, birth star
etc. it can give an idea of one's parentage, number of brothers, sisters etc. A nadi amsha
connected with a birth star and certain other planetary situations can enable us to predict
future events with considerable accuracy. In fact, it seems, that Sage Satyacharya, father
of Nadi Astrology, says that in the absence of the correct nadi amsha, the time of birth
cannot be decided accurately.
During my recent visit to USA to give lectures on this topic of Hindu Astrology in the
conferences of American Federation of Astrologers and Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, on their
invitation, I found there in a World almanac book that for every 3 seconds 9 births and 6
deaths take place ( it is for the scholars to understand where the other extra 3 births are
coming from). That means, this nadi amsha division that a human birth takes place in
every 12 seconds also may not hold good in the present circumstances. The present nadi
amshas might have been written in the ancient times when the birth rate is very slow.
Also it looks that these patterns are visualized to suit more to some particular regions
within some distance of longitudes.
Therefore, it is the moral duty of every astrologer to collect and maintain the birth data
and life events of the known individuals and discuss with others in the field with an open
mind and research angle or present their findings in this esteemed journal or elsewhere
for the benefit of others in the field. Then probably we may get similar charts on the same
day with different lagna parts and life stories, born to different parents or as twins, in
different countries to really do some research. By subjecting the Sage's revelation to
proper investigation and research, some rules may be formulated to pinpoint the correct
moment of birth, if God permits the ancient astrological wonders may be revived again
and a new Nadi Grantha may evolve to suit to the present modern circumstances. It is
also necessary for all astrologers to thoroughly study the available literature on Nadi
astrology, though scanty, and attempt to collect as much information as possible for real
research.

Introduction
The Rashi is divided into several divisions such as Hora (1/2), Drekkana (1/3),
Chaturtamsa ( 1/4), Panchamsa (1/5), Shastamsa ( 1/6), Saptamsa (1/7), Ashtamsa (1/8),
Navamsha ( 1/9), Dashamsa (1/10), Dwadashamsa ( 1/12), Shodashamsa ( 1/16),
Vimshamsa 91/20), Siddhamsa (1/24), Bhamsa (1/27), Trimshamsa (1/30), Khavedamsa
(1/40), Akshavedamsa ( 1/40), Shastiamsa ( 1/60, Navamsha-Navamsha ( 1/81),
Navamsha-Dwadashamsa ( 1/108) etc, representing different aspects of life. It is known
how to prepare these different divisional charts though with some differences in the
approach. But there is no published literature for the correct utilization of these charts in
interpreting the results. Nadi Amsha is the subtlest in the division of the Rashi. Some of
the published literature on Nadi amshas has given the results. But nowhere it is published
how to prepare the Nadi amsha chart and to interpret the results.
In this article is given the explanation of the Nadi amshas, methodology to prepare the
Nadi amsha chart and interpretation of Nadi amsha chart, out of my research.
Nadi Amshas
By now, most of the readers know what is a Nadi amsha. However, for the benefit of
others, a Nadi amsha is 1/150th part of a rashi. The 30 degrees of rashi divided by 150
would give 12 minutes of arc (30 degrees multiplied by 60 and divided by 150 is equal to
12 minutes). Thus there are 150 Nadi amshas in a rashi and each Nadi amsha is of 12
minutes arc. If, on an average, 2 hours duration is taken for each rashi, it amounts to 48
seconds in time duration (2 hours multiplied by 3600 and divided by 150 is equal to 48
seconds). These Nadi amshas are given different names to recognize their interval
periods.
The Nadi amshas are numbered in clockwise direction in moveable rashis from beginning
to end of rashi. In fixed rashis they begin from end to beginning of rashi anti-clockwise.
In dual rashis, they begin from middle of rashi, to the end of rashi then continue from
beginning of rashi and counted upto the middle of rashi. For example, in Aries moveable
rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha, named Vasudha, is from 0 degrees to 0 degrees 12 minutes, the
2nd Nadi amsha is from 0 degrees 12 minutes to 0degrees 24 minutes and so on till the
150th Nadi amsha is from 29 degrees 48 minutes to 30 degrees. In Taurus fixed rashi, the
1st Nadi amsha of Vasudha is from 29 degrees 48 minutes to 30 degrees, the 2nd one
from 29 degrees 36 minutes to 29 degrees 48 minutes and so on till the last 150th Nadi
amsha is from 0 degrees to 0 degrees 12 minutes. In Gemini dual rashi, the 1st Nadi
amsha of Vasudha is from the middle 15 degrees to 15 degrees 12 minutes, the 2nd one
from 15 degrees 12 minutes to 15 degrees 24 minutes and so on till the 75th Nadi amsha
is from 29 degrees 48 minutes to 30 degrees and then the 76th Nadi amsha starts from the
beginning of 0 degrees to 0 degrees 12 minutes, the 77th from 0 degrees 12 minutes to 0
degrees 24 minutes and so on till the 150th one is from 14 degrees 48 minutes to 15
degrees. Thus it can be seen that 1st Nadi amsha in Aries, the 150th Nadi amsha in Taurus
and the 76th Nadi amsha in Gemini are the same. But it does not seem logical to apply
this to all moveable, fixed and dual rashis. There are four sets of moveable, fixed and
dual rashis in the zodiac. They are Aries-Taurus-Gemini, Cancer-Leo-Virgo, Libra-
Scorpio-Sagittarius, and Capricorn-Aquarius-Pisces. The above logic applies only within
each set. The 1st Nadi amsha of Cancer, 150th Nadi amsha of Leo, the 76th Nadi amsha
of Virgo would be the same. The 1st Nadi amsha of Libra, the 150th Nadi amsha of
Scorpio, the 76th Nadi amsha of Sagittarius would-be the same. The 1st Nadi amsha of
Capricorn, the 150th Nadi amsha of Aquarius, the 76th adi amsha of Pisces would be the
same.
Moveable Rashis
In moveable rashis, the Nadi amshas are counted clockwise from the beginning to the end
of the rashi. Hence in Aries moveable rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha falls in Aries itself, the
2nd I Taurus, the 3rd in Gemini and so on till the 150thfall in Virgo. In Cancer moveable
rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha falls in Cancer, the 2nd in Leo, the 3rd in Virgo and so on till
the last 150th falls in Sagittarius. In Libra moveable rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha falls in
Libra, the 2nd in Scorpio, the 3rd in Sagittarius and so on till the 150th falls in Pisces. In
Capricorn moveable rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha falls in Capricorn, the 2nd in Aquarius, the
3rd in Pisces and so on till the 150th falls in Gemini. That means, if Ascendant (lagna) or
any other planet in rashi chart in Aries rashi is in 1st Nadi amsha of 0 degrees to 0
degrees 12 minutes, it falls in Aries rashi itself in Nadi amsha chart, if from 0-12 to 0-24
it falls in Taurus in Nadi chart, and so on till if it is between 29-48 to 39 degrees it should
be place in Virgo in Nadi chart. Similarly the ascendant or any other planet in Cancer,
Libra or Capricorn in rashi chart should be place in Nadi chart depending on the degrees
and minutes in rashi chart and the number of the Nadi amsha.
