R.B.V.R.R Women'S College (Autonomous) Department of Mathematics M.Sc. Semester III Paper-III Syllabus 2017-18

This document outlines the syllabus for the course Functional Analysis taught in the third semester of the M.Sc. program at R.B.V.R.R Women's College. The course aims to expose students to metric spaces, inner product spaces, Hilbert spaces, linear operators, and applications to normed and Banach spaces. It has 4 units that cover topics like normed spaces, Banach spaces, inner product spaces, Hilbert spaces, orthogonal complements, orthonormal sets and sequences, representation of functionals, adjoint operators, and theorems like Hahn-Banach, uniform boundedness, open mapping, and closed graph. Upon completing the course, students will understand functional analysis fundamentals and be able to pursue

Functional Analysis
Learning Objectives: To expose the students to the theory of metric spaces and related concepts ,the
theory of inner product spaces , linear operators ,applications of the basic properties of Hilbert spaces
for normed and Banach spaces.

Learning Outcomes : After completing this course, students will understand the fundamentals of
functional analysis and the concepts associated with the dual of a linear space. They will also have an
understanding of how these are used in mathematical applications in pure mathematics such as
representation theory. They will have the ability to pursue further studies in this and related areas.

UNIT-I
Normed Space, Banach Space, further properties of normed spaces, Finite dimensional normed
spaces and subspaces, compactness and finite dimension linear operators, Bounded and
continuous linear operators, linear functionals, linear operators and functionals on finite
dimensional spaces, normed spaces of operators, Dual spaces.
(See Sections 2.2 to 2.10)

UNIT-II

Inner product space and Hilbert space - Definition of an inner space, Hilbert space, Continuity of
inner product, Completion, Orthogonal complements and Direct sums, orthonormal sets and
sequences, series related to orthonormal sequences and sets. (Sections 3.1 – 1 ,3.2- 2 ,3.2- 3, 3.3 ,
3.5 )

UNIT-III

Total Orthonormal sets and sequences, Representation of functionals on Hilbert Spaces, Hilbert-
adjoint operator, self-adjoint, unitary and normal operators.
(See Sections 3.1-3.5)
UNIT-IV

Hahn-Banach theorems for Complex vector spaces and normed spaces, adjoint operator, uniform
boundedness theorem.Open mapping theorem, closed graph theorem.

(See Sections 4.3, 4.5, 4.7, 4.12 and 4.13
