WHO - Tackling Shortage of Medical Supplies

The document discusses the shortage of medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. It identifies four main causes: 1) lack of proper supply chain management which causes bottlenecks and overstocking, 2) decentralized healthcare systems which limits sharing of inventory, 3) expensive resources like PPE, and 4) lack of information sharing. Solutions proposed include flattening the infection curve, improving supply chain management, centralizing healthcare systems, providing raw materials for volunteers, increasing information sharing and decision making, training experts to support ventilator production, and ensuring proper statistics. A four step process is also outlined to provide treatment while limiting human interactions.

WHO –Tackling shortage of medical supplies

Causes of shortage of medical supplies

1. Lack of Proper supply chain

- Lack of management

- Too much bottle necks

- Limited capacity in one area reduces capacity of the whole chain

- This causes supply overstock

2. Decentralized Healthcare system

- Lack of sharing of inventory and resources between departments(1 barrier)

- Lack of sharing of inventory and resources between hospitals(2 barrier)

- This requires proper management and a single head body(ideally the GOVT or UN)

3. Expensive resources such as P.P.E

- In order to solve this raw materials are to be provided to populations, so that volunteers may
use those to create proper final products

4. Lack of information sharing as a whole

- Ensuring proper Ventilator supply by training experts from militaries of a specific country to support in
production

-training ventilator operators in both military and volunteers

SOLUTIONS-
1. Flattening the Curve/ decrease Demand/ Decrease the amount of people getting affected on a daily
basis

2. Ensuring proper supply chains

-Eliminating bottlenecks

-Proper management

3. Centralization of Health Care Systems

- sharing of inventory and resources between departments

- sharing of inventory and resources between hospitals

-proper management and a single head body(ideally the GOVT or UN)

4. Providing raw material to populations, so that volunteers may use those to create proper final
products

5. Much more focus on information and quick decision making

6. Ensuring proper Ventilator supply by training experts from militaries of a specific country to support
in production

-training ventilator operators in both military and volunteers

7. Ensuring Proper Statistics

COVID-19 supplies to refugees:-

1. Un shall collect it from the highsest ranking countries in COVID-19 response according to WHO
2. UN provide the fund to government having high refugee influx
3. Un shall supervise and
4. The fund shall be provided to the refugees

4 step process should be applied to ensure proper treatment along with

limited human interactions:-
1. Patients and doctors should be kept in contact through a online platform or telemedicare, and
doctors will try to first diagnose the patients in this method
2. If patient is properly diagnosed and their illness is identifies, the may be supplied with
medicine’s through delivery systems.
3. However, if doctor believes that physical diagnosis is required or if patients required treatment,
then patient should be brought to the hospital, maintaining limited interactions
4. Doctor shall then diagnose and provide patients medicine or any treatment through centralized
healthcare systems.
