REFLECTION This reflection focuses on a discussion with my mentor teacher


surrounding reporting on student achievement to both students are
parents/carers. In a staff meeting this week, the principal suggested that
instead of conducting parent interview weeks, the classroom teachers can
set up their classes as a gallery of student success and work they have
completed for parents to attend for one night. This was due to not many
parents organising an interview time with teachers at the school. However,
there will still be the option for one on one interviews if parents wish.

This topic at the staff meeting made me reflect on my own knowledge and
understanding of how to collect student data, or how to conduct a
parent/carer interview. I asked my teacher how she collects and stores
student academic achievements if a parent wishes to know this
information. I have learnt that you are able to store and save gradings
through One School for each individual student, which my teacher uses.
Additionally, any written planner that you use to record student grades
must be saved and not thrown away for seven years. This new information
has given me insight to knowledge I never knew about keeping accurate
and reliable records of student achievement and the legislative
requirements of archiving. She also says she communicates with parents
through email and phone conversation, however she said to ensure you
keep a record (digitally or written) of the correspondence.

During this conversation, my mentor teacher gave me effective strategies


to conduct parent/carer interviews on student achievement:

1. Using the school system of the ‘5 Questions for Teachers’


• What am I teaching?
• Why am I teaching it?
• How will I teach it?
• How will I know when all students have learned it?
• What’s next?
2. Be prepared and have student results or work organised prior to
interviews.
3. Ask the parent if there is anything they would like to discuss or if they
have any concerns.
4. Not only discuss academic achievement, but also social aspects that
they child is displaying in class (participation, kindness etc).
5. Use positive language.

These strategies I will implement in my future teaching practice when


discussing with parents and carers in interviews. I will also observe my
teacher inputting student results from the Term 3 into One School, to
understand the steps and the process. This discussion has made me think
of how I need to keep accurate data of student achievements.
