    It was a frigid day. Carol and her two cousins, Lisa and Molly, were in Aunt Penny's
    living room. The fireplace was the best place to be at that time. They stared at the old brooch
    lying on a footstool. With their shawls tightly wrapped around their shoulders, they were
    waiting for the insurance manager’s arrival.
    Aunt Penny had died two weeks ago. On the afternoon after the funeral, her three 5
    nieces had cleaned out the old woman’s house. It was Lisa who had found the brooch in a
    dusty jewellery box in the attic. Her sister, Molly, thought it must be a piece of cheap costume
    jewellery, but the other two noticed the diamond’s deep gleam. Together, they took it to a
    reputable jeweller who confirmed their suspicions. It was real, all right. Aunt Penny’s jewellery
    was worth a lot, about $100,000. The three cousins were elated at the news. 10
    The next day, their discovery made it to the local paper, complete with a colour photo
    of the brooch. All the publicity made Carol nervous. The police suggested that they get the
    brooch insured in case it was stolen. So on the coldest day of the year, they were waiting for
    the insurance manager to arrive. He was going to determine and confirm the value of the
    brooch. 15
    Jonah, Carol's son, walked in from the kitchen just in time to see Lisa picking up the
    brooch and cupping it in her hands. “You know, I’m the one who found this," she said. “It's
    rightfully mine.” “Stop saying that,” Molly said. “Aunt Penny left her possessions to the three
    of us. We’ll sell it and divide the proceeds." An argument took place and both were trying to
    grab the brooch from each other. It looked to Jonah like a fight might break out and that was 20
    when the doorbell rang. Carol sprinted to the door.
    A half-frozen man stood on the porch. “I'm Mr Crosby," he announced, showing them
    his card. “Apex Insurables. May I come in?" The three women ushered him inside and took
    his coat. Carol offered him a chair, and Lisa ran off to the kitchen to pour him a cup of water.
    “The brooch is on the footstool, Mr Crosby," Molly said. 25
    Mr Crosby picked it up. He adjusted the floor lamp, took a lens from his pocket, and
    began to inspect the gleaming diamond. He turned it over, then put it back on the table. “This
    is a fake. Similar ones can be found on the market," he commented. Lisa had just come in
    from the kitchen and almost spilled the water. She gasped, "That can’t be." “I'm afraid so,"
    said Mr Crosby. “But a jeweller told us it was real," Molly protested. All three stared at each 30
    other, crestfallen. “At least we won't be fighting over it," Carol said with a forced little laugh.
    Mr Crosby explained the ins and outs of costume jewellery but no one paid attention. While
    he was still talking, Mr Crosby inconspicuously slipped his hand into the side pocket of his
    pants.
    When he was done explaining, Mr Crosby walked to the door and started putting on 35
    his coat. Jonah picked up the worthless brooch from the table and examined it. He was very
    surprised that it felt extremely cold, like it had been outside. He looked at it intently. The usual
    gleam in the diamond was gone. He touched the brooch and looked at it again. Everything
    clicked and it dawned on Jonah who the culprit was. “Mom, the brooch has switched,"
    Jonah whispered. Carol’s eyes widened, stunned by the realisation He continued with his 40
    explanation. Carol nodded at every word he said.
    “Everyone, I know who’s the culprit!" Carol shouted. Everyone stopped in their tracks.
    “Everyone stay indoors. You too, Mr Crosby. Jonah, lock the door and l need you to get the
    telephone...NOW! "