Fixed Rashis
In fixed rashis, the Nadi amshas are counted anti-clockwise from the end to the beginning
of the rashi. In Taurus fixed rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha of 29-48 to 30 degrees is the same
as the 150th Nadi amsha of 29-48 to 30 degrees in Aries moveable rashi. The 150th Nadi
amsha in Taurus from 0 degrees to 0-0:12 is the same as the 1srt Nadi amsha of 0 degrees
to 0-0:12 in Aries. As already explained above, 150th Nadi amsha of Aries falls in Virgo
and 1st falls in Aries. Therefore, the 1st Nadi amsha of Taurus should start from Virgo
and go anti-clockwise, the 2nd from 29-36 to 29-48 in Leo and so on till the 150th of 0
degrees to 0-0:12 falls in Aries. Suppose if ascendant or any planet id in 10 -58 in Taurus,
it falls in the 96th Nadi amsha in Taurus from 10-48 to 11 degrees and so count 96 anti-
clockwise from Virgo, which would be Libra. Therefore, the ascendant or any planet in
10-58 in Taurus in rashi chart should be placed in Libra in Nadi amsha chart.
Similarly in the third set of Libra-Scorpio-Sagittarius, the 150th Nadi amsha of Libra falls
in Pisces and so the counting for Nadi amshas in Scorpio should start from Pisces anti-
clockwise. F ascendant or any planet is in 10-58 in Scorpio, which would be the 96th
Nadi amsha and so count 96 anti-clockwise from Pisces, which would be Aries.
Therefore, the ascendant or any planet in 10-58 in Scorpio in rashi chart should be placed
in Aries in Nadi amsha chart.
Similarly in the fourth set of Capricorn-Aquarius-Pisces, the counting for Nadi amshas in
Aquarius shold start form Gemini which is the 150th in Capricorn. If ascendant or any
planet were in 24-40 in Aquarius, it would be in 27th Nadi amsha and so count 27 anti-
clockwise from Gemini, which would be Aries. Therefore the ascendant or any planet in
24-40 in Aquarius in rashi chart should be placed in Aries in Nadi amsha chart.
Thus the crux is that if the ascendant of any planet is in Taurus, the counting of Nadi
amsha of that should start from Virgo anti-clockwise, if in Leo start counting from
Sagittarius anti-clockwise, if in Scorpio start counting from Pisces anti-clockwise and if
in Aquarius start counting from Gemini anti-clockwise.
Dual Rashis
In dual rashis, the Nadi amshas are counted clockwise from the middle to the end of the
rashi and then counting continued from the beginning to the middle of the rashi. In
Gemini dual rashi, the 1st Nadi amsha of 15 to 15-12 is the same as the 76th Nadi amsha
of 15 to 15-12 in Aries moveable rashi. The 75th Nadi amsha of Gemini from 29-48 to 30
degrees is same as the 150th in Aries. The 76th Nadi amsha in Gemini from 0 degrees to
0-12 is same as the 1srt in Aries. The 150th Nadi amsha in Gemini from 14-48 to 15
degrees is same as the 75th in Aries. As already seen in Aries, the 76th Nadi amsha falls
in Cancer, the 150th in Virgo, and the 1srt in Aries and the 75th in Gemini. So the 1st
Nadi amsha in Gemini should fall in Cancer, 75th in Virgo, 76th in Aries and 150th in
Gemini. So the counting of Nadi amshas in Gemini should start form Cancer clockwise
from the 1srt Nadi amsha till the 75th in Virgo. The 76th in Gemini should start
clockwise from Aries till the 150th in Gemini. Suppose the ascendant or any planet is in
18-27 in Gemini, it falls in the 18th Nadi amsha in Gemini from 18-24 to18-36 and so
count 18 clockwise from Cancer, which would be Sagittarius. Therefore, the ascendant or
any planet in 18-27 in Gemini in rashi chart should be placed in Sagittarius in Nadi chart.
Suppose the ascendant or any planet is in 1-10 in Gemini, it falls in the 82nd Nadi amsha
in Gemini from 1 degree to 1-12 and so count 82 clockwise from Aries taking 76 as
Aries, which would be Virgo. Therefore the ascendant or any planet in 1-10 in Gemini in
rashi chart should be placed in Virgo in Nadi chart.
Suppose the ascendant or any planet is in 1-10 in Virgo, it falls in the 82nf Nadi amsha in
Virgo and so count 82 clockwise from Cancer taking 76 as Cancer, which would be
Sagittarius. Therefore the ascendant or any planet in 1-10 in Virgo in rashi chart should
be place in Sagittarius in Nadi chart.
Similarly in the third set of Libra-Scorpio-Sagittarius, the 1st Nadi amsha in Sagittarius is
same as the 76th in Libra, the 75th in Sagittarius is same as 150th in Libra, 76th in
Sagittarius is same as 1st in Libra and the 150th in Sagittarius is same s 75th in Libra.
The 76th in Libra falls in Capricorn. So the counting of Nadi amshas in Sagittarius from
1st to 75th should start clockwise from Capricorn till the 75th in Pisces. The 76th
Sagittarius should start clockwise from Libra till the 150th in Sagittarius. Suppose if the
ascendant or any planet is in 18-27 in Sagittarius, it falls in the 18th Nadi amsha of
Sagittarius and so count 18 from Capricorn clockwise, which would be Gemini.
Therefore the ascendant or any planet in Sagittarius in 18-27 in rashi chart should be
placed in Gemini in Nadi chart. Suppose if the ascendant or any planet is in 1-10 in
Sagittarius, it falls in 82nd Nadi amsha in Sagittarius and so count 82from Libra
clockwise taking 786 as Libra, which would be Pisces and therefore should be place n
Pisces in Nadi chart.
Rasi Chart: Libra-Ascendant 5-54, Venus 7-4, Rahu 27-16; Capricorn- moon 20-9;
Aquarius- Jupiter 2-7; Pisces- Saturn 23-51; Aries- Ketu 27-16; Leo- Mercury 5-59, Mars
6-33, Sun 20-51
The above rashi and Nadi charts are broadly analyzed to check which one would give
better interpretation.
In the rashi chart, the 10th house is vacant aspected by the 10th lord Moon. The 10th
lords in 4th alone in Moon star without any aspects from any other planet. From this, it is
difficult to interpret his activities in Defence research, astrology and Vedanta. Venus in
Libra ascendant in own house has not given any proficiency in his musical interests. The
Moon in 4th, the 4th not aspected by any planet and the 4th lord Saturn in 6th house
aspected by Mars should have obstructed having his own house, vehicles and education.
