LCV Segment Analysis
• Pre-Lockdown, Light commercial vehicles
segment was set to benefit greatly from middle
class growth.
Light • Globally, LCVs account for 75% of commercial
vehicles sales while in India it is only 62%
Commercial • There are three big challenges the industry
Vehicle needs to overcome to realize this sales potential.
These are
• lack of availability of finance due to liquidity
crunch at nonbanking finance companies,
• the upcoming BS-VI emission norms and
• lack of drivers.
• In the near-term, replacement-led demand (following
almost three years of declining sales) and expectation
Light of stronger demand from consumption-driven sectors
and E-commerce and Express Cargo focused logistic
Commercial companies would remain key growth drivers for the
segment.
Vehicle • Over the medium-term, the segment would also
benefit from roll-out of GST and its impact on
logistics sector and preference for hub-and-spoke
model.
• Accordingly, ICRA expects the LCV (Truck) segment to
register a growth 9-11% in FY 2019 after reporting
strong recovery during the current fiscal.

• Ashok Leyland Ltd, a part of the Hinduja Group, is one of the leading
manufacturers of commercial vehicles in India.
• Ashok Leyland Ltd entered into a joint venture with Nissan Motor Co.
Ltd in FY2008 to manufacture light commercial vehicles (LCV).
• In FY2017, Ashok Leyland Ltd acquired the stake of Nissan at ₹1 and
renamed the LCV entity from Ashok Leyland Nissan Vehicles Limited to a
new name Ashok Leyland Vehicles Limited.
• In FY2018, the LCV business reported a profit of 134 cr for the first time,
almost 10 years after its conception in FY2008.
• After holding a significant position in the heavy
and medium commercial vehicle segments,
Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland pegs to
ramp up its presence in the light and
intermediate commercial vehicle segments with
Ashok the launch of two new models.
Leyland bets • Following the successful launch of light
commercial vehicle 'Dost,' the Chennai-based
big in LCV, auto-major unveiled 'GURU' and the first air-
ICV segments conditioned LCV goods vehicle 'PARTNER’.
• With these launches, Ashok Leyland feels itself
closer to the vision of emerging as one of the
top 10 truck makers globally.
