Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process used by plants to (1) food. All around, plants have leaves which come

have (4) green parts which contain chlorophyll, the substance that enables the process of photosynthesis.
Chlorophyll in the leaves is used (5) plants to make food for the whole plant. During photosynthesis
chlorophyll is combined (6) sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. Water is absorbed by the plant’s roots and
brought up to the leaves. Carbon dioxide is present in the air and leaves absorb (7) through small pores. As
a byproduct of this whole process, plants produce oxygen which other beings (8) to live and grow.

When I was a child I used to dream of becoming a teacher. I remember playing with my little friends at the
backyard of my house where I was the teacher of make believe classes. I also recall that I held a ruler in my
hand while talking to them, and pointing at the information written on the board. I can’t remember exactly
what kind of topics I used to teach except teaching how to read. I think I began teaching since I was 6, very
early in my life.
I also bring to mind that my mother enrolled me in a kindergarten, at a time when this type of pre-school
wasn’t very common. I started school when I was 4 years old, exactly 46 years ago. Going to school at that
age allowed me to learn how to read very well. I remember I loved the books I had to read. The pictures,
the letters, the joy of being able to form different words, and even sentences, meant a lot for me at that
age. When I began school I was the only one in my class who already knew how to read, but my short height
caused me a little problem. I wasn’t allowed to pass into a higher grade. However, at that age I was usually
chosen to read and act out at important school plays. I had to memorize long dialogues, as well as poems
to recite before the school principals in special events. Besides, at that time, in mathematics, I was slightly
advanced for the class. Of course, just in my additions and subtractions, the rest I had to learn.
Years passed by, and I enjoyed my school years very much. I was thrilled with regular classes as well as
sports and extra curricular classes, which included plays, painting and handicraft activities. I loved reading
books and presenting their summaries and analysis to the class. Every class was an opportunity to learn
something new and apply it within different contexts. So when I was about to finish school, it was difficult
to leave. Even though I considered several options to study at the university, I finally decided to study a
program related with teaching. So, I’ve been teaching all my life and I’m still enjoying it very much.

Photography
Taking good photographs is challenging. There are so many factors to take into account in one snapshot.
There can be movement, objects at different distances or a challenging lighting condition. But a good shot
is possible; it just takes the right equipment, knowledge and practice.
The first step is to understand the basics. You should learn about things like focusing properly, controlling
the diaphragm to regulate the amount of light that goes into the camera, controlling exposure time to
capture movement, and selecting the right type of film. All these are the tools of a photographer. Mastering
these topics and having the right equipment are the foundations.
The next step is to think about each picture. What is the essence of a scene? Is there a message? Just one
image should be enough. This is the part where observation skill, talent and practice also come into play.
With knowledge and perseverance everyone can take a good photograph.