Jupiter in 5th house aspected by Sun, Mercury and Mars and the 5th lord Saturn in 6th
house with exchange (parivartana) with Jupiter should have given more children. The 2nd
lord Mars, 9th lord Mercury and 11th lord Sun in 11th should have given big wealth and
prosperity. Ascendant lord Venus in the ascendant and 6th lord Jupiter In 5th with
exchange with Saturn should have given good health. The 9th and 12th lord Mercury with
enemy mars should have obstructed his travels.
In the Nadi chart, Saturn and Mercury in 10th house, 10th and 1st lord Jupiter in Scorpio
of Mars with exchange with Mars would give better interpretation about his activities in
Defense research, astrology and Vedanta. Debilitated Venus has not given much progress
in musical pursuits. The 4th house aspected by 4th lord Mercury, 2nd and 9th lord mars,
11th lord Saturn has given good house, vehicles and education. The 5th house aspected
by Jupiter and 5th lord Moon exalted has given one son. The 2nd and 9th lord Mars in
ascendant associated with 6th lord Sun and 11th and 12th lord Saturn have given
moderate wealth and prosperity. The 6th lord Sun in ascendant aspected by 8th lord
debilitated Venus has given moderate health though ascendant lord Jupiter aspecting the
ascendant. Jupiter in 9th and 9th lord Mars in ascendant with exchange with ascendant
lord Jupiter and 12th aspected by 11th and 12th lord Saturn has given the travels.
The transits of planets in both the charts can also be compared to check the results though
it is not done here.
Thus from the above broad analysis the Nadi chart gives better interpretation than the
rashi chart.
Conclusion
Since the Nadi amshas differentiate upto 48 seconds in birth time, it is the subtlest
available means to interpret better results. When there is no published literature to
correctly interpret the all the other known divisional charts, particularly whether lordship
of houses can be taken or not in the divisional charts, it is not claimed that the analysis of
the Nadi chart as given above is correct. It is also not claimed that the above
methodology to prepare the Nadi chart is correct. The idea is writing this article is to
stimulate the experts astrology to come out with better research to delve deep into this
subject to interpret better results by studying all the divisional charts including the
subtlest Nadi amsha chart and to publish the same for the benefit of others. The subject of
astrology is already having its natural death with superficial knowledge and
interpretations of commercial interest and without any deep research and published
literature. It is an earnest request once again to all the astrologers and other government
and private organizations to do deep research in astrology and publish the same to revive
this great Divine subject.

Nadi Amshas and their Order in Various Rashis
The following table is attached to my article "A Note on Nadi Amshas" by the magazine
"Vedic astrology" on their own. It is likely that the names may differ by some others.

INTRODUCTION
I would like to present a case study of the results of the Nadi Astrology taken from
different Nadi Astrologers in connection with the marriage of my son, comparing them
with actual happened in accordance with the natal chart The Nadi Astrologers will read
the results from the old palm leaves mostly Tamil and Sanskrit, after checking and
matching several aspects of the individuals such as name, name of parents, brothers and
sisters, others salient important events etc.
NATAL CHART
The details of the natal chart with Lahiris Ayanamsa and Ramans 110-year ephemeris is
as follows;
22 years 10 months 1`6th day destined to get the Rishi Vaya on this particular day on this
aspect of Vivahakanda, Aslesha Star, Guru after entering Meena rasi, vivaha yoga starts,
Mesha Lagna, 7th lord Venus indicate beautiful wife, Guru in Navamsa Rasi as per
gochara between 25 Oct 87 to 30 Mar 88 marriage proposal will take place. Between
23rd birth day before 24th birth day marriage Lakshmi Sambhandhanama patni, she will
be from a far away place but at the time of marriage the family will have moved into the
same city. She will be from a good family, educated. For both of them the age difference
will be a little more than two years. In the 5th house because of Mars, destined to have 2
sons and a daughter and all the children will come in the Venus dasa period.
In continuation of earlier reading taken on 11 Oct 1987, for Aslesha Nakshatra for Jataka,
the coming 12 days is an opportune time for the right proposal to come and for marriage
fixation. Before 120 days the marriage will take place. Thefname of the girl will be
related to Lakshmi. She will have one brother and sister, The marriage fixation will come
easily by pooja to remove doshas associated with Vivahakaraka and Vivhasthana and also
the kendradhipatya dosha. The following mantara can be done for thought process
correction or Sathbuddi Prabhadoana and the obstacles in the Adhi Daivike realm.
Whatever proposals that you receive in the coming 12 days will have greater potential for
settlement. Sumangali pooja should be done on Friday with panchaphala, vastra and
dakshina and daana to 2 or 5 elderly sumangalis to remove pratibandhaka dosham.
Kamesh will marry a girl whose name is related to that Lakshmi such as Rama, Padma
etc. Her father will be a high official in central Government name relating to Vishnu and
mother Parvathi-Brides mother will have two pregnancies out of which bride will be the
only daughter. She will be beautiful, white in complexion, having considerable height. He
will marry in August 1990. One match will fail and the second one will succeed. The
match will be from Hyderabad itself, perhaps from relatives.
Till now the marriage has not taken place. Because of Poorvajanma papa and Navagraha
dosha, marriage is getting delayed and some circumstances are going against him. To
avoid the doshas some shanti is to be done. Now he is running 27th year. 27th year
marriage on 28th February. Bride side people will come on their own seeking alliance for
his marriage. Bride will have good status, good family background, bride is not her
mothers first child, brides parents had left their previous place and settled in a second
place, Bride is a graduate, good face, likes discipline and manners she is clever also. He
will get a girl who will have similar graha doshas as he has got. The girl will have a mark
or mole on the neck, name of the girl similar to Tirumala range the match will come from
north or north- eastern direction. There will be open land next the brides house. The
brides house may face north with street in front in the east -west. In his 29th year birth of
a son, by 35thyear one son and one daughter will be born. His children will have good
education. At 54th year his wife will be come sick. By 60th year his children will get
settled. In his previous birth he misbehaved with the chastity of his sister-in-law and
usurped all the properties of his brother, No belief in God, so in this janma he will have
no brothers and sisters. He will be alone. So Parihara and Shanti is to be done. On
Monday, pooja for Devas Amba, Muruga, Vinayaka, Siva, Silk clothes will have to be
given to a couple, Seven types of fruits, milk, honey etc. to be given to the Nadi
astrologer 21 Sumangalis are to be honoured, 21 times Pooja on Sunday to Ammavaru
.No rebirth for this native.
CONCLUSION
Therefore it is concluded that though the natal chart is studied it is better to get the Nadi
results also and then judiciously merge the predictions to get some valuable indications
and to arrive at suitable decisions regarding settling marriages, if astrology is to be
followed for the purpose of guidance. Otherwise of-course, it can be left with the saying
Marriages are made in Heaven or Runanubhandha Rupena Pasu Patni Sutalay.
Marriage Age - A Nadi Method
A lecture given on 3rd July, 2005 at Indian Council of Astrological Sciences(ICAS),
Hyderabad, India.
