INTRODUCTION
This document shall be used as an addendum to “FSC-STD-40-004 Version 2: FSC
Standard for Chain of Custody Certification” for the purpose of classifying FSC product
groups and/or the included products by their wood species.
The FSC species terminology is a compilation of the scientific and common names of tree
species commonly used in the international trade, sorted according to their overall category
(‘conifers’ vs. ‘deciduous’), genus/species and existing varieties.
The hardwood species terminology follows the database compiled by RICHTER, H.G., and
DALLWITZ, M.J. (2000 onwards): “Commercial timbers: descriptions, illustrations,
identification, and information retrieval. In English, French, German, Portuguese, and
Spanish. Version: 16th April 2006” which is available online at http://delta-intkey.com.
The softwood species (conifers) terminology is currently based on an innovative digital tool
for macroscopic wood identification and information retrieval “macroHOLZdata –
computergestützte Bestimmung und Beschreibung von Nutzhölzern” developed by RICHTER,
H.G. and OELKER, M. from the University of Hamburg in cooperation with the “Institut für
Holzbiologie und Holzschutz” of the Bundesforschungsanstalt für Forst- und Holzwirtschaft
(BFH).
The addendum will be updated at regularly intervals in order to reflect new scientific findings,
additional translations and the increasing range of timber species available as FSC-certified.
