Throughout its long history, Earth has warmed and cooled time and again.

Climate has changed when the planet received more or less sunlight due to

subtle shifts in its orbit, as the atmosphere or surface changed, or when the

Sun’s energy varied. But in the past century, another force has started to

influence Earth’s climate: HUMANITY.

So, why does the average temperature of the atmosphere rise? What might

have cause the unprecedented increase in it’s level? To further understand, first ,

what is global warming, greenhouse effect and carbon dioxide?

Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth’s average surface

temperature due to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon

dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants, defined by NASA. Greenhouse

effect on the other hand is a process that occurs when gases in Earth's

atmosphere trap the Sun's heat. This process makes Earth much warmer than it

would be without an atmosphere. Gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon

dioxide, trap heat just like the glass roof of a greenhouse. These heat-trapping

gases are called greenhouse gases. During the day, the Sun shines through the

atmosphere. Earth's surface warms up in the sunlight. At night, Earth's surface

cools, releasing heat back into the air. But some of the heat is trapped by the

greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That's what keeps our Earth a warm and

cozy 58 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius), on average. Carbon dioxide is

a chemical compound composed of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. It is

often referred to by its formula CO2. It is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a

low concentration and acts as a greenhouse gas.

Greenhouse effect is useful to humanity. It keeps the Earth warm but the

effect seems to be abnormal these past years and even got worse. Human

activities like burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, and coal, dumping

wastes to the bodies of water or not segregating the wastes properly, using

products that have aerosols , cutting trees and pollution cause by humans, these

all contributes to the rapid increase of Earth’s temperature.

Burning fossil fuels increases the rate of carbon dioxide. Too much carbon

dioxide released, it traps the infrared in the Earth which makes us feel hot. The

improper segregation of wastes by humans also causes the global warming in a

sense that it destroys the natural habitat of species for example, dumping the

garbage to the bodies of water destroys tiny phytoplanktons. Phytoplanktons

take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen in exchange. Trees and plants also

give off oxygen and takes in carbon dioxide but humans still burn and cut trees

illegally for their benefit. Next, the use of products with aerosols such hairsprays

and air conditioners. Aerosols deplete the Earth’s ozone layer that protects us

from the direct heat of the sunlight. Continuous depletion of ozone layer will

have a major negative effect to us, humans. Negative effects such as erythema,

sunburn, photodamage (photoaging), photocarcinogenesis, damage to the eyes,

alteration of the immune system of the skin, and chemical hypersensitivity. The
direct heat with the absence of the ozone layer will also make the Earth even

more hot, thus results to global warming. Furthermore, pollution specifically air

from cars, factories and burning of waste, releases a great amount of carbon

dioxide which damages our health as well as the Earth’s.

Global warming today is very alarming. It affects the agriculture, water

supply, health, forests, ecosystems and living things etc. With the rapid increase

of heat, plant crops may not yield anything, water supply will be limited and

countries that have low supplies will be greatly affected, wildfires might occur in

forests, humans and their health will be at stake. Polar ice caps and glaciers are

melting, species living in the area are becoming endangered and worse going to

extinction and this melting results to the rise of the sea level. That extra water

could raise sea levels significantly, and quickly. In addition to sea levels rising,

weather can become more extreme. This means more intense major storms,

more rain followed by longer and drier droughts, a challenge for growing crops

changes in the ranges in which plants and animals can live, and loss of water

supplies.

Humans have increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by

more than a third since the Industrial Revolution. Changes that have historically

taken thousands of years are now happening over the course of decades. The

rapid rise in greenhouse gases is a problem because it’s changing the climate
faster than some living things can adapt to. Also, a new and more

unpredictable climate poses unique challenges to all life.

We should start changing our ways and be more cautious to what we are

doing that destroys the place we live in, the Earth. We are always complaining

to what are happening around us yet how ironic it is that we are also the ones

whose causing the effects of what we are experiencing now. Let’s think green

and save our planet before it’s too late.