Introduction
Marriage is a landmark in life and many want to know about it. Marriage like any other
event in one's life requires a positive intermediary influence to allow its fructification. It
is necessary that the nativity should indicate marriage as such. Otherwise, simply timing
the possible date of marriage will go in vain. However, it is assumed that in most cases in
this mundane practical materialistic world there is no denial of marriage, which also
works as a part of Karma or duty.
For early marriage, delayed marriage, denial of marriage, multiple marriages, timing the
event of marriage, marriage etc, there are many rules given by the ancient Rishis and the
modern astrologers like Late Shri R.Santhanam, Late Shri D.V.Subbarao, Late
Dr.B.V.Raman, Late Shri Krishnamurthy, Shri H.R.Shankar, Shri R.G.Rao etc. based on
Vimsottari dasa system, Kalachakra dasa system, Venus, Moon, houses 1,2,4,5,7,12 and
their lords, navamsa, Krishnamurthy Paddhathi (KP), transits, nadi astrology etc. It is not
denied that these rules and systems are not correct but it would be a Herculean task to
check and apply these rules and systems to arrive at the timing of the event of marriage.
Therefore, it is felt that out of these many rules and systems a minimum set of rules and
systems could be selected with thumb rules to arrive at least at the probable age for the
event of marriage, without going into many details at the outset. The idea is not to
question the many rules and systems given and dilute the subject, but to simply the
procedure for quickly recognizing the probable marriage age rejecting the other
unsuitable and unproductive ages so that a better of timing of marriage event can be
worked in detail later on with this probable marriage age. In this connection the method
given by Shri Shankar is quite handy.
In these days, in general, the marriage age can start from 21 and up to 28 or so can be
considered as a timely marriage and beyond such a phase it can be deemed as delayed
one. Of course, there can be limitations for marriage age imposed by social and family
customs, conventions, circumstances, responsibilities, laws of country, religious
stipulations etc.
A Nadi Method
Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus
In nadi astrology, Saturn is considered as presiding over the portfolio of Karma or duty as
Karma Karaka.
Saturn(significator) decides the fate and duties of the individuals born in this world
depending on Saturn's interaction with other karaka planets. In performing such duties
presided over and decided by Saturn the presiding deity, there will help and cooperation
of other planets to Saturn whether this cooperation will prove beneficial or harmful to the
native depends upon the planetary configurations I the native's birth chart and during
transits. Jupiter is the other main major planet representing the life force or Jeeva whose
interaction with the event karaka planet is important for fructification of the event. Rahu
and Ketu are the other major planets generally obstructing the event karaka planet. Mars
is taken as the karaka planet for marriage event or for the marital knot . Marital knot as
distinctly different from the concept of marital bliss or wretchedness of marital life. How
a marriage event manifests has no bearing on how life develops in the context of the
marital aspect. Contributory factors culminating in the marriage event cease to have any
further play or contribution thereafter. Under the nadi method, Venus is depicted as
karaka for marital life which can develop into marital bliss or crucible for suffering.
Transits
In nadi astrology, transits of Saturn and Jupiter are mainly considered connecting the
karaka planet of an event in the birth chart for timing the event. Since Mars is the karaka
planet for marriage event, the interaction of Saturn and Jupiter with mars during their
transit becomes opportune for the marriage event to occur. The 7th sign depicts partner of
the native, the one with whom the marital knot is tied and the transits of Saturn and
Jupiter with the 7th sign from Mars also becomes opportune. Jupiter and Saturn interact
with natal Mars in birth chart when they transit over these signs or aspect these signs.
Jupiter transits each sign for about an year and Saturn transits each sign for about 2 1/2
years. It can be seen that in one's life span, Jupiter and Saturn would be interacting with
the sensitive point of marital knot periodically at regular cyclic transits. While it is
prerequisite that Saturn and Jupiter in their transit interact with mars natal position to
bring about marriage event, it does not follow that every time Jupiter and Saturn interact
with marital knot sensitive point it would be necessarily result in the marriage event. The
task, therefore, is to elect the particular transit of Saturn and Jupiter out of the series of
transits by process of eliminating unproductive transits. The step in this direction is to
check whether the karaka for marriage event mars comes under situations to cause delay
or obstruction. Rahu's interaction with Mars can cause impediments or delay in marriage.
Symbolically , Mars is considered as being swallowed by Rahu.
Change of Sign
In nadi astrology, whenever a planet is retrograde in a sign, it is considered to be in the
previous sign also. When Saturn is in the beginning of a sign upto about 3 degrees and
Jupiter up to about 1 degree, they are taken to be in the previous sign. When two planets
in parivartana (exchange of signs) they are taken to be in their own signs.
Navamsa
In nadi astrology, the transit of major planets is also considered in the navamsa chart in
the fructification of the event. Since navamsa chart is supposed to represent marriage
aspect, the transit of Saturn and Jupiter over the navemsa lagna and navamsa lagna lord is
considered as additional point for timing of marriage.
The following are the main rules for arriving at probable marriage age:
a. Jupiter during transit conjoins or aspects natal Mars or 7th sign from natal Mars.
b. Saturn during transit conjoins or aspects natal Mars or 7th sign from natal Mars.
c. Jupiter during transit conjoins or aspects navamsa lagna or navamsa lagna lord.
d. Saturn during transit conjoins or aspects navamsa lagna or navamsa lagna lord.
a. When Jupiter, Saturn or Mars is retrograde in birth chart in a particular sign, they
are to be considered to be in the previous sign also and age is to be counted from
there.
b. When Jupiter is in about 1 degree and Saturn is about 3 degrees in the beginning
of a sign, they are to be considered to be in the previous sign also as per the Vakya
Siddhanta followed by nadi astrology and age is to be counted from there.
c. When Rahu is with Mars or next sign to Mars, the 4th sign from mars would be
the sensitive point for interaction with transits of Jupiter, Saturn , Rahu.
d. When Rahu is in opposite sign to mars, the 4th sign from there, that is,. the 10th
sign form natal Mars is to be considered as the sensitive point.
e. When Mars is in parivartana ( exchange of signs) with another planet, Mars is to
be considered to be in own sign acting as the sensitive point.
f. When Mars is retrograde with Rahu, first Mars is to be place in the previous sign
and the 4th sign from there is to be considered as the sensitive point.
Chart 1:

Pisces, navamsa lagna lord Jupiter in Libra
At age 16, Jupiter transits in Libra aspecting 7th sign Gemini from natal Mars in
Sagittarius, Saturn transits in Virgo aspects 7th sign Gemini from natal mars in
Sagittarius. Transit Saturn also aspects navamsa lagna Pisces and Jupiter also transits
over navamsa lagna lord Jupiter in Libra.
Chart 2:

Lagna Scorpio, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn (retro) in Aquarius, Mars in Taurus, navamsa
lagna Aquarius, navamsa lagna lord Saturn in Capricorncorn.
At age 26, Jupiter transits in Taurus over natal Mars and also aspects navamsa lagna lord
Saturn in Capricorncorn, Saturn is taken to be in Capricorncorn being in retrograde in
Aquarius and counting age from Capricorncorn transits in Scorpio and aspects Mars in
Taurus and also aspects navamsa lagna lord Saturn in Capricorncorn.
