INTRODUCTION

Management is an aspect of the business that doesn’t have the same

specific duties some of the other parts of the business have. While an
accountant will always know quite clearly the expertise and responsibilities he
or she has, a manager needs to have a much broader set of skills, with the
tasks ranging depending on the business. Yet, management like all the other
parts of the business have certain functions to guide the operations.

In this topic, we’ll talk about these functions, first by looking at the
definition of management. You’ll also be able to read about the five functions
core functions – planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling – and
why they are important and how you can achieve them with your
management.

Definitions and Functions of Management

A. Basic Concepts of Management

 “Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in
formally organized groups.” Harold Koontz
 “Management is the art of directing and inspiring people.” - J.D. Mooney
and A.C. Railey
 Management is the process of reaching organizational goals by working
with and through people and other organizational resources.
 Management control the functions of management to achieve
organizational goals.

B. Functions of Management
Management analysis is done by making breaking it down into five
managerial duties; thus, making managerial knowledge more understandable.
Management functions include the following:

Planning. It is a process of deciding the business objectives and charting out

the plan/ method for achieving the same. This includes determination of what
is to be done, how, and where it is to be done, who will do it and how results
are to be evaluated

Organizing. Organizing refers to the structured which results from identifying

and grouping the work, defining and delegating responsibility and authority
and establishing relationships.

Staffing. Indicates filling in the different job positions in the organization’s

structure; the factors that influence this function include: size of the
organization, types of jobs, number of individuals to be recruited.

Leading. A basic management function that includes building an effective

work climate and creating opportunity for motivation, supervising, scheduling
and disciplining.

Controlling. Involves evaluating, and if necessary, correcting the

performance of the individuals or work groups or teams to ensure that they are
all working toward the previously set goals and plans of the organization.
