PROJECT: - BONDE IRRIGATION SCHEME

DUTIES:-
- The project was situated in the dry region of Birchenough Bridge in Manic land
Province, in Zimbabwe. The aim of the project was to provide small –holder irrigation
Plots (0.5ha) to at least 600 members of the local community for irrigation.
The project involved the construction of two (2) Pump houses each equipped with 5
Centrifugal Pumps driven by 40HP 2 Pole Electric Motors, complete with a flooded
Suction and all the necessary delivery fittings, Electrical Switchgear, laying of 400mm
dia (AC) Asbestos Cement Pumping Main and all the necessary flow control systems
(gate valves, air valves, bulk water meters, scour valves etc), and the installation
of various sizes and classes of PVC pipes as well as galvanized and brass for a total
Length of approximately 15km.The project was undertaken by various skilled and
semi – skilled personnel including the following: Engineers, Surveyor, Site Clerk,
Foreman, Plumbers, Electricians and General Hands. The project was completed
successfully and within budget, hence resulting in my promotion to the position
of Senior Engineer the following year.

Semester breaks during the period of my 4 years study at the university.
I was involved in various projects including the following:-

PROJECT: Dualisation of the road linking the City centre and Rimuka High Density
Suburb. The project involved the addition of a tarred lane to the existing
Road network for about 5km to ease congestion during peak periods. I was
Reporting to the Resident Engineer.
PROJECT: Construction of a Reinforced Concrete Reservoir at Ingesi High Density
Suburb:- the project involved the construction of a reinforced concrete
Reservoir to argument water supply to the above named suburb which always

faced critical water shortages during peak hours of the day due to it’s proximity
from the main water supply system. This project was sub – contracted to a
private Civil Engineering Contractor, hence council was only playing a
Supervisory role. Duties included, verifying accuracy of payment certificates,
and handling of any contractual issues which arised during the course
of the project.

PROJECT: Centrifugal Pump Installation:-

Council had to find a solution to the perennial water crisis at the time and
Booster Pumps had to be installed at the water supply dam’s Shore
Pump Station. Implementation of this project followed after a rigorous and
Investigative pump/pipeline hydraulic characteristic analysis. The project
Was a success in solving the City’s water problems. The majority of the
Works was carried out in – house. I was assisting the Deputy Director of
Works who was the Project Engineer in this case with site supervision,
Quality control, materials ordering, e.t.c