Chart 3:

Scorpio, navamsa lagna lord mars in Gemini.
At age 25, Jupiter transiting in Aries aspects Mars in Leo (taken Leo since Mars in
retrograde in Virgo), Saturn transiting in Scorpio aspects Mars in Leo (Virgo retro) and
over navamsa lagna.
At age 26, Jupiter transiting in Taurus aspects Mars in Virgo (taking as it is ) and aspects
navamsa lagna , Saturn transiting in Sagittarius aspects Mars in Virgo (taking as it ) and
aspects navamsa lagna lord in Gemini.
Chart 4:
Male born 25 Feb 1961, 0927 hrs, 17N27, 78E33, Marriage 25 April 1993 (Age 32)

Lagna Aries, Jupiter 3 degrees 10 min., in Capricorncorn, Saturn 2 degrees 31 min., in
Capricorncorn, Mars in Gemini, navamsa lagna Gemini, navamsa lagna lord Venus in
Aquarius
At age 32, Jupiter transits in Leo and aspects 7th sign Sagittarius from natal mars in
Gemini., Saturn is at 2 degrees 31 min., in Capricorncorn and taken to be in Sagittarius
(nadi rule if Saturn is upto about 3 degrees in a sign considered as if in previous sign)
transits in Sagittarius and aspects mars in Gemini and navamsa lagna lord Venus in
Aquarius.
In this case, since it is considered as late marriage, other ages are also considered to
check why the marriage event was missed earlier. The Age Table in Appendix gives the
transits as per the thumb rule as well as per ephemeris. The signs and comments in the
brackets are as for the data from ephemeris for ready comparison.
It may be noted in the comments, at other ages, either Rahu obstructs Mars or Jupiter and
Saturn are not connected to Mars and hence the marriage event could not take place.
Whereas at age 32, in the case of the thumb rule, Jupiter and Saturn are connected to
Mars and Navamsa lagna lord and Rahu does not obstruct Mars and in the ephemeris data
Saturn in Aquarius is not connected to Mars.

Since Mars is with Rahu in Leo, the sensitive point is Scorpio, the 4th from Leo. At age
30, Jupiter transiting in Scorpio is over Mars, Saturn transiting in Taurus aspects Scorpio
Mars and both are also connected with navamsa lagna Taurus.
Chart 7:

At age 32, Jupiter transits in Aries (natal Jupiter is taken to be in Virgo only) aspects 7th
from Mars, Saturn transits in Scorpio aspects 7th from Mars, transits over navamsa lagna
and aspects navamsa lagna lord, if Jupiter is taken to be in Leo, Jupiter transits in Pisces
almost over Mars and aspects navamsa lagna.
NOTE: The twin with earlier navamsa lagna got married earlier.

twins.
Chart 11:
It was predicted in Jan 2005, when their parents asked about her marriage, that her
marriage would be in her 22/23 age, most probably at her 22 1/2 age.
Female born 30 Nov 1982, 0405 hrs, 17N23, 78E23, Marriage 1 June 2005
Lagna Libra, Jupiter in Scorpio, Saturn in Libra, Mars in Sagittarius, Rahu in
Gemini,Navamsa Lagna Capricorncorn, Namamsa Lagna lord in Scorpio.
Since Rahu is in 7th from Mars, take 4th from 7th ie., 10th from Mars in Sagittarius
Virgo as Sensitive point.
At age 23, Jupiter transits in Virgo over sensitive point in Virgo aspects Navamsa lagna,
Saturn transits over Cancer aspects sensitive point Virgo aspects Navamsa lagna.
Since Jupiter and Mars are in exchange of houses ( parivartana) taking Mars in Scorpio
and Jupiter in Sagittarius, at age 22 Jupiter transits in Virgo aspects 7th from Mars Taurus
aspects over Navamsa lagna, Saturn transits in Gemini almost aspects Mars in Scorpio
and Navamsa lagna lord and at age 23 transits in Cancer almost aspects 7th from Mars
aspects Navamsa lagna.
As per the actual ephemeris on the marriage day, Jupiter is retro in Virgo and Saturn just
entered Cancer and Jupiter being retro considered to be in Leo aspects Natal Mars in
Sagittarius and Saturn almost aspects.
Natal Mars and in fact at the time of fixing the marriage Saturn transits in Gemini aspects
Natal Mars.
Chart 12:
Male born 04 Feb 1946, 0742 hrs, 17N23, 78E 27, Marriage 07 May 1971 at 22:30 hrs
( Age 25)
Lagna Aquarius, Jupiter in Libra, Saturn Gemini9, Mars ( retro) Gemini, Rahu Gemini,
Navamsa lagna Scorpio, Navamsa lagna lord Aries.
Since Mars is Retrograde in Gemini and with Rahu, first consider Mars in Taurus and
then count 4th house from there ie Leo as the Sensitive point.
At age 25, Jupiter transits in Libra aspects 7th Aquarius from the sensitive point Leo,
aspect navamsa lagna lord; Saturn is considered to be in Taurus being retrograde in
Gemini transits Aquarius aspects 7th from sensitive point aspects navamsa lagna Scorpio
and navamsa lagna lord.
Conclusion
Many charts with birth data and marriage dates(88)are checked with this thumb rule
method and in 43 charts all the four rules are satisfied and in the rest also nearly 3 rules
are satisfied. It looks that this method gives better results compared to actual transits
taken from ephemeris for different ages which is also a tedious process. Therefore, the
thumb rule to count the ages from Jupiter, Saturn and Rahu can be followed to arrive at
the probable age for marriage. Shri Shankar should be thanked in indicating Mars as
marital knot karaka and transit of Jupiter connecting Mars for marriage timing. The
method is extended including transits of Saturn and Rahu connecting mars, navamsa
lagna and navamsa lagna lord, to select the probable age eliminating unproductive ages
due to Rahu's connection with Mars.
Marriage being the most auspicious and major event, there must be some allowance for
planets in transit to properly correlate the fixation of marriage and its actual ceremony.
Planets could have easily changed their position between these two phases. The transits at
the marriage fixation time also may satisfy the rules better than at the actual marriage
time.
All the readers are requested to study this thumb rule method with the birth data and the
marriage dates available with them along with the actual transits as per ephemeris. They
should do further research to formulate better rules to arrive at more appropriate results
for marriage timing of not only marriage age but also up to the marriage month and date
in that marriage age.

Nadi Astrology for Marriage
The following article was published in The Times of Astrology magazine New Delhi Jan
2002.
NATAL CHART
The details of the natal chart with Lahiris Ayanamsa and Ramans 110-year ephemeris is
as follows;
Birth chart
Prepare the birth chart for this rectified birth time, placing the lagna and planets in
respective rasis with their degrees in order.
Problems in Predictions
The following article was published in "The Times of Astrology" magazine Jan '99, New
Delhi, India.
