Solution

1. Find the surface area of a sphere, which circumscribes a cylinder of revolution, whose
altitude and diameter are each 10 cm.
Surface Area
= 4πr2
= 4π (5)2
= 4π (25)
= 100π
≈ 314 cm2

2. A rectangular solid whose edges are 3 cm, 4 cm, and 7 cm, is inscribed in a sphere. Find
its volume.
Find r
(3/2)2 + (4/2)2 + (7/2)2 = r2
r2 = 9/4 + 4 + 49/4 = 37/2
r = √(74/2)
≈ 4.3
Volume: 4/3πr3
= 4/3π (4.3) 3
= 106π
V≈ 332.84 cm3 or 333 cm3

3. A right circular cone has a lateral area of 1280π ft2 and a base area of 512π ft2. Find its
volume.
Find Volume
V = Volume of cone
LA = Lateral Area
r = radius
h = height
b = base

V = (1/3) (b*h)
LA = (πr) (√h2 + r2)
Area base = (π2)

r= √ (512π/π)
r≈ 22.627 ft
1280π= (22.627π) (√h2) + (22.627 ft)2
h≈ 51.846ft

V= (1/3) (512π ft2) (51.846ft)

V≈ 27797.978 ft3

4. The base diameter of a right circular cone is 18 cm. If the lateral area is 516.4 cm2, find
its volume in cubic centimeters.
Find Volume
Lateral area: 516.4= πrs r= 9
s= 516.4/9π ≈ 18.16
h= √18.162 - 92
h≈ 15.89

V= 1/3r2πh
V= (1/3) (9)2 π (15.89)
V≈ 1347.8 cm3

5. The outer and inner surface areas of a hemispherical shell are 402.12 cm2 and 157.08
cm2 respectively. Find its volume.

6. A sphere has a volume of 288 π cubic meters, determine its surface area.
Find Surface Area

V=4/3πr3
Given volume: 288π cm3
288π= 4/3πr3
Isolate r
288π= 4/3πr3π
288= 4/3r3
(3/4)(288)= (3/4)4/3r3
216= r3
3√216= r
r≈ 6
Surface area= 4πr2
= 4π r²
=4π (6)2
≈ 452.16 cm²