The intention of this article is not that the senior astrologers would not know the
problems in giving accurate predictions, but to once again recapitulate the same while
introducing the intricacies to the beginners in this subject.
Ayanamsha
In the Hindu (Vedic) astrology, the Nirayana system is used to calculate the Lagna
(Ascendant) and longitudes of planets, by deducting the Ayanamsha from Sayana system
positions. The popular ayanamshas used are of Lahiri, Raman and Krishnamurthy (K. P.).
The differences in ayanamshas vary from about 6 minutes to 1 degree 30 minutes in these
systems. As a typical case, in year 1938 the ayanamshas are about Lahiri 23-00, Raman
21-33 and K. P 22-54. When the Lagna and the planets are at the edge of a Rashi (sign),
these three ayanamshas may give different lagnas and planetary positions in the rashis. If
not in the Rashi chart, they will definitely affect the other Varga (divisional) charts,
particularly the Shatshiamsha (1/60 part = 30 minutes) chart. If one can go into the Nadi
amsha ( 1/150 part=12 minutes), the situation will be definitely the worst.
In this connection, our respected late Sri R. Santhanam states in is book Deva Keralam:
To wit, if a planet, say Saturn is in Aries 19-59 as per Lahiri Ayanamsha, another
Ayanamsha even with a small difference of minus 2' of arc can place Saturn somewhat
ahead and give it Libra navamsha instead of Virgo navamsha due to Lahiri. Saturn even
in Aries Rashi with Libra navamsha protects one from heart ailments, gives him longevity
and helps him progress in his calling. The same Saturn with Aries sign position but in
Virgo navamsha makes him wholly unreliable and makes him a victim of some sort of
diseases of hands and legs. This difference could be easily located by an experienced
astrologer. Same is the case with other divisions including navamsha.
Also, in this connection, it may also be worthwhile to quote from the June 1991
Grahavani journal (of Hyderabad, AP., India):
According to almost all ephemeris, Saturn had gone into retrogression and entered
Dhanus (Sagittarius) and again reentered Makara (Capricorn) on 15 December 1990. But
according to Vakya Panchanga (ephemeris) followed by Nadi astrologers in South India,
Saturn entered Makara on 10 February 1991, that is, a difference of 55 days. Then what is
the fate of the children born between 15 Dec 1990 to 10 Feb 1991, whether Saturn is to
be placed in Dhanus or Makara. According to Vakya Panchanga, such a situation is
common for Saturn whenever it retrogrades or entering the signs, there will be a
difference of nearly 90 days, and for Jupiter 15 days and for fast moving planets Budha
(Mercury), Sukra (Venus) for 1 to 3 days will be there. How to reconcile this position is
for scholars in the science to decide. All Nadi literature was based on Vakya Panchanga
and the predictions arrived on such calculations are 80% coming true. In view of the
different Graha Gathis (planetary movements) even the horoscope charts prepared
through computers are of no use.
Dasa Systems
Let us see the planetary Dasa systems (progressions) used by Hindu astrologers. The
most popular and generally used system by many astrologers is the Vimshottari Dasa
system of 120 years with Maha Dasa (main planet period), Antar-dasa (sub period),
Pratyantar Dasa (sub sub period) and other minor periods called Vidasa and
Sukshma/Prana Dasa. By adopting different ayanamshas, the balance of Maha Dasa at
birth in Vimshottari system is likely to be different to a period of about 2 years when
major periods of planets operate and all the subsequent periods will accordingly vary.
Then obviously it would be very difficult to correlate particular life event during a
particular Dasa period even considered upto the minutest level. Mostly, in addition, some
planet or other in one of the major/minor periods is somehow gets connected to the
particular event to be checked and the astrologer will satisfy himself for his prediction for
the event in that Dasa and he will not bother to check that the same event can be
predicted in some other Dasa also.
In this connection let me quote from the famous astrologer Dr. B. V. Raman from his
editorial in December 1977 in the Astrological magazine:
From what I have said hitherto, you will notice that Nadi astrology gives an important
place to the basic pattern of the horoscope revealed by Dwadasamsha (1/12 division) for
a general outline and Nadi amsha (1/150 part) for a comprehensive survey. The details
such as attainment of rank, position and status, success, occupation etc. are filled in by
the planets and the various Yogas or typical combinations formed by them. In actual
practice, these principles can be easily demonstrated by applying them to well known
horoscopes. But that will only be a post-mortem study. After an event has happened, we
can justify it in some way or the other, but it is in the prior application of these principles
and prediction of events to happen in future that the real value of astrology lies.
In this connection, let me quote from the book Hindu Astrology by Shri Shil Ponde:
The normal span of life for all persons born in the Shukla Paksha, or between New Moon
and Full Moon, should be 120 years. That of persons born in Krishna Paksha, between
full Moon and new Moon, should be 108 years. It was not at all extraordinary for men
and women in ancient civilization to live longer than this normal span, but the nervous
tension and toxic poisons which are the concomitants of modern civilization have cut
down the normal span of life considerably. Vimshottari Dasa system (120 Years) is to be
used for all persons born between new Moon and full Moon and the Ashtottari Dasa
system (108 years) is to be used for persons born between the full Moon and the new
Moon, that is, during the waning period of the Moon.
In addition, Shri Shil Ponde also states that a slightly different Ayanamsha is to be used
for the position of the Moon, only when dealing with planetary periods and for
determining the true position of the Moon in the fixed zodiac and it is to be used instead
of the regular Ayanamsha correction, not in addition to it. As a hypothetical case, he
states that " instead of making the Krishna Paksha, between full Moon and new Moon,
should be 108 years. It was not at all extraordinary for men and women in ancient
civilization to live longer than this normal span, but the nervous tension and to ice
poisons which are the concomitants of modern civilization have cut down the normal
span of life considerably. Vimshottari Dasa system (120 Years) is to be used for all
persons born between new Moon and full Moon and the Ashtottari Dasa system (108
years) is to be used for others. He gives 19-38 for year 1933 whereas Lahiri's gives 22-
55, a difference of about 3 degrees. I may also state here that Sage Satyacharya, father of
Nadi Astrology, states that the Dasa system should be taken from the Moon or Lang
whichever is stronger.
Late Sri R. Santhanam states in his book Deva Keralam that " the aspect as a rule should
be seen in rashi chart only, not in navamsha and other charts, for aspects emanate only by
longitudinal distances". In his book Jyotisha Siddhamthamu late Sri D. V. Subbarao states
that " the lordships of bhavas and their position in Varga charts is not to be considered in
Varga charts, the bhava lords and their position is to be judicially taken only from Bhava
chart, in Varga charts the position of the Lagna lord of that Varga is important. " Whereas,
in her article in June 1986 the Astrological magazine, Smt Gayatri Devi Vasudev states "
the point is not to decry Parasari system has having limitations but to stress that
reckoning aspects in navamsha too, and subjecting navamsha to an analysis similar to
rashi seem to make matters clearer". She also quotes Dr. B. V. Raman regarding
navamsha " it is the pivot on which the horoscope revolves, every combination
mentioned should be applied to the rashi, bhava and navamsha charts and then a
conclusion drawn".
I may mention here that nowhere it is published specifically how to use these various
Varga charts and what would be the results for various permutations and combinations for
different charts. For example, what would be the type of life pattern for Aries Lagna in
rashi chart with the different nine lagnas in navamsha chart from Aries to Sagittarius, for
Taurus Lagna in rashi chart with different nine navamsha lagnas from Capricorn to Virgo
etc. and extending the same logic for various other permutations and combinations to the
level of different Shatshiamshas each of 30' duration or still the minutest Nadi amsha
division of 12' arc duration. Of course, there is some literature available giving what each
2 1/2 degree in each bhava (Dwadasamsha) represents and what would be the Karmic
pattern of each Shatshiamsha, independently without linking to the rashi chart and other
Varga charts and planetary positions. Some of the astrologers may be having ancient
literature giving life patterns dealing with planetary positions along with permutations
and combinations of various Varga charts upto the level of Nadi amshas, but they will not
be publishing their secret treasure for the benefit of others and for the research in the
subject.
Special Lagnas/aspects
There are also many special lagnas such as Ghatika Lagna, Vighatika Lagna, Bhava
Lagna, Arudha Lagna, Atmakaraka Lagna, Upapada Lagna etc., aspects of planets from
one rashi to another rashi (Jaimini system), and as per some Nadi rulings a retrograde
planet aspects the previous house and planets aspect the trines from them etc.
Nadi Literature
In his 3 volumes of book Nadi Jyotisha-A stellar system of astrology published in 1954
(out of print), late Sri R. Gopalakrishna Rao (Meena) had given importance only to the
constellation lords of the planets as Jeeva and Shareera planets and their Satwik (pure),
Rajasik (restless) and Tamasik (dull/aggressive) gunas (qualities). Shri Ratanlal in his
book Nadi system of prediction (stellar theory) published in 1983 and late Sri N. V.
Raghavachary (Meena II) in his book Practical Stellar astrology (based on Nadi
principles) published in 1995 Almost followed the original books by Sri R. Goplakrishna
Rao. Even the Krishnamurthy Paddhathi is also an tension of what is stated by Sri R.
Gopalakrishna Rao. Sri R. G. Rao of Bangalore. India in his book Bhrugu Nandi Nadi
had given interpretation of Nadi principles on the basis of Karakatwas (signification) of
planets only and Jupiter transits only ï 7 3 irrespective of Lagna. Late Sri R. Santhanam
in his volumes of Deva Keralam (Chandra Kala Nadi) gave many useful rules of Nadi
astrology.
The Astrological magazine of Bangalore, India has been publishing general life patterns
for each Nadi amsha as per Dhruva Nadi and Nandi Nadi. All these available Nadi
literature is still scanty only without giving any real clues.
Longevity
There are also many systems such as Pindayu, Amshayu, Jeevasarmayu, Ashtakavargayu
etc. for calculating the longevity, which may give
different longevities.
Transits
There are also many views on the transit system of planets from natal Moon, Lagna,
planets in rashis, in Nakshatra, in navamsha, over natal planets, vedha etc. There are
Varsha Phala(progressed chart) to erect the chart of progression based on Sun position
every year same as at natal chart, Dinavarsha Paddhati of one degree is one year with
subtle aspects just as western system applied on Sayana chart, Tajaka system etc.
Others
There are also Ashtakavarga method, Rajayogas, planetary shadbalas (6 fold strength),
bhava balas, Vimsopoka planetary strengths, Upagrahas (Gulika, Mandi
etc.), eclipses etc. There are also many rules given by many sages and astrologers for an
event to happen, which it is humanly impossible to remember all these rules and apply.
Even the present Nadi astrologers who read from their ancient palm leaves mostly give
predictions age wise only by whatever method they follow and those future predictions
also seem to be not correctly coming true in most cases, though the past events seem to
be mostly true.
Conclusion
I might have missed some more points but in view of the above quoted points I wonder
whether any astrologer can really predict any specific event on a particular time purely
from astrological point of view, without any other intuition techniques or through any
other secret literature such as Nadi Grantha available with him. I would like to quote here
Dr. B. V. Raman in his letter to me on 4 December 1993 that
Astrology is a subject where not only an insight into its techniques is needed but also
certain amount of intuition. Experience can gradually make appreciate the nuances of the
predictive art. The literature available on Nadi astrology in the market could only be of
academic interest. They do not give one an insight into the technique of the system. The
late Mr. Gopalakrishna Rao (Meena) has given the Nadi method as revealed by his Guru
in his book Nadi Jyotisha. But unfortunately the book has been out of print for a long
time.
The whole problem in astrological prediction is mainly due to lack of sufficient literature
in astrology with correct understanding of the principles. In ancient times Gurukulam
system of teaching was prevalent and much facilities were not available to record or write
down the details of the principles taught with their specific interpretations and as such the
rules in the brief Sanskrit slokas of ancient times can possibly be mistranslated and
misunderstood nowadays. The astrologers nowadays mostly do not collect, maintain data
of the complete life pattern events of the charts of their clients and others, do research
and discuss openly with others. Some of them publish some specific past events only by
justifying by some method or other, which mostly will not coincide when applied to some
other similar chart. It may be appreciated how difficult it is to interpret the twins charts or
those born very closely, wherein also the events and timings vary considerably. Most of
the astrologers are lucky that they do not face similar charts for interpretation at the same
time.
As a former scientist, engineer and manager, I do realize that even in the fields of the
present most modern sciences and technologies such as medicine, space travel etc.,
inspite of much research, availability of literature and many methods of approach, there
are still failures beyond the scope of human being, but still the progress is fantastic since
many nations take interest in those specific areas. Whereas the subject of Astrology is
mostly a neglected area for whatever reasons may be and no Governmental agency is
interested in pursuing the research in this subject. No astrologer is also interested in the
research in astrology and none of the astrological associations / federations / groups /
conferences / trusts / magazines do strive for research to evolve new specific rules, rather
new Nadi Grantha, suitable to modern times and different countries. The strange thing is
that many consult an astrologer when they are in trouble and do not come forward to help
to do research in this subject. Such being the case, this subject of astrology is sure to have
its natural death in due course, though surviving in its superficial way of knowledge.
I sincerely wish that the Governments, the rich individuals, the trusts, the rich Swamis
etc. should come forward and encourage research in Astrology by giving necessary funds
to the organizations.

Introduction
1. By and large, a person will be a saint or a scientist. But Swami Jnananada was both a
saint and a scientist. He did almost 10 years of penance meditations in Himalayas. Later
he went abroad and took Doctorate degrees with his background of school education
only. He returned to India, worked as assistant director in National physical laboratory
and started nuclear department as head and professor in Andhra University. A book on
him entitled “The Saint and The Scientist” was published by the University Resources
Press, Washington, USA in 1992.

3. In Bhava chart (Sripathi Paddhati), Saturn is in 11th Bhava and there is no change for
other planets. This is prepared in a computer with Lahiri ayanamsa.
Family
5. The original name of Swami Jnanananda is Lakshmi Narasimha Raju. Father is
Bhupatiraju Rama Raju, Mother is Seethayamma. Sri Swamiji is the first born with one
own sister and step-2 brothers and sisters.
Akasha Tatwa
6. For those born in Akasha tatwa, the natural characteristics are joy, delight, happiness,
pleasure, satisfaction, gratification, faith in good periods, liberality, generosity,
augmentation, growth, addition, improvement, progress, success, prosperity, fullness,
consciousness of possession of means or strength, absence of anxiety, fear or

have depressions, dissipating energy. They will have natural confidence, reliance, mental
and physical strength. They will be interested in education in philosophy, finance, law
and writings. They will have fame and name. Poets, lawyers, yogis, persons with divine
strength, persons who talk decisively, generous persons, persons who do not know secret
dealings, friendly persons are getting born in this tatwa.
Bhavas Analysis
Lagna
9.The lord of Sagittarius lagna is Jupiter. Jupiter and Mars are aspecting the lagna. Venus
is in lagna. Lagna is in Venus star. The lord of lagna Jupiter is in Venus star, in Mercury
navamsa in 11th with Mars. Mars is retrograde and 5th and 12th lord, Venus is 6th and
11th lord. Venus is in Sun star, in 2nd navamsa in Jupiter house. The Akasatatwa lord is
also Jupiter. The lagna karaka Sun is 9th lord. 10.For Sagittarius lagna, Jupiter is the
Preceptor of Devas(Gods), significator of knowledge, education. The demons preceptor
Venus is the giver of all Satras(sciences).Sun is the Atma (soul) karaka
(siginificator).Mercury is mild or gentle natured, endowed with understanding, intellect,
rational wise, sensible, shrewd and siginificator for education also. Energetic Mars is also
related to lagna.Swamiji has got all these characteristics.
2nd Bhava
11. Since in the 2nd bhava is Rahu,2nd lord Saturn is in 11th with aspect of retrograde
Mars,9th lord Sun,8th lord Moon.7th 10 lord Mercury and 2nd bhava karaka Jupiter is in
9th,though there will not be big aspirations for wealth, there will always be help for
getting money through some source when needed.
3rd Bhava
12.Since the 3rd bhava has got Jupiter aspect, the 3rd lord Saturn is in 11th with aspect of
brothers and sisters karaka Mars, there will be brothers and sisters.
4th Bhava
13. Since 4th lord Jupiter is in the star of 6t lord, he will born to the first wife of his
father. 14.Since the mother’s significator Moon in debilitated and aspected by retrograde
Mars, the mother’s health will not be satisfactory. There can be severe illness. She will be
yet courageous. 15.Since the education bhava 4th lord Jupiter is in 9th,Vidya
karakas(education significators)Jupiter and Mercury have got retrograde Mars aspect,
though there will be obstacles in education, he will have higher studies.
5th Bhava
16. Though the children 5th bhava has got Jupiter aspect, since the 5th lord mars is
retrograde and 12th lord with Saturn aspect and 8th lord Moon aspect, there will not be
children or happiness from children.
6th Bhava
17. Since Mars is in 6th bhava with Saturn aspect,8th lord Moon aspect and 6th lord
Venus in lagna, there are less chances for good health. Since lagna is aspected by lagna
lord Jupiter, major problems in health would not occur.
7 the Bhava
18. Snce the marriage bhava 7th has 6th and 11th lord Venus aspect, the 7th lord Mercury
is in 12th with Saturn and 8th lord Moon and the 7th bhava has got malefic planets on
either side (Papa Graha Argala), there will no be happiness in marriage.
8th Bhava
19. Since Ketu is in 8th,the 8th lord Moon in 12th with 8th karaka Saturn and with 9th
lord Sun, and lagna has Jupiter aspect, middle span of life (around 72 years) can be
expected. Due to the position of planets in rasi chart life span of 71 years and due to
planets position in navamsa life span of 88 years, can be expected., that is there can be a
Gandam(chance of life danger) earlier and if survived can continue further life span.
Swamiji’s Niryana(death) occurred on 21 September at 73 years.
9th Bhava
20. Since Jupiter is in 9th with Mars aspect,9th lord sun is in 12th with 8th lord Moon
with Saturn and with 10th lord Mercury, though there may not be natural prosperity, there
will be progress with self-effort. 21.Since there is retrograde Mars is in 7th to Sun,
significator of father, and from Sun the 7th lord is Venus also being 12th lord in 2nd
house in Dual sign, the father will have more than one marriage. Since next to Sun due to
Mercury, the father will be knowledgeable, due Venus wealthy, due to Moon travelling,
due to Rahu difficulties, due to aspect of mars energetic, and due to Jupiter in 9th from
Sun educated and wise.
10th Bhava
22. Since 10th lord Mercury is in 12th bhava with 8th lord Moon, with 9th lord Sun, with
Karma karaka Saturn, though the effect on worldly material profession will be less
concerned, he will perform his karma(duties) with high attainment in accomplishing
spiritual progress and blossoming.
11th Bhava
23. Since 11th lord Venus is in lagna with lagna lord Jupiter aspect, Saturn is in 11th
bhava, there will be gains and income with difficulties .delays and effort.
12th Bhava
24. Since in 12th bhava, there are 9th lord Atmakaraka Sun, Manas(mind)karaka Moon,
Buddhi(intellect) karaka Mercury with Shakti(energy)karaka Mars aspect, there will be
more exertion with effort towards Moksha (enlightenment
liberation),Vairagya(asceticism) and Aadhyatma(spiritualily). There will be travels in
foreign countries also.
Vimsottari Dasas
Mercury Dasa
26. Let us see the planets dasas (periods as per Vimsottari dasa system. At birth, the
balance of Mercury dasa is 4 years 5 months 18 days. Since Mercury is the 7th lord from
4th bhava with Neecha 9debilitated) Moon and 8th and11th lord from Moon and since
Ketu mahadasa(main period) almost started, the native’s mother expired in his 4th year.
Jupiter Dasa
29. At last on 21 September 1969 in the beginning of Jupiter Maha dasa in 73 years age,
he united with Brahmam Though Jupiter is lagna lord because of Ubhaya Kendradhipathi
Dosha ( evil due to two dual houses lordship) and connection with 6th and 11th lord
Venus and 5th and12 the lord Mars and due to transit of Ketu over Jupiter, Swamiji’s life
ended.
Conclusion
30. Many other aspects of the horoscope can be detailed in Sukshma paddathi (subtler
way) by going through Dasa , Bhuktis and Antardasas, Shodasa Vargas, Ashtakavarga,
Shadbalas, Bhava Balas etc. Under the present discussion, even in Sthula (gross) analysis
itself, most details of the life events of Sri Swamiji are confirmed. Due to the problem of
space, more details could not be discussed and interested readers can do further analysis
from their own experience.
